Brian Burke Announcement

Mirtle emailed me to let me know that the Ducks have an important announcement relating to Brian Burke today.

Hopefully he doesn't come to Toronto.

2pm Update: As per TSN, Bob Murray will be taking over as GM of the Ducks. What does this mean for the Leafs? No one is sure yet.

2:10pm Update: As per Wikipedia, this is now official.

Wikiburke_medium

2:15pm Update: Earl Sleek chimes in

I'll have a proper good-bye for the guy at some point, but for now, welcome to the new Ducks' GM, Bob Murray. Sleek = Stunned.

2:26pm Update: MF37 has the roundup on Brian Burke's bonafides while he and David Johnson wondered during the heady days before Bob Murray how the Toronto media would have treated their anointed rainmaker if he made some of the moves he made in Anaheim. And maybe not all of the guys that predicted it (if it actually happens) are dummies. Just kidding, Proteau still doesn't know what he's talking about.

2:44pm Update: From Dr. Mirtle:

He's coming to Toronto guys -- he wouldn't step down with nowhere to go

NO!!!!

3:02pm Update: So it looks like it's just a matter of when he'll join Toronto

Sources tell TSN Burke will remain in a senior advisory capacity with the Ducks for now but that the final word on any hockey operations decisions in Anaheim will be made by Murray. Sources say Burke will, in this advisory capacity, have the ability to freely negotiate future employment opportunities as a GM in the NHL.

That would pave the way for Burke to be hired as president and GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the days, weeks or months ahead, if the Leafs and Burke so desire. And there is strong reason to believe that is precisely what will happen.

In any case, it would seem all but certain that Burke will find his way to Toronto as the Leafs' top hockey man.

I guess we might as well welcome our new angry Irish overlord.

4:02pm Update: The Boss has some quotes up from the world's most boring press conference.

I'm rather sure

I had a dream the other night about Brian Burke signing a contract extension with the Ducks.

I’m kind of excited, I liked having him in Vancouver as he was such an entertaining media presence.

I dunno if he would be better than Uncle Cliffy, but he’s probably pining for his arizona hacienda these days anyway.

But then, nothing is done yet..

by Karina on Nov 12, 2008 2:23 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wow that would be a huge surprise! I just hope they don’t buy him out though. Yestarday on sportsnet they were saying how Blake was making a scene in the locker room (or that they could hear loud noises from the room)? This is getting interesting.

I really hope there’s no buyout though – that would cripple the cap we’ve got.

by WildWolfdog on Nov 12, 2008 3:33 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Aww

I was hoping the Burke thing would go away. Like maybe Anaheim winning another cup this year so he’d have to stay there. I live in Victoria and saw enough of Burke out here already. He’s not one to hold his tongue, which can be funny sometimes, but also costly. Who needs more reasons why other GMs won’t trade with the Leafs? It’ll be hard enough turfing Blake as it is…….

Rebuilding, not tanking

Burke

There was a time late last year when I thought Burke to the leafs was a great idea. I was thinking that at any minute I would be reading about his signing. Now I’m not so sure.

Uncle Cliffy is doing an awesome job and I don’t want to see him go yet. So far this year he and Wilson have created a great culture for the team, I don’t want Burke to come in and screw it all up.

If Blake is waived and we get his salary off the cap we’ll have close to 12 million in space. Burke would go wild.

What about those stories having him going to Boston? Or even if he comes to Toronto, can he have the same position he was offered in Boston – ie president of all hockey ops not just GM. If that would be the case for him in Toronto, we might see Burke here and Peddie goes buh-bye.

...

by puckbuddy on Nov 12, 2008 2:24 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I did hear from an unimpeachable source who heard from the man’s wife herself that Peddie is in fact counting down the days to ending his involvement with the hockey team. No word on whether it’s Burke but he wants to leave.

There’s nothing to Berger’s piece – he might as well have written “Wendel Clark Comeback Iminent” and then filed a story about how Wendel isn’t skating and quote all of the organizational spokespeople as they publicly and explicitly deny it.

by PPP on Nov 12, 2008 3:22 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

DGB nails it, with a personality like Burke, he would never stand for meddling by anyone like Peddie. Even if his GM tenure is lacklustre, he can set the precedent of cutting the ties that allow the MLSE goofballs to meddle in the hockey operations.

Plus, how long before he brings in Nonis as assistant GM, who we all know pulled off one of the greatest trades in NHL history?

by LeafFanInVan on Nov 12, 2008 3:27 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Pretty much.

Assuming Burke is true to his (alleged) word and wants nothing to do with the MLSE board, that means that his arrival in Toronto kills off Richard Peddie once and for all as far as Leaf fans are concerned. That has to be good news.

It’s not true of Fletcher. He still has to answer to Peddie. He didn’t get the Colangelo Plan. Burke will.

I dunno what to make of the the whole “Burke to Toronto” thing right now. Initially last year when the rumors first came out I was excited and that there was no way it could ever happen but still had hope that it would.

But since then there have been a few blogs (which PPP has linked) that have made me hesitant. I think the main problem is – no one thought Fletcher would do such a good job so far. We also have to keep in mind though that Cliffy probably won’t be GM for more than a year, maximum.

After that, do we really want to have suicidal thoughts because Peddie and co. hired JFJ version 2.0? I mean I’m guessing if Burke does come over, he will have autonomy like Colangelo with the Raptors? That’s a good thing? Plus he won a cup … that’s also a good thing? But his drafting and cap management seems to suck (maybe he’s learnt better over the years?) … besides, I’m guessing all the others Cliff has assembled around him (Newiendyk – however the hell you spell his name) and the other old guys whose name I don’t remember … it shouldn’t be that bad?

by WildWolfdog on Nov 12, 2008 3:31 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

HUGE

Difference between Colangelo and Leafs GM…

Leafs have an established market base, the Raptors, not so much. Raptors must succeed to draw fans and money, the Leafs don’t necessarily have to meet the same requirements.

What happened to Dec?

I wonder if Burke asked them to resolve this before then as not to make too much of a stink (with thanks to the Toronto Media – that wont be doable). I think they knew his intension and had to decide if having a lame duck GM or not (replacing him) is what would be best for the team.

So if he doesn’t come to Toronto, I can see him in Boston or Chicago as the pres of hockey operations.

a little too much being read in on our end...

the “lame duck” GM (a fitting metaphor if ever there was one) is what it is. The ducks have not gotten off to the start they wanted, and before they start shuffling deck chairs at the player level, the team probably thought it best to nail down the GM situation first. Just my two cents

Burke's T.O. Entrance

This is how I picture it should go:

Location: HNIC Hotstove. Present are Ron Maclean, Al Strachan and Mike Milbury. LeBrun is via Satellite.

Strachan: Well with the economic realities as they are I just don’t see how Atlanta can sign Kovalchuk..

Suddenly Dropkick Murphys are being blasted through the sound system. Burke enters through a previously unnoticed archway with smoke and flames shooting up from either side

Burke: Enough of your bull-BLEEP, Strachan! We’re taking you out!

Strachan: We? Turns to his left, notices Milbury is now wearing the spiked shoulder pads a la ultimate warrior

Milbury: We’re putting you on waivers, PERMANENTLY!

Burke and Milbury grab Strachan and double suplex him through the table. Because it isn’t a flimsy breakaway table, it takes several tries. Strachan blubbering like a little girl.

Burke (to camera): Toronto Media! Consider yourselves ON NOTICE! You’re next, COX! Milbury makes exaggerated motions of breaking a bundle of twigs.

Ron: (insert stupid pun here)

Aaaand.. Scene!

God help us

They say in french that the enemy of good is better. I like things the way they are. Cliff has his mojo back and neuwie is learning to take his place. The last thing we need is yet another executive fulfilling his passion for self aggrandisement on our watch (or dime if you pay). You know that we have seen enough of Leaf executives looking to make their mark, show that they piss farther, have the biggest dick or are the smartest person in any room they occupy. Let the coach do all the talking, take the glory or goat horns as the case may be. People worship the ground that Gainey walks on here in Quebec, but I rarely see him on the news. He does his thing, collects his ginormous paycheck and responds to questions when absolutely necessary. Does this sound like Brian Burke? Fuck Burke, his outsized alien head, his Harvard haircut, his extended family, his american hubris and his effort at penis enlargement at our team’s expense.

Fair point...

…in that case, I am a musician!

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 10:14 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exactly

I’m a baker, chef, literary critic, writer and wine taster.

At least, that’s what I’m telling people. What? I have done all those things, some of them even to high acclaim. So that counts, right?

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 10:21 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Absolutely!

And that’s an impressive resume…

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 10:23 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

When I see it in print like that, you’re right, it is impressive.

I should also add smartass to that list. I’m damn nearly professional at being that.

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 10:38 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Excellent

Will you provide a testimonial for me? I’m putting together a video resume, and I want to include people testifying to my many skillz. I think you’d add the right touch of je ne sais quoi.

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 10:44 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Happy to do so

Tell me how much time you want me to fill and I’ll make it work. Mr. One-take.

I'm thinking

2-4 minutes, or three really good anecdotes.

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 10:50 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh.

You want money? I was kinda hoping you’d do it out of the goodness of your heart. I am an impovrished student, after all.

Oh, I could totally let you win a round if you did it for free. Please?

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 10:53 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

For an impoverished student...

…I’ll waive my fees. And sign away all residuals and royalties.

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 10:55 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

awesome

I appreciate it, and the waiving of your residuals and royalties is a nice touch.

Just so we’re clear, I don’t have to lose a round to you now, do I?

(Note: I excluded the words ‘on purpose’ because it is obvious that would be the only way I’d ever lose, so it seemed moot.)

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 10:58 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No charity

You’ll be roundly beaten on the strength of my intellect, wit and cunning.

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 11:00 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Intellect, wit and cunning?

Oh, now I’m scared. No, wait, I’m the total opposite – fearless.

Bring it on, you timorous wretch!

I'll be a second!

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.

Mine, right?

C’mon, you like me more than C4C, don’t you?

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 11:13 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

PPP

is the ultimate officiant. He will assist in weapon selection and rules of engagement.

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 11:16 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I know

which is why I totally called dibs on him. You can find your own second.

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 11:20 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Fine.

I draft LD, because she will write the ultimate revisionist fanfic history regardless of outcome.

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 11:21 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No!!!!!

You can’t have LD. We think we might be twins split up at birth. Plus, she can’t go against a fellow fanfic-keteer. That means Jared is off-limits too.

Besides, what makes you think she’d write the outcome in your favour anyhow? I’m the one she wants to poke on stalkerbook…

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 11:24 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We'll see...

…and she won’t need to write fiction – she’ll merely be a witness to history as I draw and quarter you with my mindgrapes.

BTW

I love that PPP stuck his head down in the basement for a moment and then disappeared…

I’d like to see you try. I’ll take you down, and won’t even break a sweat doing it.

I'll be lounging...

…with a cocktail in one hand, and my other loosely grasping my wit rapier, slicing through you with the precision of a neurosurgeon.

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 11:31 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You talk better than you fool…or slice through with wit rapier, as the case may be.

And what kind of cocktail? I like cocktails, and could totally go for one too.

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 11:36 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Depends on the time of day.

Morning? Caesar
Early afternoon? G&T
Evening? Bourbon and bitters or martini
After dinner? B&B

Anytime? Margarita!!!

Also, anything with booze.

Agreed. I could really go for a G&T right now.

Wow

I could probably give you some tips on UNprofessional selling. But that likely doesn’t help your cause.

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 9:45 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't know

My prof always goes on about how we’re just learning, so maybe if I was able to talk about unprofessional selling, I’d get marks just for knowing what selling is.

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 9:47 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

tee hee. I think I’ll put that as the answer to at least one question.

I heart Mamet.

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 9:55 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Me too...

I also love Baldwin and he just chews up the screen and upstages half a dozen legends in a single scene.

“Third prize is you’re fired.”

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 9:57 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I never

understood what would be so bad about steak knives. I mean, a nice set of steak knives is a good thing to have. I was pleased as punch when I won a set at curling a few years ago.

And yes, Baldwin is delightful in that.

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 10:00 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Decent steak knives...

…cannot be underrated. They make a table, create a sense of anticipation for the meal to come, and of course, cut through delicious maillard-crusted beef like buttah.

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 10:02 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I love mine. One solid piece of stainless steel, so it looks classy and won’t get crud stuck in between the blade and handle.

The only prize I enjoyed more was the bucket of margaritas.

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 10:08 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nothing goes better with steak than a bucket of margaritas.

Nothing goes better with anything than a bucket of margaritas.

I’m thirsty. For a bucket of margaritas.

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 10:09 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, I’m thirsty for a bucket of margaritas too.

My friends and I have agreed that we all have to try to win the buckets when the playoffs role around. We try to have enough so we can have one bucket per party.

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 10:15 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That plan cannot fail.

Unless you don’t win enough buckets.

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 10:16 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We told our non-curling friends, and now they scour the city looking for buckets to add to the collection. This past summer, we had three buckets o’booze. I dimly recall the events of that evening, though there are pictures.

Hells no.

Those must be hidden from the light. The only way to see them is to actually attend one of the gatherings. We’re exclusive like that.

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 10:27 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Heh.

butchered that like Jason Blake in the slot.

Very nice. And very apt. Just be more subtle next time, you know, work up to it instead of blurting it out. You never know, you might convince me with a lighter touch.

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 10:30 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Thanks for the tip coach...

Just don’t make me a healthy scratch. I will lose my shit like you wouldn’t believe, despite the blame for my failure being entirely on my shoulders.

by clark4calder on Nov 12, 2008 10:31 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'll make you a healthy scratch

if I want to! You’re not playing hard enough, so sit down and pipe down, and when I feel like it, I’ll give you a shot and if you don’t do anything with that, I’ll sit your ass down again.

And if anyone in the media has a problem with this, I’ll explain it to them in an exasperated tone and roll my eyes.

by Mabel on Nov 12, 2008 10:35 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hate you coach!

I thought Maurice was bad last year, but you are just mean. Maybe it’s just not gonna work out for me here in Toronto.

Whatever

You’re playing like total suck, and that’s not accpetable. We’re working on building for three years from now, not today. I’m not worried about what you think.

You scored 40 ages ago. You haven’t done squat for me, except give me a delightful new drill in practice, the “let’s skate around for the length of a JB shift to see how stupid he is for not getting off the ice”.
I’m the coach, and I own you. You don’t like it? Quit.
