FTB - Vacation's Over

Cane_medium

It's Tuesday, and the long weekend is over, time to go back to our crummy jobs. I was in the bathroom this morning and suddenly it hit me: it was dark in there, despite being sunny outside.  I was momentarily saddened, but while switching on the light so I could read Guns N Ammo, I realized that the bathroom being dark in the morning meant hockey must be right around the corner. Hold on tight cowgirls, we're getting close.

Some links to read while you fondly reminisce about getting drunk and jumping off the roof this weekend:

by LeafFanInVan on Sep 2, 2008 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Apparently McCabe is already in Florida, has bought a house and has registered his kids at school.

Is it wrong that a tiny part of me would like to see Fletcher pull the deal off the table, then call up McCabe and say “See, it’s not so fun when some dickhead ruins your plans, is it?”

Also, Cox

Nice to see him come back from watching Tennis all summer swingin’. Seems odd he is still going on about poor decisions from the past and how it has left the cupboard bare etc, without any mention of perhaps signs that the ship is being pointed in the right direction for the future.

I imagine in 3-4 years times when the Leafs are winning the division handily he’ll be going on about how terrible the team was in 2007l..

Naw, he’s got to be a Federer fan. Nadal shows too much emotion and has too many flaws in his game to be his favourite.

I hate to say it...

…but I think there’s more than a kernel of truth in Cox’s latest entry.

The Leafs have done a horrible job of managing assets since the lockout (if not longer) and I think that’s continued somewhat with Fletcher’s middling job this summer.

I’m down with the UFA signings (it’s only money) but the other acquisitions all have a downside:

Schenn is great, but he cost an additional 2nd and 3rd round pick.
Mayers is fine, but another 3rd round pick gone.
Hollwegg is a baffilng move and another 5th round pick out the window.
Raycroft should have been sent to the ECHL so there was no lingering cap hit.
The Leafs waived Wellwood and then spent a 2nd round pick to get a small, soft centre to take his place…and now there are rumours that trading McCabe is going to cost the Leafs another draft pick.

I may be alone on this, but I don’t think this is a good pattern or an optimal return on assets. I also don’t think it’s how championships or division titles are won.

The buyouts don’t make sense. Buyouts are for teams that have money trouble more than cap trouble, or players with no movement clauses. If a player can be sent down to the AHL or ECHL, a team with lots of money could send anyone down there and free up their full cap amount right away.

I disagree on the draft though. 6 and 7 went Filatov and Wilson, no one knows if Filatov is even coming to the NHL now, and Wilson isn’t as good of a prospect as Schenn. Trading a 2nd and 3rd to bump from 7-5 in this draft was a wise move.

Uggh

When you write it out all rationally and with evidence then it sure looks terrible. JFJ definitely did a terrible job of cashing in on assets before they declined (McCabe, Tucker) and there are definitely some bad moves in your list:

Mayers is fine, but another 3rd round pick gone.
Hollwegg is a baffilng move and another 5th round pick out the window.
Raycroft should have been sent to the ECHL so there was no lingering cap hit.

But…the extra picks for Schenn I can live with for now but maybe not when him, Filatov, and the other picks develop. For now, it was a necessary move to signal the team’s changing vision (not the end to trading draft picks but the end of letting first rounders go…baby steps).

Grabovski’s YouTube videos make me think he’ll either be another Sergei Berezin (in the new NHL that is great) or another Aleksandr Suglobov (that would be terrible).

As for McCabe, the pick isn’t revealed yet and would I rather a pick not have gone? Absolutely. Unfortunately, getting rid of the useless veteran leadership (per Ron Wilson) comes at a cost. Better to lose one draft pick than risk having McCabe poison a large crop of youngsters (Stralman, Schenn, Kulemin, Grabovski, Tlusty, etc).
