Allies 6, Axis 3

On a night when HNIC honours heroes of the real and sporting type, the Leafs pick a great time to play what is increasingly becoming the mark of these 08/09 Leafs: 60 minutes of being a team that no one in the NHL enjoys playing against.

Similar to the brave boys who went overseas and heroically took care of business in two World Wars, the Leafs stared into the ugly face of evil (the Habs), and refused to let even the most despicable, inhumane behaviour (Kostopoulos, Kostitsyn), stem the inevitable tide of triumphant victory!

Throwing everything at the Habs is the only way to beat an enemy that will stop at nothing to ensure that every single little Johnny and Susie Canada out there are decked out head to toe in bleu, blanc et rouge. Is that what good, honest Canadians want? Well Mr. and Mrs. Maple Leaf, You say NO! Do your part to halt this Tri-Coleured Menace threatening our precious way of life! Good point on Grabby/Koivu exchange

Off a poster on Brownscombe’s HB article: “Well, if Grabs needs an interpreter to answer questions to the media, unless Koivu speaks Russian, I doubt whatever he said really meant all that much to Grabs.”

From AP:

The incident left Kostopoulos visibly shaken. He planned to give Van Ryn a call to apologize.

“I was trying to get in there, get a hit and get the puck,” Kostopoulos said. “Like I said, I didn’t anticipate him turning and I couldn’t stop myself. And I hope he’s all right.”

Not to dwell on this too much, but I’m not sure how much I buy into this explanation from Kostopoulos. I understand when things happen in the moment it’s hard to ease up. But from the replays, it seemed Kostopoulos made sure to give an extra shove to Van Ryn because he turned his back. Call it temporary insanity or what not, and I don’t think he wanted to hurt Van Ryn, but it wasn’t an accident.

It's funny

The Habs were always the ancient rivals. But the rivalry definitely waned in recent years, at least in sheer animosity. But this year’s Leafs seem to really take things personally, no matter who their opponents are on that particular night. With all that’s gone through tonight and the shellacking they received earlier this season (Coach Carbo deliberately kept his top line up for several shifts at the end of the game), I think the Leafs really do hate this team at a visceral level. And what’s more, the Habs look like they’re hating the Leafs as well for not laying down and dying, like they did last game. The animosity from the Leafs appeared to throw the Habs off their game and all those questionable plays were no doubt cheap ways to vent.

I think we’re going to see a renewal of a real, palpable hate between two teams that don’t like each other at all.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who though Antropov was hurt at first. I didn’t see that he was entangled with Ponikarovsky, and I wondered how badly he was hurt for his legs to be at that angle. :)

Poor Van Ryn. Speedy recovery.

And for all the Blake anger, I want him to do well, I really do – but when he takes stupid penalties it’s just frustrating.

And could someone kick Mike Milbury in the head, please? He kept going on and on about the injury disclosure thing to the point that I wondered if he personally had been burned in a hockey pool. How would he know how long it takes for a pain killer to take effect and determine if a player is a game-time decision? And his talk about Crosby was just stupid – that a fan wants to know who is in the lineup before he buys a ticket. How is that any different than if a player plays hurt and leaves after two shifts, and then misses even more time? When it comes to playing with injuries, I think I trust Kelly Hrudey’s experience more than stupid Mike’s. The man is a dork, and he annoys me more and more each time he opens his ignorant trap.

Re: Blake

I want the guy to do well too. I just have a problem with the fact that he’s really done nothing to change his approach, when it’s been obvious for this season and all of last that it’s not working. He continues to launch 50 foot wristshots, he takes bad penalties, he takes extra-long shifts and of course, he celebrates like he scored an OT winner after scoring to make it 5-2.

He’s just frustrating as hell to watch, and given a choice, I would prefer not to watch him anymore.

Really? They are defending that? I nearly spat out my coffee when I saw him say “He turned at the last minute and I couldn’t stop”. I don’t think Kostopolis wanted to hurt Van Ryn (at least, I hope that wasn’t his plan) but Van Ryn was in front of him the whole time, with his face towards the boards, and for Kostopolis to say that he moved at the last minute doesn’t pass the sniff test.

He’s either evil (for lying and trying to get out of a suspension – which must happen or I’m gonna get stabby!) or he’s the dumbest person alive if he actually believes that statement. Grrr.

Kotsopolous is a quite the spin doctor

The replay (even at regular speed) shows that Van Ryn was going into his own zone to recover the puck at the boards. His back was to Kotsopoolous the whole time. “He turned at the last minute” is a bunch of BS beyond belief.

by HP on Nov 9, 2008 10:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly!

I know that sometimes guys do turn their backs at the last minute, but what he did to Van Ryn was smash a guy into the boards totally from behind. And if the discipline committee actually cares, they’ll suspend his ass.

I think what that comes from is the glance over his shoulder to see how closely he was being followed, and how much time he had to play the puck. Through the lens of fandom, they might perceive it as him checking how much time he had to duck down and draw a penalty, instead of judging how hard he might get hit because he was checking how close Kostopolous was to him.

I am paraphrasing a might, I can’t remember the exact words, but yes, that sums it up, and its not all the habitants there, just a couple even more wayward ones

Paraphrasing? Not all of them?

(Mabel takes a deep breath and calms down a tad)

I know it won’t be all of them, but I can’t abide it when people defend crappy moves by their team. You will never see me defend Hollweg and his stupid “I can see numbers! Hit now!” move, no matter that he wears my beloved jersey.

remember, Habs fans are the most dillusional people on the planet, I’d pity them ,but my hate is too strong

True. I hate them as much as I hate Sens fans. Maybe even more. No, just as much. I have a lot of hate to go around.

Varying degrees of hate.

That is so true. And the name of my punk rock band.

Good name. Now if we can just make his actual corpse a reality…

How is it that he is still allowed to ref? I hate him extremely much. And yes, when I figured out it was him, I shouted some very un-ladylike things.

true story, I used to put a picture of kerry fraser on my punching bag, but it would get ruined within the first 3 punches and it was a pain to keep changing them

Also

The Habs not liking Grabs very much elevates him in my eyes. An enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Call me, Grabs, we can do lunch and complain about all those losers. Or just hang out, whatever.
