Continuation from mf37's point

Just as all the talk about trading Toskala is a non-starter, Kaberle’s value is dropping faster than the TSE right now. No way Kabby is traded before the deadline.

I think the question we need to be asking isn’t how long should Kabs sit, it’s what do the Leafs have to do to optimize his value.

Or maybe it’s how could a movie with a lesbian sub-plot involving Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson be so bad?

Believe it or not, I never played organized hockey as a kid. Took power skating and played tons of street and pond hockey.

My first year of hockey was when I was 16 or 17 and I joined a full-contact men’s league. I learned very quickly. Played through university and have been on assorted men’s teams ever since…I think that’s why I’m so crazy for the game – I didn’t have the love of hockey crushed out of me at an early age.

But Kaberle didn’t waive because he assumed the other guys would stick around. Now there isn’t any guarantees Kaberle would do the same, but he might just be too disenfranchised to stick around anymore.

I really think he’s coiling severely at this role of leadership. More responsibility, as in default star player = Kaberle not in the background.

Super, so not only do the Leafs not get Carter for Kaberle, they don’t get Kaberle for Kaberle.

Honestly without Kaberle’s puck moving Toronto’s defense starts to look plodding and slow without having guys who can throw big hits, ie. really shitty. Not that keeping Kaberle matters if he plays like he’s played the past month and a half.

Well, after hearing Wilson say that, I’m less confident that the coaches even want to deal with him right now. Kaberle, like Marleau before him, is not a type of player that seems like he responds favourably to Wilson’s tactics. I think his struggles right now are exacerbated by Wilson.

I like Andy Frost and respect his opinions but did he just say that the Leafs will probably get “a position player and a decent prospect (or draft pick)” – what the hell? I know fans overvalue their own players but that’s the worst possible return imo.

by WildWolfdog on Dec 4, 2008 11:59 PM EST reply actions

For who?

If he’s referring to Kaberle, the way he’s playing lately, the Leafs would be lucky to get a package like that right now.

by bkblades on Dec 5, 2008 12:01 AM EST up reply actions

Come on, that’s just a reactionary statement. He’s had a couple of bad games but only a few days ago Leaf fans were salivating about what Kaberle’s return could be. He’s going to net more than a positional player and a decent pick.

by WildWolfdog on Dec 5, 2008 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

Well, if this was one game, true enough. But this has been a disturbing trend with Kaberle so far this season. You can’t tell me that Kaberle is at his highest trade value right now.

by bkblades on Dec 5, 2008 12:05 AM EST up reply actions

No I agree, he hasn’t been playing as well but I hope GM’s in the NHL don’t assess players based on 25 games and disregarding 6 or 7 years of career stats.

The fact that Raycroft got a contract suggests GMs don’t look at the past 100 games.

Wilson is nothing, if not direct. But he’s walking a fine line by calling out his players like this willy nilly.

by bkblades on Dec 5, 2008 12:06 AM EST up reply actions

you send him to the press box, you don’t embarrass him and have him sit on the bench freezing his czech ass off thinking about his future, and how he’s going to have to sell his house, and tell his wife to start packing.

fuckin bullshit

I guess Kaberle’s play was his way of telling him off. Or at least, it seems like a theory for his bad play, right? Right?

by bkblades on Dec 5, 2008 12:18 AM EST up reply actions

If Kaberle gets traded within a couple days can we safely assume that every time Wilson calls out a player he’s a goner?

by WildWolfdog on Dec 5, 2008 12:07 AM EST reply actions

Not necessarily – White responded pretty well from his press box time. Blake has had his ups and downs. One could argue Stajan’s had a career year coming off some early season press box time.

Lol I was talking about Cola and Steen getting traded within days of the call out.

Grabovski still around?

Make sure he hasn’t found an alternative route from Phoenix to your next location, guys.

Unlike the Habs PP, Grabovski has yet to disappear.

Lol habs need to let it go. They have worse luck than the Leafs when they ride a player out of town. Grabs, Ribeiro, Ryder?

by WildWolfdog on Dec 5, 2008 12:10 AM EST up reply actions

That’s usually what happens when you have good players to begin with. ;)

No, seriously, make sure Grabovski finds his way to the team plane. Who knows what he likes to do in Phoenix that makes him lose his sense of direction.

Don't forget...

..the best one of all – John Leclair. Dude was wicked good on that Legion of Doom Line for a while and – just to drive the knife a little deeper – was absolutely awesome every time the Flyers rolled into Montreal. I loved that man for making Habs fans continuously eat their livers. Five straight 40 goal plus seasons, something like 350 goals scored after leaving the Habs.

Leafs need to keep Kaberle until the trade deadline to get the best possible deal in a bidding war.

by WildWolfdog on Dec 5, 2008 12:22 AM EST reply actions

I agree with the current caller, Kaberle just isn’t competing right now – or that’s how it seems.

by WildWolfdog on Dec 5, 2008 12:23 AM EST up reply actions

I think that’s what most of us are advocating. Though it looks pretty likely now, Kaberle still needs to waive his no trade before this goes anywhere.

by bkblades on Dec 5, 2008 12:23 AM EST up reply actions

I’m pretty sure he said something along the lines of how he would’ve waived his NTC last year if he knew how it was going to turn out? Something like that.

I think he’ll waive this time around.
