FTB - Open Thread Edition
Today is the kind of day that makes you long for a Saturday night in December (but not the 13th or 27th) so that you could curl up on the couch with the Leafs and a couple of adult beverages. Sure, the MLS All-Star game is a pretty good substitute but it's just West Ham.
Anyway, while reminding the Europeans that we still do not know how they came to follow the Leafs and hoping that some of the shrinking violets will contribute to what has become an interesting look at the Origins of Fandom I'll make this an open thread to discuss whatever you want. Defensive pairings, what forwards will play on which lines, is CuJo a traitor, whatever.
If you have a link to share drop it in the comments:
- Canada is obviously going to win the World Juniors but they will not have Stamkos.
- Just the Centre of the Sporting Universe G & M? Try the entire universe.
- Koopa Kid ponders the eternal question: If the Toronto media were not such over the top d-bags like Cathal Kelly, Damien Cox, et al would the players improve?
- Speaking of that insufferable POS Cathal Kelly, deal with the fact that TFC fans are the gold standard in the league. And stop calling the team FC!
- Norte escaped from He Score! He Shoot! and started his own blog. I told Greener to not let Moose handle knot-making duty.

Get things kicked off...
This comes from that site but seems like a good way to start a day of idle chit-chat:
Re: Bouwmeester
In my opinion, and according to several of the scouts I have met with, the Maple Leafs, Bruins and Devils my be offering up the most.
What the hell could the Leafs offer to get Jay Bouwmeester that would entice the Panthers?

Luongo for Bertuzzi makes me think we could get Bouwmeester for Andy Wozniewski’s old Leafs jerseys, two platinum tickets to a Panthers game in Toronto, and McCabe.

Nice
I would imagine it would have to involve at least one defenceman under contract and any players involved would have to be roster players since I think the Panthers really want to make the playoffs. Looking at the Jokinen trade I wouldn’t be surprised at anything.

Important note: the Panthers’ organization is unquestionably dumber than ours.

Oh yeah, whenever I get really down I think of teams like the Panthers and Blue Jackets and feel a little better.

Polish Prince retiring..
Czerkawski calls it quits, from the “blink-and-you-missed-them” leaf playerdom..

Oh Noes!
Yet another in a long strong of “hey, if he can kind of, sort of get part of the way back to his peak he’ll be decent” acquisitions that have turned into “YOU SUCK! I HOPE YOU BREAK YOUR LEG AND SAVE US THE AGONY OF WATCHING YOU!” acquisitions.

Weird, apparently there have only been six NHLers from Poland. I always thought McCabe was Polish based on the own goals.

How many of JFJ's acquisitions are no longer playing?
By my count…
Allison
Belfour
Czerkawski
Domi
Green
Kilger
Leetch
Lindros
O’Neill
Plus Suglabov, Khavanov and Berg are in Europe.
Sure, any GM is going to have a certain percentage of his signings retire/ get injured/ play in Europe and I don’t have the actuarial tables to compare this string to the average NHL record, but I have to think this is one helluva run by JFJ.

He’s still in the shower ‘cause it says “lathe, rinse, repeat” and there’s no “stop and dry your hair”

Francis was a JFJ deal…. that was the same year as Leetch.
And don’t forget Ferguson’s slick pickup of Calle Johansson.

In my mind I had housley and francis around the same time, so I got a little confused.. Francis wasn’t a total bust as a Leaf, at least.
Dear god, I hope the Leafs don’t take a flyer on Glen Murray after his buyout now.. ack.

truly open thread
Hey, does anyone where I could find a short-sleeved Leafs shirt that is:
1: Cheap
2: not fugly
3: something I could actually fit in (I’d be about an adult small/youth large in a pinch; women’s sizes are all loopy from site to site.)
Thanks!

products
Ebay is always a safe option with a ton of selection (if you take the time to look through millions of things you arnt looking for).
I personally hate using the net to buy cloths, but living in the states would probably call for drastic measures to find Leaf gear

If you want to pay $35 for a baby-T...
...or $60 for a light pink sleeveless polo or $50 for this (albeit pretty cool) T-shit
then the NHL shop is just for you…
or try here: http://www.cupstuff.com/nhl/toronto/leafs.htm

I don’t like buying clothing online, but yeah, drastic times…
The NHL shop is not for me. I looked through stuff and I thought, “well, it;s cool, but not $50 cool.”

Why I support the Leafs
I have family in Toronto and started watching hockey late-night when I was at University. Toronto seemed a logical choice for a team to follow. There’s also a genetic thing where I’m only allowed to follow teams that never win anything.
The End.
by article1 on Jul 24, 2008 10:36 PM EDT 0 recs
We suffer from a similar genetic disease. I blame my dad. He didn’t follow Liverpool and they managed to win a few trophies. Two years ago he started sharing my obsession and now they can’t win anything.
