Mark Bell Waived
Glove tap to blurr1974 for the tip. This solves one of the roster issues for the Leafs and probably works towards cementing John Mitchell's spot on the big club. Good for him.

Shame.
I personally hoped for a big year from him.
Now we’ll get nothing for him, as usual these days.
Wait...
Unless they just want to send him to The Marlies for conditioning?
Good idea
This is your brain (points to Justin Pogge) and this is your brain on drugs (points to Mark Bell).
From back to back 40+ point seasons on the Blackhawks to out of the NHL in about three seasons…

So Bell
Is now the Leaf’s after-school-special poster-boy?

Afters chool Special
It would star Mark Bell and Kyle Wellwood, it would be a blatant rip off of Degrassi only with hockey instead of higschool!
It would be Called Bellwood!
It would teach kids the dangers of drinking, and bad eating habits!

Some of the best days I have ever had are the ones where I spent like 8 hours in bed watching Degrassi and eating sour gummy worms.
What guy doesn’t wanna date this?

JFJ as the Anti-Midas
Man, pretty much everything that guy touched just turned to lead…
A life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...http://bitterleaf.blogspot.com
A little surprising given that he had the A on his sweater a couple nights ago. It’s too bad it didn’t work out for Bell this year, I was actually cheering for him, but he should never have been here in the first place. Bringing him in last year was a HUGE mistake that really hurt dressing room chemistry.
I believe Wilson and Fletcher did the right thing this year by giving Bell every opportunity to make the team, but if he just doesn’t have what they need, then cut him loose or send him down.

It was a massive distratction. I think JFJ decided that he had to have Toskala and if Bell was the price then he was willing to deal with it for two seasons. At least he didn’t come with a NMC or didn’t get his contract re-negotiated.

OTOH, did ya notice we’re keeping Schenn to start the season?
I’m thinking it’s a 9 game audition while Kubina/Finger are injured, but I’m glad I can finally see him play!

That's My Thinking
Kubina is slated to be in opening night, but Finger will be a little longer…

Schenn
He bloody earned this chance. I don’t care what Damien Cock thinks, what would sending down the guy who was the best defenceman in camp say about the organization?
If you perform, you stay. It’s a simple philosophy.
Now is the tough part. Not only will Schenn face full NHL rosters starting Thursday, but some pretty damn good ones: Detroit, Montreal, Pittsburgh, Rangers, Ducks, Lightning to name a few… plus that one line team Ottawa (albeit a rather good one line).
It will be obvious where he should go by the time the Leafs skate off the ice with their heads hanging on October 28th.
Barring injuries or any disasters...
Schenn will at least get his 12 games, 3 more then he did in the pre-season and against full line-ups, so he will have another chance to show what he is made of. However I would not be surprised if he doesn’t stand out quite as much given the aforementioned fact that he will be facing teams with their real lines, not to mention that he will most likely be more targeted as well.

Targeting
They’ll definitely go after the kid and the full lineups will give us a good idea of what he can really do. Man, that’s a tough opening schedule. The Stanley Cup champs, the beaten finalists, the champs from two years ago, the favourite to come out of the East, another playoff team, and the Lightning. Ouch.

It just doesn't matter...
Even if Schenn is the best defenseman in the league, send him down. He isn’t going to take the Leafs to the playoffs by himself, so why use a year of his 6 before free agency on a lost season. Save that year to be spent hopefully on a better squad.
Up yours losers, I’ve got tickets for the Leafs visiting the Rangers.
I’ll see Schenn in person, hahahahahahaha

I almost
Bought tickets for the Habs – Leafs game on the 11th… but I mis-read the sale dates on ticketmaster.ca, and instead of holding out and waiting I went ahead and blew my ticket money on more expensive equipment for my DSLR camera…
Of course, my thought process during the whole thing was I needed better gear to take pictures at the game, only to realize with horror later on that I had no money left to buy the tickets to go to the game with.

I’ll be catching them in LA, and possibly, if I go all stalker, following them up the left coast from Anahem to San Jose. The Kings tickets are already bought in my hand, so that’s a guarantee. 8 rows up on the goal line. I love LA and their non hockey market fans.
Last time the Leafs came through, it was like a home game for them. The section I was in was full of Leaf fans. One guy said he’d seen Eddie B still in the hotel lobby drinking and that he’d missed the bus. In my mind, that wasn’t too far a stretch to be considered impossible…

Regarding Schenn
Since it’s been confirmed Schenn will get his 10 games in the NHL at least, I see two main things that Luke Schenn has yet to show:
1. The Physical play – His “Human Eraser” nickname was much about his bonecrushing hits and physicality as a junior player, as it was for his solid positional play. Maybe Schenn is afraid of being caught out of position, but the physical element of his game has been pretty dormant. I do see him coming out of his shell as he gets more comfortable, but the hesitation still lingers.
2. Offensive game – We got glimpses of his offensive potential (good heavy shot, shootout goal), but at this stage of his development, it’s still relatively untapped. One of the hopes of Schenn going back down to Kelowna was not only continue to develop his leadership skills, but to develop and hone those offensive talents. We all know what Schenn can do on the defensive side. But it’s his power play potential that needs to be harnassed to exceed those Adam Foote comparisons. With Kaberle, Kubina, Van Ryn, Colaiacovo, Stralman, and White all competing for power play time, while Schenn being asked primarily to be a stay at home D so far, I would much rather Schenn play in all situations down in the WHL if he isn’t getting prime minutes up in Toronto.
In my mind, Schenn more than deserves to get his 10 game trial, regardless of any injuries on the blueline for the Leafs. And who knows, maybe Schenn is saving himself for the start of the regular season to bring out the “pain (VIA)train”. But I just don’t see Schenn focusing and practicing on developing his offensive game in the NHL right now, especially when the Leafs have so many bodies vying for playing time at the backend.
We’ve seen glimpses of the hitting but I think that you’re right in saying it’s a positional concern for him.
Getting a chance to take the reins offensively is the best argument for sending him back to junior (aside from contract/RFA/UFA issues).

Waiving good bye to Mark Bell
I believe I predicted Bell’s demise yesterday on the Bubble Boy post. For those who think the Leafs blew it again, remember he was only on the Leafs as part of a salary dump. The Sharks insisted on Bell being part of the Toksala package. JFJ tried to save face by suggesting that he wanted Bell. Dumping that salary is just another step in correcting past mistakes.
It was ridiculous for JFJ to suggest Bell was anything other than salary that he had to take on. At best he was a long-shot reclamation project. Now it seems, Fletcher and Wilson have closed the book on him. Too bad, so sad.
