TGiFTB Edition
Welcome to the Friday edition of Pension Plan Puppets. PPP is on day 112 of his vacation and rather than coming up with recycled content for my bitter leaf blog, I'm doing guest hosting duties over here.
The good news is: not only is it casual day here at the puppet theatre, we're also moving to summer hours. That's right, less time in mum's basement more time in our friends' basements.
The biggest (non) story of the week...
...has to be Frogren's contract situation.
- Ninja offered his take;
- Steve at Hockey Analysis stepped up here; and
- The Puck Stops Here weighed in on competing CBA language
On Thursday night I was chatting with a sports reporter who said the NHL is stalling on approving the Frogren deal while they try to negotiate a new transfer agreement. Apparently, the League isn't too happy that the Leafs have done their own thing, possibly seting a precedent for player transfer payments that are higher than the NHL would like. FWIW, he also said Frogren will be a Leaf by September and this has more to do with a slow news day than any legitimate legal concerns.
In the interim, the world waits for Glen Healy to "bring out the heavy artillery" to make sure that the League "does not destroy Frogren's career." (And I wait for Healy to come down with a chronic case of laryngitis).
In the rest of the week that was
- We tried to poke fun at the Sens
- Moose and I debated brass
- Stajan re-signed
Today's new lemon fresh content from the blogosphere
- If anyone questions the Finger contract, Leafs Nation can just point to the horizon, yell "Hey is that Federov over there?!?" and then make a break for it.
- Could this be a secret Tampa Bay scouting report on Brandon Bochenski?
- Psuedonym does some math on the Leafs roster - are they Leafs really getting younger?
- There's a new-ish Leaf blog called the Ballad of Wendel Clark (or at least it's new to me). Go check it out...and if folks are aware of other Leaf blogs that we're not adequately posting/ checking/ plagirizing/ mocking please hit us up in the comments section.
- JFJ and Mike Gillis would both give this guy a huge contract with an NMC and wouldn't be troubled by his rather odd chest hair.
- Sean at Down Goes Brown points out a Bruce Garrioch pun about Emery's decision to play in Russia.
- Interesting thought about geographic divisional alignments (e.g. NHL) vs. a more dispersed approach (e.g. NFL) over at the Sports Economist. I've always loved the idea of the Leafs being in an Original Six division, but maybe that's because I'm old.
- Chemmy read Brunt's book on Bobby Orr. I read it too and the only thing I remember is that in Orr's heyday peelers *ahem* groomed themselves to mimic how Orr taped his stick (come to think of it, taping my stick is a really great euphimism for another, uh, solo activity).
- Speaking of Brunt, Toronto Sports Media Blog takes a well placed shot at some of Brunt's recent ramblings.
- No hockey content, but a great correction in Newsday (hat tip to Deadspin)
- Late yesterday, I put up a post over at my Bitter Leaf blog about the sorry state of music at Leaf home games. Down Goes Brown responded with a great comment about how games used to be at MLG. Other than icing a competent team and slashing beer prices, I'd love to know how Leaf fans would change the in-game experience down at the ACC.
- **update** Greener at He Score, He Shoot! has posted his thoughts on Emery signing in Russia
And now for the comments...

Man, I miss the Gardens
I’d love to know how Leaf fans would change the in-game experience down at the ACC
Little or no advertising, platinum section at the top, not at the bottom, and organ music between every stop in play. I like your idea of having the Leaf players select their own songs to play after they score.
I also want to see 2 giant Mickey Mouse hands clapping, but with new CG graphics that cost a miilion dollars.
Also, how ‘bout Box seats for Bloggers? Is this a good idea, or bad? Curious.

Blog Box
I second this movement, but only if the word free or cheap is involved

it's my blog in a box
I second this movement, but only if the word free or cheap is involved
or Cheap as Free. That’d be awesome
I think the blog box is a great idea for markets that are underserviced, but I don’t think it’s the right thing for Toronto.
Blog box access would pretty much result in nothing more than game reports and post-game quotes, not exactly what I’m looking for in a blog and not exactly something that doesn’t already exist, in excess, for Leaf fans.
If anything, I’d like to see the Leafs do the opposite and cull the media herd – eliminate the weak, infirm and overly-speculative.

If the ACC wants to improve the in-game experience, the absolute #1 priority should be getting the platinum folks back in their damn seats at the start of a period. I can’t imagine anything sapping the life out of a building more than ten rows of prime seats sitting empty for much of the game. It’s an embarassment.
I know these people are rich and don’t care about hockey and are working on business deals in the lounge. But that doesn’t mean you can’t herd them back into the arena when the time comes. Ever been to a play with an intermission? They use dimming lights and soft bells to gently remind those upper class twits to get back into their seats on time. Surely the ACC could do something similar.
Short of that, here’s an idea: have a “standby” list for kids and lower class families that could never afford a ticket. If you’re not in your platinum seat at the start of the period, you can stay in the lounge and we give your seat to somebody who’ll appreciate it.

I totally second this opinion. That’s why I want the Platinum seats moved up to the top—where they can’t be seen, and won’t effect the atmosphere. If they don’t want to watch, fine, but I don’t wanna have to watch them not watching.

Absolutely agree
Nothing irritates me more than the atmosphere at the ACC as portrayed on tv. It’s so quiet! The ACC “seatfiller” program could be a great concept. I’m sure the corporate suits could get some kind of BS tax break for charitable work, and people who would never be able to get into the lower bowl of a Leafs game have a great period (or two) of watching.
Personally I don’t even get up during the intermissions during the few times I’ve been to Canucks games. I have a fear that I’ll get stuck in a lineup for pretzels or beer and not make it back in time for puck drop. For me, paying 80+ for the tickets it would be absolute sacrelidge. Even on a 6-0 blowout by anaheim over the woeful canucks I wouldn’t move and savoured every expensive moment.
Class struggle, comrades!

Stand-by list
I love the idea of a stand-by list of kids and real hockey fans who can’t afford a ticket, but I’d target people who talk on their cell phones throughout the game.
Ushers should target these people and physically eject them, turning their seats over to somebody who really wants to see the game.

what about...
seat fillers like they have for awards shows? Only you pay them a really, really cheap ticket instead of them paying you? Just something off the top of my head. but at least it wouldn’t seem so embarrassing.
Platinum delays
I don’t think the issue is that the fans in the platinums don’t care about hockey, I think it’s a matter of planning and efficiency. (It’s been my experience that the business deal makers and non-hockey fans can be found ignoring the game up in the boxes.)
I’ve sat in the platinums a few times, but I’ve only had access to the Platinum lounge once and there is a huge challenge in getting back into your seat at the end of the intermission.
The access corridors between the lounge and the seats are too small for the crush of people and the ushers won’t let you get back to your seat until there’s a stop in play. When the play stops, usually only about 1/3 to 1/2 the folks in line are able to get back to their seats, so you have wait for another stop in play. Meanwhile the platinums stay empty and the ACC remains as quiet as a church.
It really is poor planning and I’m amazed that both MLSE and the ticket holders haven’t pushed harder to work out a more efficient system.
Then again, I’m always amazed at the number of people who’ll watch the game on the monitors near the concessions when they’re less than 100 feet from the live action.
