Predict the Sundin Future

With word that Sundin will sign with either the Rangers or Canucks anyday/week/month/year now, I propose we predict the Sundin future.  Forget picking which team, or when he'll sign, I say we predict both how he'll produce, how his chosen team will do, and more importantly, how soon he'll pull a groin and not even contribute.

In honour of Coca-cola, who as we all know will never suffer another injury now that he's traded, I predict that Sundin will last 3 games before suffering a strain which will eventually go from day to day to such nagging proportions that the names Wellwood and Gaborik will be used to describe time missed.  The team Sundin signs with goes on to be eliminated in the first round, and Sundin doesn't even play one playoff minute.  He subsequently retires definitively (ha!), and fades into the sunset, with less than 3 lousy games taking away our beloved captain from retiring with us.

That's my prediction, what is all of yours?

Sundin
  • Signs with the Rangers
  • puts up huge numbers giving the Rangers tonnes of hope
  • gets past the first round but gets his wrist broken
  • misses the second round and the Rangers make it to the third
  • his return throws everyone off and they lose in the ECF

Oh, and he gets booed when he comes back to Toronto. The mob never really liked him to begin with.

I suppose

They lose to a shitty, no-way-they-can-beat-us team?

Yes

And Detroit wipes the floor with that team.

Wow

Lordosis, your prediction is the same as mine – he’s going to get hurt. The team he’s on will not have home ice advantage and will lose in the first round and Sundin won’t have contributed anything.

Just for fun, here’s my other prediction: Out of the blue, he signs with the Leafs and shocks everyone. Toronto makes an improbable run to the playoffs only to finish 1 point out. Sundin announces that he isn’t sure if he will play hockey again, he needs the summer to think it over, but probably he’ll make a decision by September (soft deadline only).

Signs with Vancouver.
Puts up so-so numbers, doesn’t make a huge contribution.
Luongo has injury problems all year.
Vancouver drops out of playoff contention.
Sundin accepts trade to NYR at deadline for a king’s ransom.
Leaf fans invade Sweden.

Sundin....
  • signs in New York
  • shuffles Drury to wing, costs Voros, Dawes and Korpikoski ice time
  • Rangers blue line depleted in roster moves to make room for Mats
  • Rangers end up nose diving in standings due to chemistry problems
  • Miss playoffs by one point, behind the Leafs who are empowered by Ian White’s unstoppable moustache, Blake’s new lease on life and the Selke winning play of their new captain, Niklas Hagman. Oh, and this new guy Kovalchuk who plays wing with Antro and Poni forming the new Russian Bloc line. Leaf fans miss Kabby and Toskala, but the trip to the minors for Stralman gave the kid the ice time to get things right, and Pogge, well after his call up in January, Toskala was expendable, but his great play through December and January skyrocketed his value, making the Kovalchuk deal workable for Atlanta.

As a side note, Rick Nash has stated emphatically to Columbus that his last season will be the 09-10 season for the Bluejackets. After which, traded wherever, he will sign in Toronto as a free agent, gladly accepting ahome town discount and the privilege to play with Nik Hagman and Mikhal Grabovski.

THE END

Rangers, groin problem, Sundin plays well but it doesn’t matter. Something else goes wrong.

Leaf, the universe and everything.

Signs in NY and plays well, but the rangers suck. Accepts trade at the deadline to Toronto for Pogge, Strallman and a 1st. Signs 4 year 32 million extension. At the deadline also Kules in traded for Darcy Tucker to bring in ‘veteran leadership’ for the playoff run. Leafs miss playoffs. Cliff Fletcher discovers the Real Brian Burke handcuffed to the toilet in JFJ’s basement. Riots erupt. Schenn tries to calm everyone down, begging for forgiveness for JFJ, claiming that he didn’t really know what he was doing. It doesn’t work. Toronto burns. The devil rules the earth for 2000 years, and the Leafs remain cupless. Shucks.

Really?

I woulda thought in jail they’d play McGuire and Kypreos 24/7. Or is that too inhumane?

Sundin signs with NYR.

Has a hot start before cooling down as the year goes on. A few injuries here and there, nothing serious.

Has a reasonably good season – a little under a point-a-game, basically what he was in Toronto all those years.

Is OK in the playoffs, but the Rangers don’t win the Cup.

Takes an unfair amount of blame for the playoff exit.

Goes back to Sweden, feeling sour about the whole experience and wishing he’d just retired during the summer when he wanted to instead of being talked into a comeback he wasn’t really sold on.

Down Goes Brown - Unapologetically nostalgic for the past. Brutally realistic about the present. Grudgingly optimistic about the future.
