Greed
I've reached the conclusion that the true cause of the Leafs status is not the incompetence of JFJ or Peddie. It is Greed.
Reading Dave Feshuk of Torstar today I realized that this "mother" is sinking at the same rate as it was on Monday. Tanenbaum, Peddie, et al have confirmed by their comments that their main interest is the revenue produced by the team. Cliff Fletcher's comments confirmed that he will toe the line (the goal is to make the playoffs, give me a break!).
Short of a revolt affecting that source of revenue, I can't think of any other thing we fans can do to straighten up this mess.

Feschuk
Should stick to basketball. He's cherry-picking comments as badly as Damien Cox does.
Tanenbaum and Peddie did say that winning is how you make money but Fletcher was also very clear on how team building has changed and how money can't bail you out for not developing your own youth.
I think we can be guardedly optimistic until the new President is hired and the trade deadline passes. Those two events will give a good indication of progress but Feschuk is basically discounting all that was said yesterday before anyone has been able to do anything.
Raptors
Doesn't he cover that team? Shouldn't he be comparing the two teams and how Fletcher could do what Colangelo did which is exactly what Fletcher has promised?
Not that MLSE isn't greedy as hell but I don't like this article.
Wall Street
Perfect but what we actually need is for them to be greedy as hell. The most profit possible can be found at the end of a Stanley Cup winning season. That is what they need to shoot for.
It's all about Risk:Reward
The revenue playoff rounds bring in is peanuts for this company.
A drop in the bucket.
Remember that this organization is worth something like $1.5 billion.
Playoff revenue will never be a driving force behind the ownership of this team because quite simply there are a number of ways they can make a better return on their investments outide of the Leafs making the playoffs.
The current ownership structure is killing this team.

Individual Game Revenue
The individual game revenue may be peanuts (1.5M-2M per game) but factor in the increase in ticket prices, advertising, television rights for the ensuing seasons and it becomes a much more enticing amount of money.
In most markets ... yes
In most markets this may be true because compensation is based o nperformance.
Ticket Prices: This has been rising anyways regardless of making the playoffs.
TV Rights: How many people have been forced to buy LeafsTV to be able to see a number of games increasing yearly.
Like I said, Toronto is not a normal hockey market. The team doesn't NEED to make the playoffs to increase revenue, so from a business perspective, the playoffs aren't necessary. Unfortunately with this ownership structure, the team is nothing more than a business.
