From The Branches - MATS MATS MATS!
There is only one story today: Mats is working out. TSM will tell you it's not a story but he is somehow friends with Neil Smith so I don't know if we can trust his judgment. It's obviously a story. The Leafs have 3 SO losses so far this season. You know who scores big goals for the Leafs? Mats Sundin. I don't want him to come back but with so much cap room where else will he be going? Maybe the Leafs will take on salary from the Flyers or Rangers so that they can sign Mats. Hmmmm...anyway, here are some real stories:
- JP has a good point about fighting. When did it become a hazard to your health to lay a good bodycheck?
- The General veers from interesting (Not Ian White's fault? Tell me more) to logical (bench Blake) to irrational and insane (Tlittle Tlate? Tpreposterous).
- Kim Jorn recounts his hajj to to Canada's Bethlehem.
- TFC not world class? Crazy. Seriously though, it is the best level available in North America plus Toronto has sooooo much else to do other than the Marlies. Now, if tickets were $10 it might be a different story.
- Lowetide wonders what the media will report when the inevitable downturn hits the Leafs...moreso.
- HF10 concedes defeat by playing the "grown-up" card. Someone doesn't get how the internet works. It's serious business.
Toss any others in the comments.

Funny thing with this whole Sundin situation is
The guy seems pretty torn up inside, he WANTS to play for Toronto, hell he doesn’t want to play for anyone else, I think that’s fairly clear. He’s received more then a handful of great or generous offers from a variety of teams (successful or not), and he still hasn’t signed with anyone. The issue is, he doesn’t want to waste another year being non-competitive, he wants to win the Cup because he’s going to retire soon and it doesn’t look like Toronto will even make an attempt at a run for a few more years to come. But the guy just can’t see himself wearing another jersey.
I feel for him, it looks like he’s in a no-win situation.
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
I don’t think Sundin’s Cup-desire is that strong. I suspect he’s okay with it. I think it has more to do with “the Sundin-brand” and his relationship to the fans (which is still worth zillions in retiremnet). He’s never been the most popular Captain for the Leafs, and the last 2 years he’s lost more fans then he’s gained. That hurts, especially when you’re coming to the end of your career.
The question for Sundin this summer was: move on or shut it down? He chose not to move on. The show is over. All that’s left is the curtain call. One last hurrah.
Winning Gold for Sweden goes a long way, I think. He is a champion.

I loved seeing this quote from Antropov (Kevin McGrann) this morning:
“It doesn’t matter who you are, you have to earn your ice time,” he said. “If you’re not playing 100 per cent and there’s a guy waiting to play and giving it his all, why not send a message?”
I added it to the bottom of my post. When he says, “there’s a guy waiting to play and giving it his all”, I don’t think he’s talking about the suspended Hollweg.

TRUE STORY
My wife and i were out at the movies one night, and there was a commercial playing before the previews for the National Guard. It was set up like a music video and it said Kid Rock featuring Dale Earnhardt. It would show these military guys doing stuff, Kid Rock and his band screeching their heads off to some horrible “nü mëtal” song, and then CGI of Dale zipping around a track racking a la Lightning McQueen from Disney’s “Cars.” My wife and i were laughing trying to figure out what Dale had to do with the rest of the story, and some NASCAR hag turns around and yells at my wife “HE’S SPONSORED BY THE NATIONAL GUARD!”
No point, just always found that gals response comical, and typical NASCARian.
The Marlies, me thinks it really is a matter of two thiings. The piss poor job MLSE has done in promoting the team, and the lack of stars, both hit on in the blog…

Should we maybe be thanking him for his douchebaggery? I mean, with his mad game-wrecking skillz, the team can play well, still lose, and get a high in the draft. Then everybody wins.
I’m a firm believer that douchebaggery should never be awarded…
A Toronto sports blog, where we unequivocally and unapologetically support the home team...
I don’t like to reward douchebaggery either, but if it helps us eventually get better (and of course, his douchebaggy ass is sent packing long before we’re back in actual contending position) then maybe just this once I can be okay with it.
Though I reserve the right to change my mind when he next screws up a game that should be a Leafs win (which will probably be the next game he is in the lineup.)
I don't know
I might spring for cheap tix so I can hurl insults and heavy objects at him. He could be a real draw that way. And the Marlies do want to increase their attendance, no?

So
coming back mid-season means he doesn’t care about a Cup?
There is no way, after all of last season’s bullshit, that he doesn’t get a NMC. Especially if this is his last season in the league. No way he signs anywhere without it.

I defense Sundin very calmly and, in fact, I spend many sleepless nights wondering what the hell is going on in that brain.
I’ve never quite understood why Sundin has never been accepted on a level that Clark and Gilmour were in this town, and that’s one of the reasons I defend him as strongly as I do.

Clark and Gilmour, we’re looking at through a 15 year lens. In 2023, we’ll be saying the same things about the then current crop of leafs against Sundin, Poni, Antropov, Kaberle and the like.
all that said, i get the deabate thing, what i don’t get is what you’re taking from my innocuous comments as being negative against Mats…

ummm, not what i said at all, hence the word “if” preceding the sentence. I was just curious as to why he would come back to Toronto at this point. Seriously, if he wants to win a cup, his best shot is anywhere but Toronto. I’m not saying he’s a horrible person who kicks kittens and eats babies (looking at you Hollweg…) i just don’t understand what he could be thinking about coming back to Toronto if he does, and to me, the only thing he might get is more recognition as a Leaf. Or, he might get torn to shreds, who knows?
On the other hand, if he does come back, and signs with the Leafs and gets his NTC, and then at the deadline, agrees to be moved for a sweet package…

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
If he signs with the Leafs
it’s because he feels he is a Leaf at heart, and can’t imagine putting another sweater over his shoulders.
I don’t think that’s the case, because no athlete should be that tied to a franchise. It’s a business, and if Sundin wasn’t producing, they would have dealt his ass or cut bait a long time ago. They tried to trade him last year, anyway.
The Leafs owe Sundin nothing. Sundin owes the Leafs nothing. There is no loyalty. I think this notion that Sundin should have “helped” us last year at the deadline is completely ridiculous.
A Toronto sports blog, where we unequivocally and unapologetically support the home team...
You’re right. Until he doesn’t sign with the Leafs he hasn’t done anything wrong ;)
The Leafs don’t owe Sundin anything because they’ve already given him over $70M. Sundin doesn’t owe the Leafs the right to trade him for assets but he does owe them the truth which apparently he wasn’t interested in providing.

neither you or I will ever know how genuine he was when he said what he did. He could have had a change of heart, or he could have been lying out of his teeth.

Mats
doesn’t owe the Leafs jack, and people who claim to know what he ‘really thought’ over the last six months are kidding themselves. I don’t know if even he knows what he has really been thinking this whole time.
Then why not just say that? Mats has never been forthcoming with any details in his career but last year he comes out with his desire to retire a Leaf. If he wasn’t sure then why say it at all? The media pestering him never bothered him before.
Also, you don’t think that at the very least he owes the Leafs the truth? Even if it’s “I have no friggin’ clue”?
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
How do we know
What he told the Leafs? I thought he did tell them he had no clue, but maybe I remember it wrong. If he just wanted to bolt the LEafs for a quickie contender he could have
a) signed somewhere on the cheap
b) signed somewhere by now
I think the chain of events are perfectly in lin with a guy feeling his way to a decision.
The only problem I have is that Mats himself said he’ didn’t want to be traded because he respected the idea of a team too much and that he wanted to be a part of that dynamic, from training camp until the season ends, however that may unfold (all paraphrasing there…)
Now it seems he’s decided he misses playing and wants back in (good on him) but apparantly to the detriment of his previously held beliefs.

And not Leafs related, but did anyone see Simmons latest rant? How does one go through life with that much hate bottled up inside? Forget the whole “Canada won a Gold medal under Gretzky’s leadership” logic, the fact that he hasn’t won anything with a borderline AHL roster in the NHL is what makes him a sham and a mockery, a shamockery…

Shamockerfool…
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Not to mention
That he holds Punch Imlach up as a great GM that never played but if you look at the end of his career he’s also a shitty GM that never played.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
i hate how logic gets in the way of everything, because if it were up to me, the leafs would have been the 42 year reigning Cup champs, as decided by me, because I think all the other teams weren’t Leafy enough.
Besides all that, he’s talking Olympic hockey, and using NHL stats to back up his logic. Sure, it’s the same sport, but the entire dynamic is different. Forget the fact that everything you read about Stevie Y is that he may be the next great GM, or that he’s had over a year of upper management experience, or the fact that he built the last jr. team. He sucks because he played hockey, and we all recognize his name.

I also love that he mentions nine medals have been handed out and Canada’s only won one. Well, the most Canada could have won was three unless someone can figure out how to win a gold, silver and bronze in Men’s hockey.

that's easy
much like giving toronto another team, we should have three olympic teams, we just love the sport that much…

On a tangent: am I the only one who would rather see amateurs at the Olympics than professionals?

I only watch Olympic hockey and I love that the pros go…all the other sports can stick with the amateurs, although I’m not sure what the pro-lugers and pro-skeleton folks would do every four years.

I really liked watching the Lindros and Kariya-led Olympic teams. If countries are sending real amateurs then fine. If not, I want Canada sending NHLers.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Except
The IOC will never have the balls to punish countries who send professionals
For example, they can’t go after China for using under-aged female gymnasts because the official method of age certification is whatever it saz on their birth certificate. Well that point is moot when the government who issues the damned certificates is in cahoots in the first place, and the IOC will never do anything to nail them even though everyone and their blind half dead grand mothers know they’re under-aged.

No. Let the amateurs have the Olympics and bring back the Canada Cup.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
Yeah
I like the Canada Cup (and damn right it’s Canada. You want it? You take it from our cold dead hands!)
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
No – that was the WORLD Cup.
The only problem with the Canada Cup was that it would put your eye out.

ah yeah I get all confused by that crap. The world cup one is freakish.
As for the canada cup.. err.. it’s not really a cup or cup like in any way, is it?

They named it the TD Banknorth Garden with the intention of people in Boston just calling it “The Garden” again.

Ah
Makes sense, but also un-necessary if you ask me still.
I mean speak to people in Toronto and 90% of them will still be calling the SkyDome, SkyDome and not the Rogers Centre.

A couple of years ago the SkyDome (Cost to taxpayers: $600M+) was sold to Ted Rogers (cost to Uncle Ted: $25M). He then changed the name. No one’s ever used it.
