What is with all these cheap shots from Montreal? Normally you expect crap like that from a team without talent. This team has a lot of really good players.

Facts are facts. They can win games without pulling that kind of crap. It’s completely unneccessary, and they don’t need to do that – especially not so many times. It’s just classless and dumb.

You can argue they may have talent, but aren’t very good if they can’t manage to avoid hitting from behind or slew-footing someone.

Grabs has to be more careful, or else he will get punished, legal or illegal. But it still gives no excuse for the Habs to go all Bryan Marchment/Chris Pronger on the Leafs tonight.

by bkblades on Nov 8, 2008 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

True, and I’d really like to know the backstory and why he’s so hated by the habs (is it all really just because he bitched about icetime?)

by lordosis on Nov 8, 2008 9:57 PM EST up reply actions

It was in all honesty, a flaky move by Grabs who left the Habs during the middle of a road trip because he kept getting benched. I totally understand the Habs hating him, but why it’s okay to kick the guy by Saku with nary a line of criticism is beyond me.

Only problem with that

Is if someone like Ovechkin hits someone like Tlusty in the playoffs, what’s to stop the Leafs from fabricating Tlusty’s injuries so he’s out longer

by lordosis on Nov 8, 2008 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

It wouldn’t be such a problem if the NHL weren’t afraid to disclose injuries.

by bkblades on Nov 8, 2008 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

Just cause they disclosed doesnt mean then wouldn’t exaggerate

by lordosis on Nov 8, 2008 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

Especially in playoffs, when players play through pain. So maybe they’d sit that 4th liner with “soreness” if it kept the star who hit him illegally out.

Guess if the illegal hits didn’t occur, people couldn’t complain, but it also might have a bit of an adverse effect on the amount of hitting going on overall

by lordosis on Nov 8, 2008 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

I’m sure there would be some exaggerations as you say. But with disclosure comes better insurance claims. The whole point of disclosure (for insurance purposes) is also to make sure they don’t get screwed from paying more money. The insurance companies will make damn sure there won’t be any funny business so they don’t pay more money than they have to.

by bkblades on Nov 8, 2008 10:16 PM EST up reply actions

The insurance company pays for all injuries, or just major ones? I am quite ignorant to how things like that go on in the NHL.

by lordosis on Nov 8, 2008 10:18 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think it's for minor ones like the flu or soreness

But I’m not speaking from first hand knowledge unfortunately. But long-term injuries, I believe the team will try to ask for the insurance to pay their medical bills and such, or at least have money set aside for those purposes.

Some of us were discussing this earlier, but it doesn’t help the Leafs if he forces the Leafs to keep defending his ass if he continues to look for it. The Habs were an exception because of his prior history, but his “diving” and butt-ending is going to get Grabs injured and get his teammates in trouble, too. I can’t be mad at Grabs for a game like tonight. I know he wants to stick it to the Habs very, very badly.

He’s got his pride. And he was given up on by Montreal…so I’m goin to let him have tonight.

I have to defend lordosis here

Blake did not have a good game at all. He took a couple of needless penalties and was generally ineffective tonight. He did make a great pass to spring Jamal Mayers on a breakaway, but he was pretty invisible.

I liked the goalie interference call he took! It was the third in a row for the Leafs and it seemed to increase the tension in the game. I think the Leafs and the crowd fed off of that. Good job Blake.

by general borschevsky on Nov 8, 2008 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

I don't hate him

But he’s trying to do too much. I think we can all agree Blake’s never going to approach 40 goals, but he’s still playing like he has to pot 40 goals, plus be an effective checker. He’s confused right now and unfortunately, he’s costing the Leafs chances and ineffective breakdowns in the offensive zone. Someone on the coaching staff needs to tell Blake he has to play a similar role to Moore. I’m not sure if Blake is willing to fall into that role though.

by bkblades on Nov 8, 2008 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

he is the classic example of a guy who comes to toronto and has his career go down in the flames of FAIL.

it breaks my heart, cuz he put up 50 points last year, regardless of the cancer and all the bullshit.

I’m conflicted to tell you the truth. I want Blake to do well, too, if only to make the contract more palpable (not that it matters now). But if Blakes struggles means the younger guys on our team gets their opportunity and takes over the scoring role, I’m all for it. In the end, I think I’m willing to take Blake struggles over the prospects stinking up the joint.

by bkblades on Nov 8, 2008 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

it's tough

for him to justify that contract when he’s playing 13 minutes a night on the third or fourth line…but that’s what he deserves, because he simply hasn’t been that good…

by lordosis on Nov 8, 2008 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. And that all comes to confidence. His not being happy shows me that he’s a competitive SOB and is havin trouble falling asleep at night dealin with his struggles.

I don’t want a guy to be like Raycroft and say, as the season ends without the playoffs, that he’s happy with his season. I want him to be pissed off.

That’s pretty much what it boils down to in the end. I don’t understand what the point in ripping your fellow Leafs really amounts to as well (isn’t it pretty crappy that you’re badmouthing a guy on your team that needs to do well to make the team more successful?), but I can see the frustration with players like Blake.

The bottom line is, the worst thing Blake could have done was to sign with the Leafs. The Leafs weren’t a good fit for him, but damn it, he wanted to succeed here. The troubling thing to me is that he wants to succeed so much, it’s affecting his linemates and generally bringing them down unfortunately.

by bkblades on Nov 8, 2008 11:21 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t see him pissed off to be honest, I see him to be annoyed. I almost see a lack of competitiveness and fire, and more about him being unhappy with how HE is doing, and not the team.

by lordosis on Nov 8, 2008 11:22 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t get the constant Blake rippin as well. Same with Ian White. I wish this fascination with having one guy we all rip on would die. It’s pointless. We all want the Leafs to do well.

Obviously we want all the Leafs to do well, but just cause they’re Leafs doesn’t mean we have to love them unequivocally. Right now, at this time, I don’t like Blake because to me he’s not putting in the effort that is needed, or adapting to the system well enough.

by lordosis on Nov 8, 2008 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

I understand

your points. But guys were hating on Blake before this season even began. That’s what I mean.

Same with White. It seems one scapegoat is always required.

What ails this Leafs team is poor defensive zone coverage and poor penalty killing. I wouldn’t blame Blake or White for those problems.

I will for Blake because he along with the others have lapses in judgment and have been guilty of looking for their offence first. White I can’t blame so much simply because he hasn’t played enough.
