Kostopoulos continues his "turned at the last second" story and this is shorter than it would be in a perfect world but at least it sends part of a message...I guess.

Oh well

Still not exactly fair, what with any value Van Ryn would have had by the deadline being diminished by his absence. But then, maybe we’ll keep the guy around after all, I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Hope he gets back soon.

Hopefully he can get healed up quickly enough to be able to show what he had been showing up until now.

At this point

The only way Campbell and the other NHL execs will actually do the job they’re being paid to do is when someone gets killed on the ice when they get their head smashed into the glass.

3 games is disgustingly pathetic, that’s what? About a week, maybe even less? There’s no bloody consequence, it’s getting to the point that sending out your checker to accidentally take out an opposing player with a hit from behind is becoming a viable strategy. You don’t even need to intentionally hurt someone, just tell your guys to skate into another player when they’re going to the boards, lean into it a bit and if you can stick your elbows up at the last second, worst that’s going to happen? You get a few game suspension while the other guy leaves in a stretch or crawls back to his bench with a concession and some broken bones.

This is completely bullshit.

I’m so pissed right now I can feel the veins in my head pulsating.

For anyone who hasn’t already, I suggest checking out the comment thread over at Four Habs Fans involving PPP, eyebeleaf and a rather….interesting Habs fan personality.

Gold.

That guy is ridiculous. I haven’t gone back since he posted but he is either an idiot or trying to rile Leaf fans up and if it’s the latter then that’s fine, it’s a Habs site but wow.

That thread is a lesson in admitting fault in your own players. Like our game thread when Hollweg tried to help Schenn win the Calder it featured quick and forceful condemnation of that one commenter’s idiocy. It’s why I read Four Habs Fans for most of my Montreal and stripper-related needs.

i read the thread. it’s nice to know all teams attract psychopathic losers as fans…

On the french cbc tonight, the talking heads all agreed, their Habs are still the greatest team that God has chosen to form in any league-sport-universe, but Kostopoulous is a dick because he left his feet, raised his stick and his elbow before hitting VR. Oh, and Grabovski was a cancer in the Habs room

by blue with age on Nov 10, 2008 11:40 PM EST up reply actions

At least

They admitted to Kostopolous’ hit, I’m surprised they didn’t blame the whole thing on Van Ryn

Three games? The way the NHL’s being run, I was expecting two max.

Awesome

Did Colin Campbell strike again? Because this sounds like his M.O.

Thanks Colin, just keep passing down these hand-slap punishments for players committing dirty-ass acts because if your intention was to not get the message across you’ve certainly done a stand-up job, keep it up.

I think Mr. Campbell would make a fantastic judge in Canada’s judicial system, he’s already repeatedly demonstrated that he’s not only capable but perfectly willing to hand down meaningless sentences on guilty verdicts.

What an utterly useless man, can someone please get some kind of competency in the NHL front office?

Yes, 3 games is an insult...

….the post lockout rules allow stiffs like Kotsopoopolous run opposing d-man who can’t touch him and have to play the puck otherwise they themselves would get an obstruction cal

Hollweg said Kostopoulos’ hit on Van Ryn was much worse than his hit on Pietrangelo and suggested that, as a repeat offender, the Canadiens forward should get a 20-game suspension.

“If you look at (my hits), there were no injuries,” Hollweg said. "I’m not saying that’s the right thing — you never want those hits from behind — but you have to look at the injury that (Van Ryn) got.

Man Hollweg is a dick. I just don’t think he gets it. Those hits should be gone period, regardless of whether they cause injury or not. What a dipshit. (Quote from here)

by lordosis on Nov 11, 2008 9:19 AM EST reply actions

Yup

And someone pointed out on Mirtle’s blog that the inconsistency behind the NHL’s determining these suspensions is a real issue… 3 games for Kostopolous’ hit but only 2 games for one that nearly ended Bergeron’s career. There seems to be no set policy on how to deal with suspensions, so as long as a player is willing to gamble and play the odds, they’ll just keep hitting from behind.

Its a complete joke, never before has it been more obvious that Campbell and the NHL front office are no longer valid.

GAH!!

What a dummy. First off, Hollweg is lucky Pietrangelo wasn’t hurt. Second, you’re right. The NHL can’t look at the outcome of the hit and then react if there is an injury. It should be 15 games for a hit like that and injuries tack on games but at least have a very stiff base penalty so that even hits that result in no injury are penalized.

by PPP on Nov 11, 2008 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

Yup

They need to set a policy… for example something like if you get penalized for a hit-from-behind-boarding call, it’s an automatic 2 game suspension no questions asked, if the opposing player is injured, automatic 10-game suspension no questions asked, if intent to injure can be proven, 25 game suspension no questions asked etc. with additional suspensions being added depending on the severity of the incident, but this gives a base-line to start from and will put some consistency into these sentences.

Was it from that hit? I thought he hadn’t missed any games and then he broke his leg. Poor kid.

I thought that the kind of hit given by Koustopolopolomoppous should be a 5-10 game minimum, with him getting around 10 because of the repeat thing. And of course they are without pay.

But here’s an idea. How about suspend the players, and then fine them OVERTOP the same amount the forfeit in the suspension.

An example: Koustopolopolomoppous is making about $900k. So a 10 game suspension (which will actually be considered pay/day because of repeat status, so 20 days) would equal forfeiting $98 900. Double it. Make the fine the same. Now a player that was making $900k just lost $200k in fines.

THAT will hit home.

In the way he was suspended, he gets to sit for 3 games, and loses $35 000. Still a decent set of change, but probably won’t set him back very much.
