They Always Come Back

Underprivileged kids throughout the GTA are celebrating right now as the greatest friend the Boys and Girls Club ever had, Curtis Joseph, is returning to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Whether they left through trade, free agency, or were denied through fickle fate, they always end up coming back to the Leafs. On the ice or in the office they want to be a part of it again. CuJo is the latest of these signing a 1 year deal. The terms are so far undisclosed, but will surely be no more than $750,000.

Cujo will bring experience, dependability and a 41 year-old body to the Leafs. I know some people were saying that Justin Pogge should be called to back up Toskala, but now that Scott Clemmensen is gone, Justin will get the net to himself for a full season with the Marlies. Taking a lot of time is better with Pogge as his development is incredibly important to the Leafs organization. CuJo played well for Calgary backing up Kiprusoff playing in 9 games (not far off the projected 15 he'll play for the Leafs) for a .906 PCT.

TSN reporting on Sundin:

The threat of retirement is not standing in the way of NHL teams taking a hard run at free agent forward Mats Sundin.

Sources tell TSN as many as four teams have tablde offers for the 37 year old, including one undisclosed team that has offered a whopping $10 million per year on a multi-year contract.

Sundin, who remains in Sweden is said to considering all of his options, but has yet to decided whether or not he play next season.

Well, so much for my one-year $10M offer brainstorm.

Hard to turn down 10 million - he can’t have been expecting that, even if he was just stalling to get to July 1. Though I’m not sure we’ll ever know now - 10 million would sure make me a lot more decisive, anyway.

OK, so I give up. Who’s Jeff Finger and why are we paying him $3.5M a year?

Finger

I think it’s 4 years at 3.5 total.

At least, it better be.

Check that

It is 3.5 per. My apologies.

What the hell?

This has to be a run at the salary floor.

So it’ s kind of like trading Tucker and Raycroft for to Colorado for Finger, only in a very round about and expensive way.

by rob m. on Jul 1, 2008 4:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Finger made $475,000 last year, didn’t do anything notable, and now makes 82% of Tomas Kaberle’s salary.

$3.5m per season better be a TSN typo.

no...

Really wanted to see him in Pittsburgh. Was hoping he’d stay in the Eastern Conference too, so we could see him a few times in Toronto. He’ll make a nice line combination with Ryan Smyth.

The rumor is Fletcher is trying to move Pavel Kubina for salary relief.

We just fucking paid Jeff “Who the fuck is this guy” Finger $3.5m a season and now we’re going to move probably our best remaining player for nothing? Toronto better get a fuckload of draft picks or young kids for Kubina, but this reeks of the Tucker buyout: Fletcher punishing people for their NMCs.

Mother of god

I thought it was bad with just me not hearing about this dude. Atleast I could chalk that up to arrogant ignorance. But now??

WHO THE FUCK IS JEFF FINGER??

I just touched base with some Avs fans, and yeah, we just got hosed.

Mark my words: Jeff Finger will get bought out next summer.

And

Then we’ll sign him back, since we seem to be signing Toronto’s buyouts

The Leafs need a d-man who knows how to hit, but $3.5m for a d-man who hits? Ugh.

At least we don’t have to worry about him disappearing in the playoffs.

Bright side

With names like Bell and Finger on the team (and of course Shenn) I am going to have lots of fun writing stupid Sun-esque titles all year.

I just posted a scouting report from an Avs blogger over at DGB. It made me feel a little bit better, your mileage may vary.

No it really doesn’t. Finger is a crappier more expensive Hal Gill for longer.
