FTB - Habemus General Manager
When the College of Cardinals selects a new Pope they release white smoke into the air to signal that their closed door deliberations have been completed. In Toronto that can't work because there is always a white haze over the city. Instead, the first act on day one of 1 AB (Anno Burkem) was to hold a press conference. Thanks to MF37 for pointing out that the press conference from yesteday was available online. Watch it and reach your own conclusions about what Burke is saying. Here are some links to read while you ponder what he might do:
- Arch watches a lot of wrestling. I totally visualized that entire scene although in my version Burke brings down Peddie from the owner's box, pretends to raise his hands in triumph, then gives him the Rock Bottom and People's Elbow, and tells us fans that it was a double-cross and he's going to give us a Cup.
- Even Oilers fans know what this signing means. Although Burke wouldn't be tricked into calling himself Benedict XVI. Makes sense, there is no way a German could lead the Leafs.
- Jared has advice for Brian Burke.
- Burke sounds kind of crazy. I like it.
- Godd and Kim also have some good advice.
- This reads like a Garrioch story. Lots of qualifiers but no proof whatsoever.
- Alec has some thoughts on day 1 of the Burke Era.

He used...
the word truculence. Properly. And called the media’s intellect into question.

I’ve added a DGB post about how awesome the Ottawa Sun hockey coverage is getting.
Also, Big Smoke link is broken, it should be:

So, we have Ty Cobb as top dude in the organization. Which, though possibly painful for those within earshot, could also be quite promising. As a Burke sceptic, I must confess that I was rather impressed by Burke’s talking points in his introduction. Like most successful guys who are full of piss and vinegar, Burke’s bluster is most likely a public persona that he uses on occasion to achieve his objectives. That said, his power within the organization was established before his turn at the podium. But in a short introductory speech, he managed to cram in ass kissing, soothing words for those who suspect his tendancies, a large vocabulary to establish his presence as smartest guy in the room and then topped it off with self-deprecation. He can now bask in the media glow without being second guessed, at least until the new year.
While we can only wait and see for the effect of his carefully chosen discourse on those for whom it was targeted, we can observe who played with a little bit more gusto than usual last night as the basis for who took the bait. Dominic Moore was a house on fire, Kulemin looked a little less lost and Schenn didn’t fight. I also noticed that the coach was a little more combative than usual in the post game. I especially like his reproach of bloggers and their crazy suggestions. Do you think he was referring to Mirtle?

Wait, when did Brian Burke become a racist, hateful, and all around, absolutely vile excuse of a human being?
I especially like his reproach of bloggers and their crazy suggestions. Do you think he was referring to Mirtle?
I was almost certain Ron Wilson was lambasting the regular reporters who cover the Leafs in the mainstream media than anyone else. What “crazy suggestion” are you referring to in regards to Mirtle?

It’s not about what he is, we don’t know him as a person. The truth is in the hands of those who have the power to define it. Unless you met Ty Cobb, we don’t know who he really was either. I was referring to the CBC link, and its portrayal of Burke that he is either managing, or is allowing to be made of him. As for racism, this was the way dominance over others was done back in the day. This has changed, or become more subtle. Using the word Euro/socialist/immigrant/treehugger is a purposely vague term that avoids actually naming the target of your hate. Burke has denied this categorically , so lets give him the benefit of the doubt. He may still be a vile human being and an exceptional hockey executive, but only his wives and family will ever know that.
As for the Wilson comments, he specifically said bloggers. I thought that it was funny and did not take personal offense. I mentioned Mirtle because I know that Wilson is technologically savvy, but cannot imagine him reading a Blog, and if he did, would not waste his time with us lesser lights. Again, humour.

Oh well, so much for that press pass. Probably would have lost it when I told The Omen that he was a dumbass….600 times in one game.

I posted about getting a tough guy like Andre Deveaux, the Leafs called up Andre Deveaux.
I posted about how yanking Toskala from the shootout was a dumb idea and Wilson shouldn’t do it anymore, and now Wilson doesn’t do it anymore.
I posted about Hollweg being garbage, and that he should be in press box, and Wilson put him in the press box (until other guys got hurt).
I posted about how the Leafs should trade Carlo Colaiacovo, and they traded Carlo Colaiacovo.
I posted that they should roll Jason Blake up in a carpet and dump him in Lake Ontario, and Wilson was recently seen shopping for fabrics even though he has hardwood floors at home.
Ron Wilson recently bought the Nickelback album and some McDonalds french fries.
He reads DGB. He reads, and he pays attention.

James suggested resting Toskala until he got over his troubles. Wilson got angry and then played Cujo on Tuesday which is kind of funny.

around the 4 minute mark, as peddie is doing his thanks, he seems to stumble on the fact that gord kirke was a valuable resource. peddie stared at the page, as if he was trying to comprehend that fact for some reason…
