Game Thread: Maple Leafs at ACC West Part II

Toronto Maple Leafs at Edmonton Oilers, Nov 13, 2008 9:00 PM EST

The last time these two met in the regular season was when the Leafs were busy making their fans' lives miserable by honouring the 1967 Stanley Cup Champions. Millions raced to their calendars to make sure that it was not, in fact, 1968 all over again.

Internet stream is available here.

REMEMBER YOUR SPG PICKS.

Star-divide

I wonder how the kids on each team are staking up so far? Note that this is just a purely superficial look that is only meant to inflame Oilers fans that think that their young kids are 'going to get better' while the Leafs' are 'obvously going to get worse'.

Edmonton Oilers' Young Guns

Ales Hemsky 5 10 15 -1

Looks like Blke should be signing over some of that cheque each month. White has been great on forward. i’m buying what he’s selling

by Polecon on Nov 13, 2008 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

Is it me or does White look like the Sheriff from the HBO show Deadwood?

by Kriv on Nov 13, 2008 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

have to hear hm say “cocksucker” to be sure

by Polecon on Nov 13, 2008 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

I’m all for White manning the “rover” position. I don’t know why more teams don’t employ the tactic to offset the smaller players like they did in the 1920s and 1930s so liberally.

did Vishnovsky

shit himself… what’s with those pants?

by Polecon on Nov 13, 2008 11:06 PM EST reply actions

We were all thinking it.

by bobrouse! on Nov 13, 2008 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

It was a dumb penalty for sure but...

I like his feisty play tonight, aside from that dumb dumb move. Blake is most effective when he gets under the skin of his opponents.

by bkblades on Nov 13, 2008 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

sure, I hope he attracts the attention of a scout from Atlanta or something

by Polecon on Nov 13, 2008 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

ooooh baby baby it’s a wide world.

by bobrouse! on Nov 13, 2008 11:14 PM EST reply actions

As much as I've ragged on him...

…good for Blake. He’s played well tonight.

by clark4calder on Nov 13, 2008 11:15 PM EST reply actions

True

and good on him. Despite the whining, I don’t wish him ill. Yet.

Blurr!

What’s the westside word?

by clark4calder on Nov 13, 2008 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

Surprisingly, this game has made me a little bit more angry at Blake.

by lordosis on Nov 13, 2008 11:16 PM EST reply actions

Why?

Not saying you’re wrong, just curious.

by Mabel on Nov 13, 2008 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

His feistiness has gotten to you through the television screen, eh?

by bobrouse! on Nov 13, 2008 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

As in...

…where the fuck has this been for the last 2 years?

by clark4calder on Nov 13, 2008 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

not an uncommon feeling. He’ll now feel justified in his play and return to his previous ineffectiveness. AND he’s taken Kuly’s spot on the powerplay, which is affecting my pool. Hate Blake

by Polecon on Nov 13, 2008 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

All of these reasons are part of it, and not only that but didn’t like the lowbridge hit or the high stick on Deslauriers.

But mostly just because I don’t want a taste, I want the whole thing. And I fear that will never show. Blake bitching the past few days and then doing this tells me two things: 1) RW is a genius, and B) Blake is a whiny bitch who hasn’t been giving the team 100%.

by lordosis on Nov 13, 2008 11:21 PM EST up reply actions

You articulated an interesting mix of things there. Couldn’t agree more.

by bobrouse! on Nov 13, 2008 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

E=MC hammered must be more than a theory then.

by lordosis on Nov 13, 2008 11:24 PM EST up reply actions

Eh,

I don’t know if I’d get too carried away, Lord.

by bobrouse! on Nov 13, 2008 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

Far too irrational about Blake, look forward to his exit

by Polecon on Nov 13, 2008 11:24 PM EST up reply actions

Good points…I may have to take back my feelings of goodwill.

by clark4calder on Nov 13, 2008 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

So Blake

high-sticked the goalie on that one? Good for him

you are terrible

/shakes head

by Mabel on Nov 13, 2008 11:28 PM EST up reply actions

For all this talk about how the Leafs have no frontline players

Both Antropov and Grabovski would easily be the best players on the Oilers team right now.

by bkblades on Nov 13, 2008 11:25 PM EST reply actions

They’d certainly be top 6 forwards on a lot of teams.

by clark4calder on Nov 13, 2008 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

add in Hagman I think

by Polecon on Nov 13, 2008 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

And Blake would be top 6 on the Timbits.

by clark4calder on Nov 13, 2008 11:28 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe

But I think he’d be in tough to crack the top 9.

by Mabel on Nov 13, 2008 11:29 PM EST up reply actions

Well I was going by tonight's perfomance mainly

But otherwise, I agree. For all the talk about the Oilers being an up and coming team, it really means nothing if the said players don’t play up to par. Hemsky, Gagner, Penner, Cole, Horcoff, etc. were all told through the media that they were much better players than the Leafs.

by bkblades on Nov 13, 2008 11:30 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely

And what did they contribute? Hemsky dangled on the PP but did nothing. Gagner got a lucky PP goal. Cole and Penner were invisible. Who is Horcoff?

by PPP on Nov 13, 2008 11:31 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah...

…I heard Erik Cole’s name once in the first and never again. That guy always killed the Leafs when he was with the Canes.

by clark4calder on Nov 13, 2008 11:32 PM EST up reply actions

Cole was playing?

Yeesh. He was always a Leaf killer, so the fact that I had no idea he was on the ice makes me tingle in a good way.

by Mabel on Nov 13, 2008 11:33 PM EST up reply actions

More and more i think last year was an aberration for the oilers

This looks like where they should have been last season and it goes to show how meaningless past season performances really mean in the grand scheme of things.

by bkblades on Nov 13, 2008 11:33 PM EST up reply actions

No kidding

Things are coming back to earth. Meanwhile, a cute kid had a Grabbo for Calder banner. I am a Leaf fan and I approve that message.

I may have to change my name in honour of the campaign. I’m still bitter about 86.

by clark4calder on Nov 13, 2008 11:36 PM EST up reply actions

Was it Suter that year who stole the Calder?

I mean someone had to steal the trophy, otherwise Clark would have had to kill in the offseason as well.

by bkblades on Nov 13, 2008 11:38 PM EST up reply actions

Yes...

I can’t even bring myself to say his name. Not to mention the fact that he fucked up Gretzky’s back in the ’91 Canada Cup.
