What bothers me is that tv-commentators do announce Vesa Toskala with double s's
Like Vessa Toskala.

Vesa is knows Finnish name but vessa on the contrary means toilet in Finnish.

OK, I have sort of an answer.

Doesn’t sound like English is particularly good at the distinction, but the accent really has to go on the first syllable. Apparently, we do a much better job of that sound in “Esa”, as in Tikkanen, but I can’t say I hear the difference.

Less emphasis on the s – that’s all it takes.
