Those are valid reasons for sending Schenn down

But I think we’re underestimating the mindset of an 18 year old… I dunno

I just go back to the fact that we aren’t trying to develop a kid to be great in the WHL. The infrastructure is here in Toronto to maximize his development. In Kelowna they are giving up control which I don’t like.

I told eyebleaf if he brings it up again, it’s a stabbin’. I don’t want to do it, but he’ll force my hand.

Seriously though, he has valid concerns, all of which, I think Cliff and Ron have probably discussed and addressed internally. We all know Cliff’s working the phones for a trade, and I still think it’s Kubina or Kaberle that go before Cola, White or even Van Ryn. They have this imaginary line in the sand at the age of 30, so I think those that are under it have a better chance of sticking around than those that do

using a typewriter.

(Yes, I am old. At least according to people at school. We were working on a project, and someone said “We’ll do this for old people, you know, people over 30.” I nearly punched them.)

Funny but true story

I went to a snowboard show in T.O. a few weeks back (ski, snowboard and travel show), and the whole time I was there I kept mumbling to my girlfriend “what the hell are these kids wearing these days” and “all these gang and hip-hop snowboard graphics make me sick” and then it hit me, I’m old.

Nice job on Blake

I don’t want to hate any Leaf, but I really can’t imagine ever liking him or thinking he’s a valuable member of this team. He has never won anything, not even a playoff round.

3 career playoff goals in 24 games, never once made it out of the first round.

DGB made a good point in the comments to that post:

…from watching him the past two years, Blake must lead the NHL in shots that result in a whistle. His long shots, almost without exception, are easy glove saves that result in a faceoff.

It’s like icing the puck, only in reverse. A lot of his shots have that “looking to slow things down, or get a line change” feel to them.

Long story short: Blake sucks. JFJ double sucks.

by general borschevsky on Nov 7, 2008 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks!

Agreed re: DGB’s comment. I think you could probably track that sort of thing with the RTSS reports at NHL.com. I may yet take a Saturday afternoon and try to figure that out.

I haven’t warmed up to Blake either; the fist pumps on meaningless goals and a lack of commitment to get involved in tight are not the way to encourage Junior to start filling out an application for membership in your fan club. That being said, I have to believe it has been very difficult for him to really bring the focus on hockey over the last two years, given his health problems and the fact that he has a young family. I think it’s difficult to fault him as a person for that; he’s only human.

Whatever the reason, his contribution to the team has been shite.

I get tired of seeing the Leafs surrender so many fucking goals. I can’t help but think Schenn doesn’t either. It just can’t be good for his mindset. And we’re at 73.4% on the penalty kill. Dead last in the league.

I think his entry level deal has kicked in, but his eligibility only kicks in after 41 games in the NHL. We still have time to send him down.

And if Cliff is working the phones for a trade, teams will likely be more interested in guys like Colaiacovo. If he does want to trade Carlo, and I hope he doesn’t, he’s got to be showcasing him, not having him up in the press box. I don’t imagine anyone taking Kaberle or Kubina’s contract

…and especially if he wants to make sure he picks a team that doesn’t play a game in Toronto, he will be roundly booed in a figurative sense, and he’ll have it coming.

His Toronto legacy will become that hollow and unnecessary attempt to explain himself last season, and that’s a shame, but it’s his doing.

Perfect. I’ve always like Hodge, ever since he threw his pencil.

Yeah, Sundin changed his mind, THE FIRST TIME ANYONE IN THE HISTORY OF MAN has ever done that, and his legacy in Toronto is now tarnished.

Oh, the humanity.

If people don't accept him

because of that lame excuse, then they don’t deserve him. I’ve always loved him, well, almost always. It was kinda hard at first, what with the wendel thing, but once I got over that, I wholeheartedly embraced him. Who cares if he isn’t Canadian? He’s the awesome.

by Mabel on Nov 7, 2008 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

….because he’s not Canadian and wasn’t as "rugged" as them.

Only half-true, specifically the rugged part. Sundin doesn’t fight and he doesn’t really hit. We all know what Wendel could do, and in his first two years with the Leafs Dougie compltely captured our hearts because he was amazing and did everything.

It’s not fair to say “because he’s not Canadian”. Forsberg or Bure, if they had been Leafs in their youth would have been hugely popular. Nik Borschevsky is still remembered with great pride and joy. Kulemin has already found popularity. And let’s not forget Danny Markov, or Borje Salming.

But in order to be revered on the same level with Clark or Gilmour, you’ve got to fight, and hit, and fight, and hit, knock guys over, get knocked over, get back up, join the scrum and find a dance partner, back your teammates up in the corners, fight, hit, fight, hit, score the occasional goal, and get really pissed off when we’re getting screwed. Then fight and hit some more. Being popular in Toronto is more then just lookin’ pretty.

Finally, don’t get me wrong, I love Sundin, and I want him to come back. I’m just don’t deal well with rejection, that’s all.

by general borschevsky on Nov 7, 2008 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

I don't like rejection either

But so what the he didn’t fight? He played through injuries with the best of ‘em. He fought through all sorts of crap, both on and off the ice, and he has my eternal respect for that. Plus, the fact that he didn’t once punch a member of the msm in the face during his whole tenure here (and there were at least 15 occasions where I wanted to punch one of them for him.) He got hit, he got back up, he scored. He did this all with craptastic wingers.

I know I’m a girl, and as such, my opinion on this probably doesn’t count, but fighting isn’t everything. And yeah, he wasn’t Dougie or Wendel. Well, who is?

Mats is the awesome. Period. Full stop.

by Mabel on Nov 7, 2008 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

But

That’s the way the NHL is moving too, you see two general types of player, the ones who are more skill-oriented who can really skate smoothly, stick-handle or snipe, and the tough front-line kinda guy who crashes the net, creates traffic or screens the goalie, who fights and who checks and hits hard. You rarely see players who do both.

I think the whole “I don’t like him as much cuz he’s Swedish” is just a lazy cop-out. The player who can score, hit, and do everything in between like Gilmour are relics of the past, they just aren’t out there anymore.

All that talk of guys loving to play with him and have him as their leader was bullshit. You know, because Sundin didn’t get up when he got knocked down. He didn’t go into the corners to back up his teammates. And he didn’t get really pissed off.

He was only Mr. Clutch for the Leafs. He only led the team in scoring every year, and captained the Leafs to their most successful seasons ever, points wise.

it’s a complete sack of crap because just because he’s not as much of a grinder as the other two doesn’t make the other two better hockey players. Clark had two seasons of 60 points or more. Two! Not just fighhting majors that count. Have you seen the courage he showed in getting in Stu Grimson’s way when he went nuts (3:57)? Or watch him here be the first to go after Brett Lindros after a hit from behind on Gill. Dougie didn’t get many fighting majors bu he seemed to be in the middle of every scrum.

I was going to say the exact same thing

The Big M was exactly like Mats Sundin, it’s uncanny. From the long, effortless strides to the heavy, booming shot, Mahovlich was always the most popular AND most criticized superstar the Leafs ever had in their existence. Well, until Mats Sundin came strolling in 30 years later. Like Mahovlich, one of the main things against Sundin is his lack of all star team selections. He’s only been a Second All Star as his highest honour, very similar to Mahovlich. Sundin is always seen negatively in outside circles, but whenever a coach sees him firsthand (for example, I remember Paul Maurice not being a big fan of Sundin until he became coach), they change their tune completely.

I still maintain if Imlach didn’t run his reign of terror against The Big M, we’re talking about one of the top 25 players ever, and one of the best left wingers to ever play the game.

But if he goes somewhere else then I think he is quitting on the Leafs. He has said that to finish his career and retire a Maple Leaf is his DREAM. Cliff and Ron have made that a possibilty by not naming a Captain as successor, by leaving plenty of cap space available, by saying they would welcome him with open arms. Fletcher even went so far as to give Mats a “clear picture” of his intentions. How many free-agents are privy to the building strategies of general managers? So what’s the hold up? Do we smell?

If he retires, that’s not quitting on us. However, if he goes somewhere else, specifically – to any team other then, it will feel like abandonement.

I was 12. I didn’t know he asked to leave. I just know that he got traded and that angered me. Now I know and it hurts me but at least when he wanted to retire as a Leaf he got his team to trade him back.

Meanwhile, your hero has every opportunity to do that and he’d rather lie about his desire (don’t give me change your mind because it doesn’t pass the smell test) and then maybe sign elsewhere.

Although, as I have said before, it’s all theoretical because Mats has not signed elsewhere. We’re upset over something that hasn’t happened yet.

by PPP on Nov 7, 2008 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve got to give you the change your mind bit because I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

You say that he’s doing what suits him, and that angers you, but that’s exactly what Dougie did. He did what suited him best, and that’s fine, that what these guys should do. Because that’s what we would do if we were in their position. There is no loyalty. Not on management’s side and not on the player’s side.

His reasoning behind not waving his NTC last year was because, as he says, he truly believed the Leafs would make the playoffs. Clearly, he’s as big of an idiot as I him. But I’ll admire that blind faith, cuz it kind of turns me on.

What does retiring as a Leaf do for me? How does that make him more or less of a hero to me? He gave me the best years of his hockey life, while surrounded by garbage. He did the best he could in a tough market where he was never fully embraced by media and fans, and never once complained about it. Not once.

If over the summer he thought, yeah, it would be nice to get a ring, and it’s not going to happen in Toronto, maybe it would be best to go somewhere else, that doesn’t make him less of a hero to me. Not one bit.

We tried in Toronto. We fucking tried. Getting Nolan. Getting Leetch. We had some good teams here. And we had some great playoff runs. It just didn’t happen. Our window closed. And now with that window shut, we expect a 37 year old Sundin not to think about going somewhere else? Why?

And I’ve had many people, to my face, say that they don’t like Sundin as much as Gilmour or Clark because he’s Swedish. That’s it, that’s all. This is the type of bullshit Mats has had to deal in this fucking city. And I think he’s a better hockey player than both those guys.

Word

I hate all those people who pull the “he should have waived his no trade” line. He had the clause for a reason, he didn’t have to waive it. Like it or not (and I totally get why he didn’t) that’s the way it is, so sack up and deal with it.

Really? People actually said that to you? Were any of them Don Cherry? Gah. People suck. He is as rugged as they come, and I wish him well (unless he signs with Ottawa or Montreal, in which case I wish a first round playoff exit. I’m only so nice.)

Disney World is more of a proper vacation. Disneyland is the place where kids go hang out after school, or when they ditch, and all the stay at home moms head down there with their little ones to waste the day. Disney World is more secluded and confined as a world within itself.

Two nights later, I was there when Gilmour shattered his knee. I cried tears of immense sadness, and proceeded to get crazy drunk. Somehow, me and my brother knew that Gilmour would never return…

He claims he is “watching the fatty foods as much as anyone right now.” And that his mom gets upset hearing all the stuff about his weight, which I get, but put down the fork!

Then he talked about the injuries taking their toll.

Luongo wearing the C. Boring.

And finally, dressing room/media stuff:

“on edge in the room in toronto… not comfortable…taboo to sit around and watch tv with a coffee”

“get out the soccer ball…west coast relaxation…get a coffee” (man, that guy like his caffeine)

And then, he claims that the media in both cities are the same. But that in Toronto the guys pay attention, but in Van they don’t. Bwahahaha!

And actually

I’m mostly referring to the student life-style… and how flexible and carefree it was.

I could not get up for my morning classes, stay up as late as I wanted, partied whenever I could, or just do whatever I wanted… life was so less rigidly structured… I mean there was a guideline but it was up to you as to how closely you wanted to follow it.

Now my life is completely structured, work has made life routine and I basically live weekend to weekend, whereas before every day was a weekend. And once you’re in you can’t get out until you’re old and retired, because now I’m making money I’m tied down to retirement savings, paying for bills, saving up for a house and a car, and lets not even speak of marriage and having kids… those are massively long-term investments that requires huge funding as I’m sure you’re well aware of Blurr…

Yea, i just find it all very depressing. I’m trying to enjoy it as much as I can before I get tied down but its like I’m only delaying the inevitable. It’s like my life ended once I graduated from school.

But I sooooo coast through high school and still maintained an 80 average.

I talked to her and she was so pissed off and upset and was calling herself a failure and everything after the teacher refused to budge. I wanted to bitch-slap her so bad.
