Martin Brodeur out 3-4 months
I've always hated Martin Brodeur, but more importantly there's no way New Jersey is going to the playoffs without him.
Keep up the good fight Comeback Kids, you could be playing more than 82 this year.

Normally I don't celebrate when someone gets injuried...
Oh who am I trying to kid?
Ha! Good riddance I say.
I don’t know why, I’ve never liked Brodeur… unless he was in a Team Canada jersey.

sorry...
i admit his coxian affiliation is disturbing, but I so prefer Marty over “Saint” Patrick.

??? How do you guys not like him? Iron man in a tough position (how does a goalie NOT pull something in like, 13 years?), a great leader, cool and collected in interviews, friendly to all players and fans. I wish more players were like him. And he was on the Leafs. #1 goalie in my books (Roy was and always will be an ass, thanks to genes in his just as F’d up kid).
And Jersey will still make it on their underrated D, assuming their injuries up front come back soon (defensive minded Holik, and all-round good Rolston).
Divorced his wife and married his sister, oh yeah!

Wait
Are you talking about Brodeur? He was never on the Leafs.
Brodeur is a very good goalie but I’ve always considered him overrated, he’s always played behind either a stellar defense or an incredibly tight trap system.
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
now you're talking crazy...
sure he never played for the Leafs, but it’s Ok to admit he’s a phenomenal athelete. He doesn’t put up the kind of numbers he has over his career without being somewhat capable of playing his position. He benefits from a GM who recognizes what his teams strengths are (goaltending) and built a team and system to complement and augment those strengths.
He’s very compact and businesslike, a throwback goalie, not all limbs a flailing like Hasek, or pouty and showy like Roy. I respect what he’s done, and am glad he’s knocking Roy off the all time wins peak.

Damn straight. It isn’t that he played in a tight defence system. HE WAS THE SYSTEM. A mediocre goalie could theoritically get the wins he has, but the shut-outs? the stellar save percentage against a relatively low number of shots? No way.
And yeah, sorry about the punctuation. I meant I wish he was on the leafs.
He anchored the system
Agreed on that, but when your team is focused so heavily on defence including having some of the best defensive players in the league and playing that style… well…
I’m probably going to be called crazy on that but look at Toronto when Eddie was around and before his back blew out on him… the guy was a rock, the Leafs had no defensive system and the only thing keeping them from being buried under an inane number of goals was pretty much Eddie himself and Kabby’s slick puck-handling. In this case Eddie was not only the system, he was the ONLY ONE in the system. In my books I consider Belfour to be a better goalie than Brodeur (when he was sober), go ahead and call me crazy.
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
Belfour was great. Top 5 in the last 20 years for sure. But Brodeur didn’t have much for defence since Stevens retired. To be honest, that’s when everyone started doubting them, but they still keep making it. Rafalski is good, but still more of a Offensive-minding man.
Goalie greatness is still a complete opinion discussion. And personally, I put Brodeur up at the top.
agreed...
after Stevens and Niedermeyer, the d got thin. they lucked out with rafalski (finding him in finland after going undrafted) but not much in the way of “high caliber” d men in the swamp for quite some time now, yet Marty still gets the wins and shutouts…

Not crazy
I said he’s a very good goalie, I don’t think he’s “phenomenal” though.
I don’t like old “Fish-Flop” (Hasek) either, I had no issue admitting he was very skilled, doesn’t mean I like him.
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
haha…Hasek just looked like he did a line of coke before every game washed down with some bad back-alley vodka….
His style
was very exciting to watch, because you had no idea what he was doing (probably the same thing to the players as well) but he always somehow manages to keep the puck out, it was weird and spectular and horrifying all at the same time
I hated his attitude though, frigging prima dona

Weekes
What’s the over/under on number of games Weekes starts before Lou circumvents the cap to bring in another goalie? “We just wanted to provide Kevin some help,” they’ll say…
SBN now has a NY Islanders blog at LighthouseHockey.com.
who's available?
I know Roli’s out there, not sure how keen the Oil are on moving him. Not at a lot of options for Lou…

Roloson for someone like Zubrus or Rupp maybe? Oil need a bit of toughness like that, but that can play center.
ya...
NJ’s screwed.

Roloson can’t be too pleased with being # 2 so he’s definitely available. I would think that he’s the best option on the market.

Hate?
I don’t see how even opposing team fans can hate on Marty.. He took a team discount because he had bought into the system and the plans that Lou had for the team. He’s a definite leader of the team and I personally have never thought of him as anything but a classy guy.
Let’s not delve into the player’s personal lives, I know a few Leaf deities have similar past indiscretions.. And even having the Coxmaster as a biographer isn’t enough, guilty by association doesn’t cut it.
Guilty by Association
always cuts it. Agreed on the personal life though. i don’t care who he’s doinking, has doinked, or is planning on doinking in the very near future. I just want him to get those 6 or 7 wins he needs before the season is over, which may still be possible…

I Heart Marty
But only on Team Canada.
Otherwise I Heart Marty because he’s going to usurp St. Patrick as the best goalie ever and that makes me smile.

I can't hate Brodeur
because he’s so damn good. His consistency is simply tremendous.
He’s way better than Roy in my books.
A Toronto sports blog, where we unequivocally and unapologetically support the home team...
I can hate Brodeur
He’s the lynchpin of boring-ass hockey. Last years Devil’s tried to play an up-tempo game early on and Brodeur’s numbers exploded. Sutter went back to Devil-basics, they vied with Pittsburgh for the division.
It’s also frustrating as hell to watch the Leafs play the guy. Except for their last meeting, of course.
Patrick Roy is arguably the greatest Montreal Canadiens goaltender in their history
As such, I can’t rank Marty Brodeur above Roy. Brodeur isn’t far back (check out his stats from last season, arguably the best in his career), but Roy’s playoff records (most wins, most minutes, most shutouts, most overtime wins in a single playoffs) are what puts him over the top. A two-time Conn Smythe winner with Montreal (three in total), Roy carried his less than stacked Montreal teams to the Stanley Cup in both 1986 and 1993. Now I feel so dirty.
All the more reason why the Kings “defeat” of the Leafs ’93 team was even more painful, since we would have dominated Les Habs.
I have brodeur in my Boo Fantasy pool, and Gonchar too, I’m hosed
Because Taking The Leafs Seriously Is Not An Option
not hosed, you have excellent excuses now! Don’t be afraid to suck if you can blame something or someone else! heh
Patrick Sharp and Pat Kane will keep me near the middle, but still, I wanna win damnit.
