Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

From The Branches - Making History Edition

Lots of links on this historic morning. This is one of the few times we'll break our no politics rule but here's a look at worldwide newspaper frontpages, euphoria in the US, and around the world. Now, back to our regularly scheduled Leafs' programming. Also, you'll all want to be here at 12:30 for a special unveiling.

Toss any others in the comments.

No wayz

No amount of goals by Welly will make up for Stajan’s Eyes, LD will tells ya.

Plus Welly may be doing well but look at Vancouver’s line-up, they are not exactly an offensive powerhouse, I’m not surprised Welly is leading the charge there.

Wellwood

I think he benefits from the type of system the Canucks favour – dump, chase, cycle. He can hoof it down to whatever sweet spot he wants to occupy in front of the net and the pucks seem to find his way over to him. I don’t think he would have anywhere near the same kind of success in the current fast break offense favoured by wilson right now.. Just a thought.

And yeah, he’ll probably fizzle out once defenders key onto him more and start playing him tough..

by LeafFanInVan on Nov 5, 2008 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

Wellwood

is proof that you don’t give up on an asset that easily.

There's no point debating this

Wellwood is doing well because he learned his lesson.

He learned his lesson because the Leafs didn’t take his shit and got rid of him.

Would he have learned the same lesson if he was sent to the minors by the Leafs? Maybe, but we’ll never know.

Fletcher has played that game before with a better talent – see Nilsson, Kent. I still think that influenced the way he dealt with Wellwood.

No...

Wellwood is proof that some guys don’t get, and will never get it until they get a good hard kick in the ass.

If the Leafs had kept him, he wouldn’t have six goals right now. He’d have had it confirmed for him, again, that being fat and lazy is fine as long as you have a little bit of skill mixed in. The Leafs gave him plenty of chances and he kept calling their bluff.

They didn’t give up on him, they did him a favor. He was never going to be a top player for the Leafs, so it really doesn’t matter what he does somewhere else.

Wilson was hired early June. Wellwood released late June.

If you’re changing the culture, and you’ve got a guy who clearly has offensive skill, but clearly needs multiple swift kicks in the ass, why not let Wilson have a go at him?

Especially considering this team was going to be offensively challenged.

Wellwood may fizzle out again. Sure, he’s got 6 goals, majority on the power play, and no one will be surprised if he ends up back in the minors. All I’m saying is that to discard an asset like that didn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Sports And The City

by eyebleaf on Nov 5, 2008 10:10 AM EST up reply actions

Isn't the point...

…that getting rid of Welly set the table (among the remaining players) for Wilson’s regime?

Fat Boy had to have been told many times before that he was expected to bring the commitment, and that included being in shape. He didn’t do it. Tolerate that, and you leave doubt among the players about the organization’s commitment to changing the culture. Getting rid of him sends the signal that you can have all the promise you want, but you WILL toe the organizational line, or you won’t have a job, at least not here.

but DGB is right, I don’t think he would have been motivated if he stuck around. Also, with his history as a player, I’ve got to agree, this point production won’t last. Of course, I don’t think Stajan’s will either. Steen, I’m beginning to think, will never be the creative offense-minded center we all want him to be, and I’m Ok with that. He does a great job as a checking forward, and we can always use one of those…

After Wilson was hired he was definately consulted about which players he thought he could work with. Wellowood was obviously someone he identified as not being worth the trouble.

by general borschevsky on Nov 5, 2008 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

He has reached players that have never been benched or scratched before and have since reacted. Wellwood had been scratched plenty as a Leaf and told to shape up and he didn’t.

What makes you think that he would have done so without the massive shock of being let go for nothing AND getting demoted after being called out as a fatty by his new coach?

I think

Welly was given that chance, probably more then once, and he never jumped on it nor shown any interest

Yes, Wilson has demonstrated he can give any player a swift kick in the ass, but for the most part these players are having their asses kicked for the first time… Welly’s had his ass kicked before, and it didn’t work so they had to escalate the ass kicking

"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)

by Winkle on Nov 5, 2008 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

This goes back to Wilson’s comments with regard to Luke Schenn and how Wilson has to show integrity in his process. Stajan, Blake, and White had not been healthy scratched and had reached a point where they thought that their spot in the NHL was a given.

Wellwood knew that he was on the edge of going out and still did nothing.

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.

by PPP on Nov 5, 2008 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

The only reason

that Wellwood is in shape at all is because the Canucks went out and hired someone to cook his meals

Could the Leafs have done the same thing? Sure, I guess. But even watching him play for Vancouver, I’ve seen this show before… it won’t last. His defense still isn’t very strong, he’s too easily knocked off the puck. The only way he’ll continue to put up points is if Vigneault keeps playing him on the PP with the Sedins. He’s good at finding the open areas and seems to have taught him the cross-crease pass trick that helped Tucker score so many goals. And we all know how long that lasted. No regrets here, just frustration as I see my adopted home fall in love with Wellwood, knowing exactly what they feel and how it’ll end.

Did anyone

have any idea that anyone on this team would be this good?

I don't think

we saw enough of him in Dallas last year to think he’d be this good.

He’s great on the puck. I love the puck possession skills of he and Grabs.

Ha

They like to grab and hag the puck.

I’m full of win.

more than one man can handle!

the talk was hagman would be a steadying defensive presence among the top 6, and his goals were an aberration. turns out, he’s the type of guy who plays what the coach tells him to. so if he’s put on a checking line, he plays two way positional hockey. if he’s put in a scoring line, he lights it up.

also, i ♥ him

HAHAHA

During the World Cup in Germany I live streamed games over lunch and got a similar e-mail after the tournament was over because the company paid based on band-width used. Whoops!
