Avery baits Phaneuf
The soap opera that is Avery continues! Hilarious stuff.
Phaneuf didn't seem too perturbed, but will hopefully crush him regardless.

Avery
I hope Phaneuf dummies him. Of course, Elisha could solve the problem by coming out and calling Dion the biggest/best she’s had.

Yeah, I don’t have love for Phaneuf, but he gets the “at least he’s not freaking Avery” pass. For now. He keeps it up, and he’ll be 1A, and then he’ll get a taste of my Avery hate.

I think it's complete BS that Avery got suspended
The NHL is suspending him because he said something that reflects badly on the league. But seriously, he’s just being honest. Phaneuf does have his sloppy seconds. If the league has a problem with Avery saying that, maybe they should institute a rule against Elisha sleeping around the league!
Let Avery keep being Avery before the rest of the sporting world gets bored with the NHL.

and
there’s so much worse that’s been done on the ice and gone unpunished. Besides, is it merely that he said this in front of cameras and microphones? ‘Cause on the ice, the players say this kinda stuff, and worse I’m sure (I’m still dying to know what White said to Kovalchuk to make him turn around at center ice and charge him).

The problem with letting Avery say what he wants is that he is the shitheaded only child that never got disciplined by his parents and always had to push the envelope to see how far he could get before getting smacked down.

Beautifully said. He keeps trying to see how far he can go without being punished, and while you don’t want to encourage him, you want him to smarten up.

Better still..
The league could have suspended the instigator rule for one game only, and made turtling a penalty.
I’m sad that I won’t get to see any possible highlights of Phaneuf absolutely stapling Avery, but in reality Avery is probably too shifty to allow that to happen anyway.

like Oprah on a baked ham.
And yes, it would be nice, but he is turtley and shifty enough to avoid it. He always does. Which is reason #3,254 that I dislike him. Man up!

I think it's kinda important to note
That the media is getting on Avery for making a misogynistic comment, but at least four ladies here (me, LD, Karina and Mabel) aren’t offended!
Bobby Mac on TSN was all over Avery about demeaning women. Come on!

I'd get offended
but it is Avery, and he’s a lameass, no account douchebag, so I pay his words no mind.
In general, however, I’m not crazy about the concept of women being referred to as some sort of property. It gets my ire up.

I know it can, but in practice? It mostly refers to women. And especially when it comes to sports, I’m sensitive about the whole macho, slightly misogynist slant everything takes. So I’m not thrilled about it. Also? It’s just tacky.
And please, apparently, according to something Karina found, Avery is hooking up with Calvin Klein’s ex, so he’d best shut his mouth about the whole ‘sloppy seconds’ thing.

He’s not referring to himself as Cuthbert’s sloppy seconds though. Is that because he’s a man and she’s a woman or because Sean is the only one who matters in Sean’s world? It’s probably actually because he’ll say anything to try and get an opponent off his game. Hopefully he gets his eventually though. What I wouldn’t give to get my hands on a time machine and put Wendel on the ice with that punk.

Exactly, that’s my point.
She’s someone’s sloppy seconds, and he, for whatever reason, isn’t. And yeah, I know that we tend to view our exes as the damaged goods from the relationship, but alls I’m saying is don’t be spending your time in a glass house while you’re throwing stones. Y’know?
And I know he’s just trying to be all douchey, but we get it. You’re a douche, Avery. Stop trying to prove it.

Avery’s a clown. His arm waving crap in the playoffs was ridiculous and I was especially annoyed that one of my all time favourite non-Leafs, Brendan Shanahan, was obliged to tarnish himself by standing up for him. The kind of anything goes to get under your opponents skin attitude that Avery’s got has always pissed me off. Effective or not it’s hard to be proud of your team when you have a guy like that constantly douching off (cough Tucker).
On a side note, it appears to be The Globe & Mails policy to disable online comments for any article that mentions Sean Avery.

I remember Shanny being interviewed in the locker room after the Tucker/Blake/Cancer shenanigans. He was saying the teammate stuff to stick up for him, but you could tell by his posture and his eyes that he was completely disgusted by it too. Minimal tarnish on Shanny in my eyes, just made me dislike Avery all the more for bringing Shanny down with him.

You’re right. I hated to see it but I guess it just shows that Shanahan has his teammates back no matter what. I loved when Shanny was a player rep with the Blues and he invited Bettman outside to repeat some disparaging comments he’d made about St. Louis. That’s the kind of guy you want on your team.

Avery may be a douche but...
His “antics” got him on the front page of ESPN. As much as Avery’s a punk, he’s absolutely right that he’s playing the “villain” card and drumming up interest for the NHL. Is is good interest? That’s arguable, but it’s also not about some player going off and swinging a stick at someone’s head, for example. An indefinite suspension is rather harsh, and I suspect that the Stars strongly endorsed this suspension. After all, Steve Ott can be a douchebag all by himself.

I don't like this suspension
Because it reflects how inconsistent the league is with disciplining its players and seems to hand out punishment based on a wheel-of-fortune style of random decision making process.
Misogynistic comments by a player in public? Okay that’s bad, I can get that but suspended indefinitely until the league has had a “chat” with the player? I’m confused. A player gets indefinite suspension for making a misogynistic comment but say… only 2 games for nearly decapitating another player with a deliberate hit late to the head?
This doesn’t jive with me. It never ceases to amaze me how far up their asses Bettman and Campbell have their heads.

Well, that’s exactly it though. Players shouldn’t go around talking about other player wives, girlfriends, daughters, sisters, mothers, etc. Personal life and family is off limits and has nothing to do with hockey. If a player wants to open up and discuss his own life in the spotlight, that’s his option, but nobody should have their personal life thrust into the media by another player, especially not in such a crude, smart-ass fashion.
I’d be okay with a 10-game suspension. He crossed the line. Seriously, it’s not like Avery was encouraged into crossing the line and made a mistake in the heat of the moment – he took a running leap over the line, with his pants around his ankles. He’s an idiot. Screw him. Everything he gets he deserves and then some.

I am not defending his actions
he’s a douchebag, and doesn’t appreciate that he plays the sacred game of hockey for a living.
But the suspension makes no sense in light of how other actions are not disciplined, which have just as negative an effect on the image of hockey as this. That’s why I question a suspension at all – it seems disproportionate with the discipline being given for head shots, and deliberate injuries. I just was struck by it because Hollweg deserves to have been suspended much longer for his hits from behind than he was, while Avery gets a suspension of indeterminate length for being an asshole?
Maybe I won’t mind it at all once the term is worked out, but it seems overboard to me.

Agreed
I have nothing against a suspension, but I get confused when someone gets suspended for 10 games for insulting his ex in public when they get only 2 games for trying to take another player’s head off.

Just because the league does not administer justice properly in other areas does not preclude them from dishing it out in other cases.
A parallel: just because the US government has allowed numerous crooks to keep their jobs, their ill-gotten gains, and their freedom during the financial crisis does not mean that they can’t send someone to jail for murder.

They need to start working on this inconsistent-disciplining issue, and this is just a blatant example as to how bad the problem is.

Yes, it is the point that some people (more over at Mirtle’s) have made:
But the suspension makes no sense in light of how other actions are not disciplined, which have just as negative an effect on the image of hockey as this. That’s why I question a suspension at all – it seems disproportionate with the discipline being given for head shots, and deliberate injuries.
That is what the above is trying to say. The two actions are in no way related in terms of the suspension to Avery.

The reason this is a big deal
to the NHL head office is that it looks really terrible when sports channels that rarely play hockey highlights (hello, espn!) pick up on this and rebroadcast it.
It makes the sport look bad, much moreso than a questionable check from behind because the non-hockey layperson might not know a dangerous hit/check when they see it, but they sure as hell know a classless knob who would bash his ex in the media.
Personally I hope he’s gone from the league, not just because of this, but because it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Enough of his stupid crap! Go play in russia where they can’t understand what comes out of your pie-hole!
