The Day After (I will not tell a pun FTB edition)
Good morning Leaf fans, some of you may know me from my blog bitter leaf fan, and some of you may know me for my legendary community work. I'm going to be your host here at PPP this morning.
I've just come back from two weeks traveling the west coast from Seattle to Tofino. Usually I return from my annual vacation refreshed, full of new insights, and ready to take on the world. But not this year.
I have no idea why, but I've come back from holidays feeling soft and out of game shape. To put things in a larger context - as I sit here typing this I'm actually contemplating ordering the shamwow.
That thing looks ridiculously good. And it's German...
My new found love for super-absorbent shammies aside, here's a quick look at the White Noise in Leafs Nation:
- Steve at Hockey Analysis provides some nice insight into the trio of UFAs signed by the Leafs
- Raking Leafs (welcome back Ninja!) puts up a post speculating on Sundin's future
- Down Goes Brown is not down with the Finger contract
- Over at Sports and the City, Navin posts his UFA wish list
- Former Little Lebowski Urban Achiever MF37 (hey, I know that guy!) offers his thoughts on the Leafs UFA signings (and unlike your other co-hosts here, likes what the Leafs have done).
- Cliff Fletcher tells Bill Watters that Bryan McCabe is not in the Leafs' plans for next year (and Watters responds with a powerful, insightful monosyllable: "Oh.")
- Working Class Howard chats with the Silver Fox and finds out the Leafs will be signing a D-man from Europe who hasn't played in the NHL yet and acquiring a centre via free-agency or trade. Anyone have any guesses as to who this might be?
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post thinks the Jeff Finger signing is so crazy that it merits the rarely used "crazy-crazy" tag. Speaking of crazy, I'd like Dater to explain how a guy logs an average of 20 minutes a night gets "gassed" 20 seconds into a shift (other than by playing 60 shifts a game...)
- In the "write-your-own-punch line" category the Avalanche have signed Andrew "exploding glove" Raycroft to a one-year deal. I can only conclude they can't get Centre Ice TV, the Internet, radio or newspapers in Denver.
- Avalanche blog In the Cheap Seats gets input from Down Goes Brown on the Raycroft deal and DGB was very diplomatic.
- The Avalanche also signed Darcy Tucker to a two-year deal. No word yet on how feistiness, heart and agitation compare to god-awful GA60 and a declining ability to play at ES and PP.
- **UPDATE** Die Hard Blue and White puts the Finger deal into context by looking at some other zany UFA signings (and compares the Raycroft deal to rancid Salmon. I think he's being too kind as that Salmon was once a palatable option)

When are all of you folks going to help me get this page ranked higher on Google?
This site is the 27th result for “toronto maple leafs blog”. There are four defunct blogs and a San Jose Sharks blog ahead of us.

You guys
From an Avs fan:
If you can get past his salary (which I admit might be tough to do) I think you guys will like Jeff Finger. I think he will make your team better on the blueline. He plays a very fan-friendly style (big hits, decent offense, shot blocking). I’ll warn you.. he doesn’t skate entirely well and will look slow at times.
Almost everyone in Avs country wanted the Avs to re-sign Finger (not at $3.5M/season) and he was a fan favorite. When he came into the lineup for the first time our defense had: Skrastins, Leopold, Sauer, Clark, Ken Klee and Ossi Vaananan. He made the entire unit better by a) dumping Vaananan from the lineup permanantly but more importantly b) providing a physical presense and mindset on the blueline.

I agree..
As someone who watches pretty much every televised NW division game NOT featuring the mad defensive stylings of the Wild, I was impressed with Finger. He’s definitely a presence, and while he might not show up on the stat sheet a lot, he definitely crashes and bangs with the best of them.
Still too expensive, but damn, it could have been worse. Looking at what Chicago paid for Campbell and NYR for Redden.. Obviously both would command a higher salary than Finger, but cripes.. I am amazed. It’s like the CBA never happened!

Odd..
From here:
The best decisions? Lou Lamoriello got a proven offensive performer in Brian Rolston, and a player who has played in New Jersey before. Edmonton’s decision to bring in winger Erik Cole for underachieving Joni Pitkanen could pay major dividends.
and from here:
Jamal Mayers was brought in because he’s a good guy, and maybe that’s the reason for repatriating Joseph, too, once again establishing the Leafs as the NHL team most likely to employ the same player twice.

I’m way too lazy, but I wonder if Cox’s statement about the Leafs being the team most likely to bring a guy back is true. It sure seems like the Avs love to bring back their stars, and the Devils did it twice yesterday,

Am I the only one who thinks it’s not entirely outside the realm of possibility that at least a small part of the reason Fletcher brought Joseph back (aside from him still being a major upgrade on Raycroft, being good value dollar-wise and selling all kinds of Leafs crap) is that it might possibly help influence Sundin’s decision to return, as they’re pretty tight with each other?

I think it serves the dual purpose of a solid, problem free backup (he was awesome backing up kipper in the playoffs) and as fan service. It worked completely on me, and I bet a lot of people are really happy they can dig their Joseph #31 jerseys out!

Kubina number
he could be 4 (3+1), 3 (3/1 or 3^1), 2 (3-1). Unfortunately, the NHL has yet to allow decimals or minus signs, so we can’t have all the other possibilities, like -2 (1-3) or .333 (1/3) or anything REALLY complicated such as square roots.

Oh absolutely
I agree that Fletcher wouldn’t have done it if there weren’t a lot of hockey-related and fan-related reasons to do so… but I still think maybe that Joseph’s friendship with Sundin was at least a minor consideration here… like the Caps and then the Rangers used to do for Jagr with bringing in his Czech buddies… if you have a team like the Canucks looking to make Mats the highest paid player in the league, and the Leafs obviously not willing to go that high (and having blown any chance of getting him to take a hometown discount by basically hanging him out to dry with the press last season), that the only advantage Fletcher might see the Leafs having is an appeal to his history with the team and the ability to bring his old buddy back to town… maybe I’m out to lunch, but fuck, it makes sense to me… Joseph could be on the phone right now with Mats trying to sell him on coming back…

Could very well be! Fletcher might be shoveling the “problem” guys out the door while getting the good guys in who would gel better with Mats..
As for Kubina, I would hope Cujo gets to keep 31.. He’s been in the league for longer than kubina, so it would probably be the case..

hmmm
I don’t think so… Kubina’s a Cup winner, and from the looks of it a top-2 defenseman… Joseph’s never won shit and he’s the backup goalie… I think Kubina wins here, regardless of Joseph’s longevity or history with the Leafs… besides, wouldn’t Peddie and Tannenbaum love Joseph to wear a different number so all those old Cujo fans have to go out and buy new jerseys instead of just pulling their old ones out of mothballs?

Any cup won by a SE division team doesn’t really count.. Those are the NHL’s blackout years, like it had been drinking too much!
It would be interesting though, I think Cujo deserves it more anyway based on seniority.

some perspective
Atlanta Thrashers sign UFA defenceman Ron Hainsey(who?) to a five-year, $22.5 million contract.
Toronto signs UFA defenceman Jeff Finger to a 4 year deal worth $14 million.
Hainsey: 8G, 24A, 32P, – 7, 25PIM
Finger: 8G, 11A, 19P, +12, 40PIM
by general borschevsky on Jul 2, 2008 4:22 PM EDT 0 recs
Hainsey was the guy who Cox said was looking for 6 years at $30M. He also claimed the Leafs were looking at him.
Let’s just say I’m happy that Atlanta got him.

so, $3.75 a year for a shutdown D-man who put up 11 points last year…
if this is the market for this type of d-men, maybe finger won’t be so bad…
granted, orpik has more experience, but hell, a defensive defenseman like finger cannot be bad for the toronto maple leafs
