Puck Daddy: Winners and loser
Puck Daddy does a roundup of the winners and losers and mentions my bitter postmortem. I should start sending out my requested link text. I thought it was more of a frank assessment than bitter. Either way, Fredo is no more!
p.s. check out the tag. How heartbreaking is that?

you know
he makes a good point about the regular season. The more veteran players pull this half-season crap, the more unimportant the regular season looks, and the more tempting it becomes for players of a certain age and ability to want to sit out training camps and the first few months. Maybe the NHL should look at a deadline for UFAs to sign contracts before they have to sit out the remainder of the season. Otherwise one day we might wind up with a league full of AHLers until the playoff race starts to heat up each season. This shit will just get worse…

Definitely
They have similar provisions for players moving across from Europe so it makes sense to have them for older players.

I don't think
something like November 15 as a date, or the 15th game of the season, as a benchmark, would be unreasonable to expect a player to either sign or take the year off.

is that something...
…that would have to be collectively bargained? Or would the league have the authority to impose a deadline like that on teams, thus cutting the PA out of the equation?

I would guess that it would have to be a collectively bargained decision.
