The latest in a long line of bloggers v. Howard Berger missives took me a long time so read it again (or finish it, I know it was long). Here are some links to get you through the morning. Toss any others in the comments
- Mike Ulmer has Six Things He Knows making six more than the combined totals of Mssrs. Cox, Berger, and Simmons.
- The next coach of the Leafs is getting groomed on the farm.
- Who will be the next captain of the Leafs? Vote in the poll below.
- This is a random link to someone that thinks that players get more credit for playing in Toronto than less...
- Time for history lessons! First, why Conn Smythe is awesome and Stafford had to have been spawned from a defective egg. Part I of a history of the Leafs and part II is here.
- DJ points out that The Fraud is lying once again.
- Joe has some fun with the Bleacher Report.
- Fan Fiction gone terribly terribly wrong.

Steen for C!
Really the only reasonable choice. Kaberle is too quiet and subdued, Kubina will probably be gone soon, Mats is retiring and Stajan only has the respect of athletic socks. Dress socks laugh at him.

Dress socks laugh at him.
You don’t even want to know what wool socks say about him.
I’d go with Steen too in the long-term but for the next two years I think Kubina is a good choice. Give Steen, Antro, and Kabby the As.

Steen gets nothing! I just ordered a Steen jersey without the A or C don’t screw me over.

You’re going to need to start putting out if you want me to put an Antropov jersey underneath the tree for you, mister.

Jersey First
I don’t want the old bait and switch pulled on me. Just like girls need to have dinner first, I need to see one blue 80 Antropov under the tree.

Kubina
You know, I used to dispise the guy, but for some reason I don’t hate him that much anymore. We’re not close buddies or anything, but I don’t feel like he’s slapped my mom and kicked my dog or anything.
And Chemmy, does the pain have anything to do with hard tacos an hour after having wisodom teeth out? Dumbass.(thunk on the back of the head)
Making stuff up since real Leafs news is far too depressing

last i checked
lidstrom isn’t the most vocal guy, either.
based on service, quality, and consistency, no one, NO ONE, deserves the captaincy more than my main man tomas kaberle…

Basically...
It’s down to Kaberle and Kubina. I wouldn’t care either way. You could make good arguments for either one. The one thing is that Kubina could be a stop gap while picking Kaberle is a long-term decision.
If the team wanted to take some time to see how the kids pan out then at least Kubina gives them some time to evaluate their options.

outside influence
What about Shanahan? If Sundin leaves, there is potentially a spot still open for a distinguished elder statesman (ex. Ramage) to provide the leadership qualities that future Captains should posses. I’ve always liked Shanny, would love to see him in a Leafs’ uniform, and would love to see his spirit become the example. I’d make him the Captain the day he signed, which hopefully would be the day after Sundin retired.

I’d rather not parachute someone into a leadership position. Same deal with Jamal Mayers being named as potential captain. At least Kubina has two years under his belt in the city.

HALLELUJAH!!!
Seriously, I’ve only hated Wozniewski more. How he’s scored 99 goals in the MLS is beyond me.

when the hatred approaches wozniewski levels, you know it’s bad…
the comparison is great though. how did cunningham score 99 goals in MLS, and how in the name of fucking fuck did woz actually, ACTUALLY, play 76 games for the toronto maple leafs

The guy had a tap-in against Montreal from literally 2 feet. It was one of the few moments in life when you could look at an athlete and say “I would have buried that” but it’s true. Anyone of the 20,000 baying and screaming fans would have scored it and set off a freaking riot in the stands. Instead, he just let the ball hit his leg and Toronto lost.

yeah i think that was the last straw for carver. hopefully dichio’s back soon. we need that cat. and amado’s gone for 2 games, and wynne and edu are missing cuz of the olympics…it’s been a tough slog of late man…can’t score god damn goals

The funny thing is that people will swear up and down that Danny Dichio is not a good striker and that TFC needs better players and blah blah blah what a bunch of BS.
11 goals in 30 appearances is not the best rate for a striker (ideally you want at least 1 goal in 2 games) but he adds such a huge dimension. He is a release valve for the defence when they are under pressure, his strength in the air makes him a tough guy to handle for the opposing defence, his great touch keeps attacks ticking over, and he actually is a really good finisher.
The last two seasons have been hugely derailed by his absence. Montreal would have been buried in Toronto if Dichio was healthy. Once he comes back it’ll make a huge difference.
And all of the absences are killer. Edu’s not having a great year but Roselund is crap, Wynne can’t cross the ball to save his life but he stretches the defence, and Amado is awesome.

would you agree that robert’s been a disappointment?

Only in that more goals were expected from him than it probably made sense to.
Again, if Dichio is in the lineup Robert’s contribution is looked on in a more positive light. Now that there is a scoring drought more goals are expected from him but he puts in a good effort and I can’t even begin to count the number of times a very promising run has been stopped short by a lucky tackle or a bad pass by Wynne.

really eh? i thought marvell was beginning to come into his own…
but i did expect more goals from robert, and i guess that was unrealistic…hopefully they can pick it up and make the playoffs…transfer period ends next week and i think mo will make another move or two

Sundin in Colorado rumor
I don’t know why just seeing Sundin and Forsberg together has sparked this rumor here in Colorado. Some of us Avs fans must be thinking the Kariya/Selanne signings at heavily reduced pay after Roy retired is going to happen again, only with Sundin, Forsberg, AND Sakic.
Just keep away from Vancouver.

The funny thing is that that Kariya/Selanne below market package deal is the kind of thing that Leafs fans are supposed to believe every player wants to make in Toronto.
Writers in Colorado are just realizing that the glory days are ending and they miss the old guard.
