The kitcheny arts are not my forte.

Now painting, crocheting, and beading jewelry – that I can do. In fact, I just finished a drawstring purse in blue and white because I wanted to see what it looked like. :)

Impressive. I can operate a crock pot and a microwave, but anything more complicated than a cake I can mix in one bowl and dump in one pan, or cookie bars, makes my head hurt.

rare to find someone that can do savory and sweet. I can cook and I can make bread, but I’m not great at desserts.

I only took up baking a few years ago. But I’ve been a good cook for ages, which means that I’m the only one in my generation that gets roped into working in the kitchen for big family events. I guess I got my mom’s cooking skills and my dad’s baking abilities.

My mum is well meaning but typically British – carrots get boiled for an hour; poultry gets cooked for a day; nothing gets seasoned. Unless it’s Irish soda bread or roast lamb, it’s pretty dreadful stuff.

I actually took cooking courses at George Brown to get away from that world, but I don’t get the same enjoyment out of baking that I do from cooking.

I really love to do both. I love everything about them – finding the recipes, figuring out something totally perfect, and then executing. That’s what I do for people’s birthdays now – appetizers, dinner and dessert. I think I’m a better cook than my mom is now, and I’m slowly gaining on my dad.

I pick my food based on what takes the least time to fuss with and makes the fewest dishes. You can subsist a surprisingly long time on granola bars and diet Mountain Dew, actually.

Do you ever read Michael Ruhlman’s blog? He’s written a number of great cookbooks with culinary giants like Thomas Keller and Eric Ripert.

He also wrote two great books about the inside of the Culinary Institute of America, the second one features a very young Michael Symon who’s now the latest Iron Chef.

Really worth checking out – his CIA books were total page turners for me.

Because the team is so horrid and if they don’t move him soon – and get a good return, too – next year will be even more of a circus. The team is a mess and has not been able to build around a talent they have had for years and years.

I like Kovalchuck a ton. I just want him to play on a team that has a chance to be good and lets him show his stuff in the playoffs. He’d be awesome.
