Oh pulez
which way to go… sympathy, or more put-downs???
Like that was ever in question, I know you well enough to know that :P
And Wall-E is one of like… 3 movies in total that has ever made me almost-cry in my entire life

actually
I did seriously debate that.
Which were the other movies?
by Karina on Dec 17, 2008 3:42 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I believe
they were Back to the Future Part 3 when the DeLorean got destroyed and maybe Schindler’s List… no wait scratch that, it was Lord of the Rings Return of the King when King Theoden gives his speech before they charged the orcs… I shed a tear for that scene

that was a really good scene
I also do not like Back to the Future.
Schindlers list should make everyone cry.
by Karina on Dec 17, 2008 4:03 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It made me
feel awful about myself as a human being but I did not cry no
Back to the Future is chalk full of awesome, I used to watch the entire trilogy every Saturday no matter what until it get to the point where I could single-handedly re-enact the whole movie by myself line for line
I even spent a month building a DeLorean out of legos including the wheels that rotate down when in flight mode… precious memories…

I can see you not caring about the characters in Wall-E, now that I think about it I just realized that I have a tendency to develop emotional bonds/attachments to electronics… I know that makes me weird… and crazy…

i have not seen Schindler's List
for the express reason that I have no desire to sit in a chair for 2 hours so that a film can make me feel like a piece of crap…
i’m sure it’s an incredible movie, but watching it will not change what has happened, nor lessen my resolve to never see it happen again. Good for you , those who did watch it tho…

She’s currently unemployed but she’s a french and music teacher… she has been complaining that she has nothing to do at home because of her employment status, maybe I’ll get her a PS3 to keep her entertained… not a bad idea actually.

Batteries are a big no.
A music nut – get her an MP3 player and load on a bunch of her favourite songs.
If she’s a reader – how about a first edition of one of her favourite books (I scored huge by getting my wife a whole pile of Trixie Belden books in the same editions that she read when she was a little girl)
Why not figure out an old school board game that the two of you could play together – Scrabble, risk, etc.
Are there any great French films you could get her on DVD? Criterion has a beautiful Truffault collection.

I think, crazy jewelery purchases aside, that set of Trixie Belden books is the best gift I ever got my wife.
She loved those books as a kid and I happend upon a used stash (volume 1 to 8) that even had the end-papers just as she had described them (50s style line drawings of all the characters).
It was a big win.

Muse’s “Hysteria”…according to google, lyrics as follows…
it’s bugging me, grueling me
and twisting me around
yeah I’m endlessly caving in
and turning inside out
‘cause I want it now
I want it now
give me your heart and your soul
and I’m breaking out
I’m breaking out
last chance to lose control
yeah it’s holding me, morphing me
and forcing me to strive
to be endlessly cold within
and dreaming I’m alive
‘cause I want it now
I want it now
give me your heart and your soul
I’m not breaking down
I’m breaking out
last chance to lose control
and I want you now
I want you now
I feel my heart implode
and I’m breaking out
escaping now
feeling my faith erode

Current favorite songs are PDA and Any Way You Want It. Also downloaded the No Doubt pack at the wife’s insistence.. Anything to get her into playing is cool!

Agreed
PDA is great and lotsa fun
I also downloaded Sanctuary, that song carved its own niche in my heart ever since I heard it in Gran Turismo 3

Wow they have that for rock band? God damn I need to get that one.
True story: I was on the rock band site and requested they add “Jesus Christ Pose” by Soundgarden and it was one of the ones that came out the next week. I like to think it was because of me.
Also: it’s frigging hard :(

PDA is really fun on expert bass because it’s not too hard but challenging enough that you can get a sense of accomplishment. Plus it’s a solid, driving bassline and I like that kind of thing. Same with the Journey tune, plus Journey rocks.

this was...
up in the mountains near where i live.
i was over 7K up, and we had to drive two hours to get medical attention, an hour of which was in snow tires down winding mountains roads…
anyhoo, the worst part of the entire thing was my daughter was riding on my lap, she got thrown (thankfully) before I hit the rocks. she was shaken up, but no injuries…my first question was whether or not she’s alright, and i heard her cry (good sign, she’s conscious) and my wife said she thought so, to which i replied “I’m gonna throw up” and promptly did

Mabel - have you read this?
It’s a really interesting review of Twilight through the lens of the author’s personal fixation on young adult fiction when she was a teen. I quite enjoyed the piece and Mrs.MF37 did too.
I was such a book lovin’ fool when I was a kid and the Trixie Belden reference reminded me of this piece. Thought you might dig it too.

it's a newer book...
but as someone who appears to be an avid reader, i thought you might have picked it up. supposed to be very technical.
the guy that wrote it is a part of the team that runs BoingBoing.net. So most everything i’ve read about it is through that site, or sites they’ve linked to. the premise sounded interesting enough…here’s the Amazon description:
"Marcus, a.k.a "w1n5t0n," is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works–and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school’s intrusive but clumsy surveillance systems.
But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison where they’re mercilessly interrogated for days.
When the DHS finally releases them, Marcus discovers that his city has become a police state where every citizen is treated like a potential terrorist. He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him only one option: to take down the DHS himself."

who are curious to know, I will be in Kitchener tomorrow, this is in no way a response to anyone in particular or their questions, just stating a fact

Dammit
Working away, with the shuffle mode engaged on the headphones and Bon Iver’s re: Stacks comes on and everything just stops. What a great tune.

hmmm...
not what i’d listen to for work, but a pleasant song.
i can see myself curled up on the couch with a big vat of coffee and the fireplace going. that’s the mood it seems to evoke in me…
i’m going to listen to some more when i get home, never heard of him before…

Yeah his album is excellent. Very quiet, reserved.. Just him and a guitar for the most part.

The album is For Emma, Forever Ago and it’s been on a tonne of “best of 2008” lists so far. Really recommend it..
But yeah, not really one for work listening since it’s a little down-ish. Not emo!

oooh
that title is very familiar, i think someone recommended it to me already… I’ll see if I can pick it up tonight (or just get it from iTunes).

I think it’s on iTunes plus, which is even better! (no DRM)

yeah
on Friday, just for the weekend. The snow is expected to stop tonight, and not resume till Sunday when we should happily be on our way home.

haha
yeah well I’ve been dying to go somewhere for ages now… so the hubby said that if I could find a deal to whistler, we’d go. I’ve only been on day trips, and he really loves it up there, so it’ll be sweet! Plus, the hotel has a spa and hot tubs…

nice...
my wife is very frugal, so we stayed in a Motel 6 in Tahoe, but still, it was very sweet of her to whisk me away for the weekend rather than the other way around.
the problem is with a little one and two dogs, taking off anywhere at the drop of a hat is relatively impossible…

that's so true
you need a good babysitter for that. I used to do that for my brother and his wife whenever they wanted go to away, or just have date night or whatever… I don’ tknow that they’ve found a new babysitter for those things at all. Occasionally they get so desperate they use my parents…

oh god
Sundin needs to make a decision soon…. the Vancouver media is now spewing how appropriate it would be for him to sign after they retire Linden’s number… how he could become the great player on the team that Linden once was… bleck!
by Karina on Dec 17, 2008 6:43 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Really Linden to Canucks fans is what Clark is to Leaf fans.. cept for the non-fighting part..
I always considered him to be a classy player who I could never really dislike.
by LeafFanInVan on Dec 17, 2008 6:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I like Linden
but I’m sorry, you can’t compare him and Sundin.
by Karina on Dec 17, 2008 6:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah Linden hasn’t been a great player for quite some time.. Even in his heyday he was no sundin.. Vancouver sports media for ya, right there.
