FTB - So Damn Close
Well, you can't say that Canadian athletes are playing with some fire in their belly. The water polo team had their coach suspended and three players ejected during a rough and tumble game against Australia. Mike Brown's fourth place finish is heartbreaking but impressive if you think that he is the fourth best person in the world. Apparently rain is delaying the rowing events today and women's softball where Canada has gone 3-0 and is facing the US. Matt takes a look at the Sports Illustrated medal predictions and wonders how many Canada was meant to have by now. Take a guess and check the first comment for the answer.
Anyway, it'll be another long day (why can't all of the international sporting events be in my time zone?) but here are some links to help pass the time:
- Torontosportsmedia is listening to sports radio so that we don't have to. I think we can all like what he heard.
- Kukla's Korner finds an interesting nugget about a possible McCabe trade. Apparently we have to wait until the first of September so that the Leafs can cover the $2M bonus.
- Did Sundin paint himself into a corner?
- Someone call Lou Dobbs! There's a war on the NHL's middle class. Is it ridiculous to call millionaires middle class? Probably just a little bit.
- MD Milner has a good article on the Olympics and everyone's favourite swimmer.

NHL 09 player ratings released
Not the overall ratings, but the specific numbers for each category. Go on and guess which Leaf has the lowest rating in any category.
Down Goes Brown - Because it's technically possible that things may get better before we all die.

Ahhhhh
I saw that yesterday and can’t see it because of the firewall at work. I am going to guess that Bryan McCabe’s defensive awareness might be a little low.

McCabe actually has pretty solid ratings. His shooting accuracy (own net) rating is especially high.

I can’t wait…who has the lowest ratings?
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Oh no...
I was hoping it was Jason Blake, but it’s Jeffs Freakin’ Finger, isn’t it?

Finger isn’t rated very highly, although again they don’t have the “overall” rating posted yet. He seems like an average defensive defenceman, not much more. He is one of the few guys with a decent toughness rating, though.
The lowest rating on the team is… Carlo Colaiacovo’s durability rating.
(Actually, it’s tied with Ryan Hollweg’s shooting accuracy.)

If it's in the game, it's in the game.

...in the game.
I like the way they’ve included Sundin on the roster.

Sucking Finger
Finger is at the bottom or tied for the bottom in 10 categories. The next worst Leaf is Boyd Devereaux, at the bottom of 8. Grabovski, Moore, and Hollweg are at the bottom or tied for the bottom in 7 categories.

It’s going to be a long, long season…

Yikes
Overall or just on the Leafs?
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Yes! That’s just for the Leafs.
I have a lot of time on my hands, but seriously, there’s a limit.

Does this mean that McCabe for Bouwmeester and Horton is not going to happen?

I don’t think that we can expect the trade to result in any benefit between teams other than trading problems. The Leafs can’t really expect to get any picks or prospects because the other team is doing them a favour and the other team can’t expect to gain anything either because in theory the Leafs will be taking some of their problems off of their hands.
After the trade we’ll likely feel the same as Mrs. Omen: thoroughly unsatisfied.

Didn't we go over the McCabe bonus like six weeks ago?
The McCabe bonus thing was hashed out pretty well in the blogs and message boards back at the end of June.
Hell, I’m not the quickest draw, yet I posted about McCabe not being tradeable until MLSE cut his September bonus cheque way back on July 3.

I knew I had read it somewhere. Not that The Fraud or anyone at The Sun or Star would stumble upon it as an excuse.
That would help to explain to people why Kubina hasn’t been moved or why Fletcher seems so zen about McCabe.

McCabe zen
well, ignorance being bliss and all, perhaps McCabe’s rubbed off on him…or Fletch had an “unfortunate” “accident” in store akin to Welly’s “accidental” broken foot playing indoor soccor.

Maybe you should just forward your pieces to the Toronto dailies so it’ll be easier for them to keep on top of things.
What a bunch of maroons.
