In all of this craziness, I have basically become numb to it all. To me, Mats was/is great, and while I wish him no harm, I also wish him no rewards. He now is like any other NHLer wearing a jersey that doesn't have a Maple Leaf on the front (save for those asshats I truly do hate....I'm looking at you Alfredsson).
With that being said, I do find myself wishing he (and Kaberle, but whatever) had waived his NTC at the deadline so we could have grabbed Grabby, Higgins and a 1st. But then I got thinking, that's all well and great, but if he HAD went to Montreal, what then? What if they won? What if OUR LEADER pushed those terrible assholes in bleu blanche et rouge over the top? Besides the fact the ensuing riot would have no doubt consumed me, I don't think I'd ever get over that our beloved Leaf leader helped the enemy win.
Therefore, I am content that Mats didn't waive, and only wish the soap opera that followed didn't occur. Too bad in all of this that he didn't just retire at the end of the season (a perfect ending in my opinion) or accept a trade to a team I don't hate with every passing second.
