Effing deadlines man
I hate this one Project Manager, he gives me the approval to proceed with data-processing for a job that has to be done before the Christmas break starts since I won’t be back till Jan 12th, so now I’m like cramming it in trying to get it done when he could have given me approval 2 weeks ago to do it when I had no work… wtf

Well, giving you approval to do it when you had time to do it would have been an effective use of resources, and we can’t have that.
How've I been? In a word? Awesome. In five? Awesome and full of booze.
by Mabel on Dec 22, 2008 11:17 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
His reasoning was
The client hadn’t given budget approval, but that is irrelevant, the data processing has to be done no matter what, the only way the client won’t give budget approval is if the data collection was done incorrectly and the only way you can tell that is if the data has been processed!!! So it must be done no matter what, I could’ve just charged my time to another project and swapped it around later after the approval was given but noooooooooo.
It is just absolute nonsense.

oh goodness
it’s like a requirement.
I had lunch with a bunch of the women from my old office and was told that the biggest new project that they landed in Airports has been given to the project manager who is most of the reason I left. He couldn’t manage a washroom renovation that I was on with him, anything larger he ever did was on the most rediculous schedule and ended up making me work 10 hr days to try and get stuff done. And now they’ve given him the biggest, most complex project.
Thank goodness I left.

To be fair
There are only 2 PMs in my group out of about a dozen that I can’t stand, the other ones are very workable and easy-going.
This one is just annoyingly scattered-brained and has a tendency to CC everyone in his emails including all the higher ups that aren’t involved in a particular project…

i’m a huge music snob, even back then, but my best friend is the one who turned me onto these guys.
he put the disc on (i think it was a disc, could have been a tape though) and we sat in his room listening to it in it’s entirety. then, we sat there and talked about each song.
then, “Endless Namelss” came on, and he didn’t know it was there, so it was like a little easter egg bonus…
anyhoo, amazing album. still, “smells like teen spirit” is still played out for me. i tried listening to it, and it was by far my least favorite track the other day…

is the Phil Spector of our time…his work as a producer and engineer had as much of an effect on popular music as the musicians he worked with.
here’s my little blurb on Nevermind. I was writing about my top ten albums of all time. sort of a challenege put to me by my buddy at unboundedexistence.com

Tearing Down the Wall of Sound was one of the best books I read this year. I didn’t know much about Phil Spector and it was a fascinating bio.

just love his sound.
i try to emulate it when i mix my music, but it’s difficult to replicate in stereo. the mono thing really worked for him…

here it is...
the challenge wasn’t best of all time, but most personally influential. and then why it was so. all of these i still listen to, but there are other bands/albums i probably listen to more regularly or like better. but for influence on who i am now and what i listen to, these are the main offenders

Interesting List
Motley Crue strikes me as a bit of an outlier, possibly because it’s the only album on the last I’m not all that familiar with.
If you were to re-do the top 10 now, how many would change?

well...
i imagine some could be exchanged for others. but in the grand scheme of how they influenced me, i think it’s a fairly concrete list.
some of my buddies here in CA get together and we make mix CD’s that represent the soundtrack to the movie of our lives. those are constantly changing…
that Cure album has a funny story behind it. i did a write up for each album individually after my initial list. long story short, i bought that tape at a Bi-Way in Bowmanville because i knew my brother liked them, and he had Shout at the Devil on vinyl. i don’t recall how old i was, but i do recall seeing the name Motely Crue and just assumed it was Shout at the Devil. Quite the surprise when i played it at home…

I wouldn’t call Orchid “screamo” but we don’t need to have a genre argument.
Gatefold as an entire album is amazing, it’s too bad it’s hard to listen to if you’re not a fan of the genre, since there’s a depth and subtlety to it that most people will never bother with.

My problem with genres for punk and hardcore is that they’re co-opted so easily by pop-punk bands trying to cash in on some new fad.

I just don’t like the association. It’s awkward to say something like “Sure I like screamo” and have someone start talking about My Chemical Romance.
There’s no way to exit that conversation without being a douchebag, ie. “I hate your crappy pop music” or “Allow me to explain to you what real music is”.

i think it’s an opportunity to open up someones music repertoire. i take the opposite approach though. i can listen to MCR, and then tell people, you might like bands like Brand New (chances are they already do…) or Motion City Soundtrack, or Chiodos…depends on why they like MCR to begin with…

Top 10 Influential
Likely to change tomorrow…(and listed alphabetically as I’m trying to do this quickly)
Beatles – Let it Be (really, it would be the red or the blue album, but that seems like cheating)
Lambchop – Nixon
Pixies – Doolittle
R.e.m. – Reckoning
Replacements – Pleased to Meet Me
Silver Jews – American Water
Smiths – Hatful of Hollow
Townes Van Zandt – Road Songs
M. Ward – End of Amnesia
Wilco – Being There
This is just way too tough, every time I get set to hit “post” I start to re-create the liast as I’m missing way too many…(Nebraska; Kiss Alive; 1984; Blood and Chocolates; London Calling; Outlandos D’Amour; etc.)

A bunch of my friends do something similar – each Christmas we exchange a cd of the music we listened to that year.
About ten years ago, we’d stick to just music released that year, but now that I’m down to one, maybe two new releases a year, that apporach doesn’t work so well anymore.
I’m actually about to head out the door to buy a spindle of cd-roms so that I can start burning copies for all my pals…not sure how the mono recording of Paul Newman singing Plastic Jesus is going to go over, but I felt I had to throw something on the cd as Cool Hand Luke is one of my favourite movies…

A friend of mine from the UK calls fake breasts “party tits.”
I was really hoping that expression would catch on over here, but I’ve yet to encouter it and get rather odd looks when I try to use it. Maybe I should go with the fake cockney accent next time…

they also have an economic specialist who thinks that given the Economic situation, the Canucks won’t use up their cap space for another player at the deadline because he doesn’t think they would want to spend that much money.

they'll spend it all
they make wads of cash.
They have to go for it this year. 13 Free Agents this summer, plus Luongo’s last season is next season. Schneider’s sitting in the wings….
I think they go for it this year, if it doesn’t work, blow it up, trade Luongo at next year’s deadline, and rebuild around Cody Hodgson and Cory Schneider. It’d been a perfect plan if they still had Bourdon.

i think Gillis is actually a little more in tune with how to run a team than he’s given credit for.
i don’t see them as a contendor, still, stranger things have happened in the playoffs, and i’m fairly certain they could make top 4. from there, who knows? If SJ and the wings get surprised by someone in the first or second round, the Nucks could go all the way…
and, as you stated, so many UFAs and a top level goaltending prospect in the wings…it’s now or never.

but think of the prospects you could get in return for Luongo.
I’m pretty impressed with Gillis, actually. I think he has patience and the trust of the owners, who have a ton of money. He’s made some shrewd moves this year, such as picking up Shane O’Brien who is much better that Kraijcek, and has shown flashes of getting better.
But I’d still rather have Burke.

Luongo is probably the premier asset in the NHL right now. You could get damned near anything for him. I honeslty believe he’d fetch more than Crosby on the open market

as the GM and owner(s) would be looking at more than pure skill, or even positional importance. From a marketing perspective, Crosby, hands down.

And all-terrain tires are awesome. I love drivin’ in snow tho. Especially when you do a turn just right and rotate the truck just thru the gas..
Really the reason 99% of idiots get into trouble on snow in decent SUVs is cause they’re just goin to goddamn fast! Plus they suck at physics.

poor driving
is the main reason, I used to fly through snow and ice in my old grand am and not have any issues until the snow was higher than the bumper, flying past people in Jeeps who were stuck because they were morons.
Now that I got the SUV, i am nigh on unstopable

The difference is I know how to drive like that and can get out of it at will (most of the time)

Truth be told
I only got on Facebook in April of 2007 right before I finished Uni. My housemate had been bugging me for 2 years to get on it but I refused… I ended up opening an account since I figured I won’t be able to anymore once I graduate and was done school (it was open to university/college students only at the time).

I signed up, found a bunch of high school and college people then totally forgot about it. After seeing a few news items on facebook’s rather lax privacy standards (and the fact that any images or text you put on there become their property) caused me to delete my account..
That and all the “so and so has sent you a present! Install new app?” requests got really, really annoying.

I’d hate to think what was in that stuff to keep it, ahem, fresh.
