it hit

1 degree in VanCity this morning… that was cold, but I still haven’t given in to wearing my Ontario winter coat… just my Vancouver “winter” coat… but I may have to tomorrow.

Plus, it’s cold in the office.

I was hemming a pair of pants for work on Monday night and went to open up the stitching on the pockets… when I realized they were fake pockets.

Having lived out east for a bit, I find winters in vancouver feel a little more miserable because of the lack of proper insulation in a lot of houses, and the fact that people (myself included) are stingy as hell with turning up the furnace.. Plus it’s a damp cold! brr!

by LeafFanInVan on Nov 19, 2008 1:54 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes

the damp cold is annoying, as is the fact that the people who live above us have no idea how to run a furnace (I’m freezing during the day, but wake up sweating at night!)

It’s still better than your toes freezing off as you walk through piles of snow, or having to encase your head in a hat and scarf so that you don’t get frostbite…

Do you know what awareness is?

That we’re all one. That separateness is an illusion, and that I’m one with everyone – with the Prime Minister of England, and my cousin Harry, you and me, the fat kid from ’What’s Happening,’ the Olsen twins, Natalie Portman, the guy who wrote ‘Catcher in the Rye,’ Nat King Cole, Carrot Top, Jay-Z, Weird Al Yankovic, Harry Potter, if he existed, the whore on the street corner, your mother. Ahh, Janice, I apologize to you if I don’t seem real eager to jump into a forced awkward intimate situation that people like to call dating. I don’t like the feeling. You’re sitting there you’re wondering “Do I have food on my face? Am I eating? Am I talking too much? Are they talking enough? Am I interested? I’m not really interested. Should I play like I’m interested? But I’m not that interested, but I think she might be interested. But do I want to be interested, but now she’s not interested, so now all of a sudden I’m getting—I’m started to get interested.” And when am I supposed to kiss her? Do I have to wait for the door ‘cause then it’s awkward? It’s like, well, “Goodnight. Do you do like the ass-out hug? Where you like, you hug each other like this and the ass sticks out because you’re trying not to get too close or just go right in and kiss them on the lips or don’t kiss them at all?” It’s very difficult trying to read the situation. And all the while your just really want to know are we going to get hopped up enough to make some bad decisions. And perhaps play a little game called just the tip, just for a second, just to see how it feels, or “Ouch, ouch, you’re on my hair.”

Probably lots of bad memories he didn’t want dredged up if that Frost trial is anything to go by.

It was interesting though – we were talking about the sweatbox incident with Downie and Aliu up in Windsor, and his response was pretty much “that’s what we all go through…I don’t see why we’re talking about this, it’s just part of hockey”.

I mean, that’s the part that I find so disconcerting…is how all this crazy shit becomes normalized and naturalized within this crazy culture of hockey.

sad...

it’s this kind of stuff that keeps a lot of kids out of organized sports. and it also makes some of the kids that went through it pretty scarred.

i dont know jack about phsycology, co i’m just talking out of my @$$ here, but that kind of thing could create a whole list of emotional issues you’d think…

ESPN usually has a special section every week or so called E:60 where they tackle the deeper issues in sport. They had one about hazing and baseball within a small community. It was quite eye-opening stuff, since the hazing that frequents minor league teams are perhaps the most tragic ones.

i saw that...

didn’t someone get arrested, the coach or something?

pretty sick stuff. Straight out of “Lord of the Flies” when you consider the age of some of these kids…

I’m not quite sure, but there was such backlash of bringing to much negative press to the community that a lot of the people there wanted this issue not to be brought into trial. It’s quite sad and pathetic that proper justice won’t properly be done because the town is afraid of dismantling the championship baseball team and sullying their town’s reputation.

by bkblades on Nov 19, 2008 5:33 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yes...

that’s the one.

in part, i get what people are doing. as twisted as that may sound. people generally live in small towns, specifically for the lack of spotlight. if it were my kid, i wouldn’t want the attention either. i agree that justice needs to be done, but in this day and age, you’re guilty by association, and ALWAYS before being proven innocent. I don’t think I’d want my kid going through that kind of circus, guilty or not…

Mike Danton certainly comes to mind. Or any of David Frost’s little proteges…

High performance sport kind of freaks me out in general, primarily for this reason.

I premix too

but then, partway through class, I always find I need a tich more booze to get me through it all. That’s why I put extra booze in the metal bottle, just in case.

One awesome thing about Toronto

Is that there is never a shortage of a variety of foods. There are so many roti and curry places in this city, it’s practically local Toronto eatery now.

by bkblades on Nov 19, 2008 5:30 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, there’s one up by my mom’s place that I really like.

In Edmonton, however, not so sure.

by dare_ on Nov 19, 2008 5:32 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There's one near Queen and Bathurst

That I occasionally visit when I’m done there. Queen Roti or something to that extent.

I would imagine Edmonton is like Halifax. A lot of certain types of restaurants (seafood, not surprisingly), but one or none of anything remotely too spicy or exotic.

by bkblades on Nov 19, 2008 5:36 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Admittedly

I haven’t done that great a job of seeking out good restaurants like I knew in Toronto and/or Kingston. I know there’s some good food to be had in Edmonton…I just need to actually find some of it. I just don’t want to deal with the trial and error associated with finding the good ones!

by dare_ on Nov 19, 2008 5:46 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I usually do the people check. If the people in the restaurant are a good mix themselves, more often than not, it’s going to be good food. If it’s generally a single type, I’m more reluctant.

But it’s different for every type of restaurant. For example, the older and less aesthetically pleasing the interiors are for Chinese restaurants, the better the food. Well, as long as they pass the food inspection agency, but I think that’s a given.

same goes...

for Mexican joints down here…

best, most authentic food is usually in the sketchiest of dives. although, my favorite is a more upscale joint we have here in town. They use a hot sauce called “Diablo” that cleares your sinuses, pores and colon in a single bite…:P

now, good mexican, that’s something that Vancouver kills Toronto on!

by Karina on Nov 19, 2008 5:57 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

a Hispanic friend was shocked that most of my “Mexican food” exposure was via Taco Bell and Bobby Salazar’s. Took me to a place called that looked about as clean as a gas station rest room, but the food was incredible! I couldn’t believe we didn’t have anything like that in TO, I told him I was glad I moved to CA, if just for the food.

It's true

I’ve never had anything even remotely mexican in TO… but it’s killer stuff here in VanCity.

Though for some reason, Pho is more expensive here. Still the standard stuff, but like $1 extra per bowl. Must be the cost of living thing… mmmm….. pho…..

by Karina on Nov 19, 2008 6:12 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There aren’t a ton of authentic Mexican/South American restaurants in Toronto, but there a few outside the downtown core. After I found a few of them, I have and will never frequent another Taco Bell again. Even the one Chipotle’s in Toronto that I know of, doesn’t really compete with those small family run Mexican joints in and around the surrounding areas of Toronto.

Hmm, that is strange that Pho is more expensive at Vancouver. Not that Toronto is a stranger to the Vietnamese restaurants by any means, but I assumed the only city that would have more East Asian restaurants in Canada than Toronto would be going crazy with so much competition. Didn’t economics tell me more supply = less demand?

by bkblades on Nov 19, 2008 6:23 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hah

but still, no matter where you go, it’s the same price… they’re just in cahoots with eachother!

Where outside of toronto are these good mexican restaurants? In all my years there, I never found a single one.

Granted, I haven’t visited many in awhile. I would imagine some of them have changed ownerships, but there is one near Bathurst and College, close to Mars diner. But I think it’s more Spanish and general Latin restaurant. But they have a dance floor last I remembered. Los Igauna’s recently closed down now in the Annex.

There’s one on Christie and Bloor that I like to go called Tacos El Asador. However, I’m probably the last person to ask about Mexican food, since they’re not my regular food ware.
