Of course we’d all prefer the Red Wings. They mixed in several Stanley Cups. This poll is basically asking “do you want championships and then crappy seasons, or championships and then good seasons”.

How about: would you rather be the 1990s Rangers, or the 2000s Senators?

Not

When I saw the original question, I thought of the Red Wings, not the … the…the.. I can’t say it…ok, the watchamacalits down east.

Living in the NY Metro Area, the Rangers 94 team still buys them a free pass to stink. I chose “A”.

Skewed Results

I can’t help but feel that the results of this poll will be skewed due to a deep and sometimes unintelligible hatred that some of us harbour for the Sens, and therefore prevents us from looking at this logically.

Of course I would rather have sustained competitiveness, but I have been indoctrinated into a world where being the sens isn’t an option….I wonder how that came about…

by claudvandamn on Sep 25, 2008 3:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

"Sens" is a dirty word

I couldn’t willingly choose the 10 year sustained competitiveness option specifically for this reason. I’d love a cup, but having a shot at a few would be almost as nice. Just don’t call us the “Sens”

Anybody throws me against the boards I'm gonna piss all over myself.

by blurr1974 on Sep 25, 2008 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Could be.

But if you swap the teams around, you’d still get the same results. Would you rather be the 2003-08 Sharks (at least the second round every year, no Cups) or Hurricanes (one cup, no other playoffs)? I mean, it has to be the Hurricanes right?

Down Goes Brown - Because it's technically possible that things may get better before we all die.

Definitely the Hurricanes.

The Sharks still look good. Their window hasn’t closed yet. Say Dallas or Carolina. The Stars have had some bumps, but for the most part have been a perrenial winner, and won a cup (10 years ago this season, so it works.) The Canes, have won and then fallen off the map. In that view, I’d like the Stars, as they’re still closer to another than the Canes are.

"The Sharks still look good. Their window hasn’t closed yet. "

Right, but the question said five years. Not ten or fifty, but five.

I’m a Leafs fan. I can do five bad years in my sleep.

The Cup is all that matters, and I’d rather have one successful season and nine failures than ten failures. Duh.

by J.P. on Sep 25, 2008 3:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sure

But since there are no guarantees would you rather one season with a good shot at success and nine with no shot or 10 seasons with a good shot.

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.

by PPP on Sep 25, 2008 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, obviously the latter, but that’s not the question – the question was if you could have one title and crap or perennially be close but never win it.

by J.P. on Sep 25, 2008 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

...

The question was win one and then suck or not suck but have no guarantee of winning. Not that you won’t (although that is alluded to with the “Sens” being there.)

If we’re talking a team like the Stars or Ducks, I’d have voted the other way…

This question is the fan’s view of the question that Tanenbaum was asked where the assumption is that no Cups are won in the latter scenario.

I must have read the poll question wrong then, because I don’t recall it saying “never win a cup” as the second option.

by blurr1974 on Sep 25, 2008 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, it doesn’t say it explicitly but part of the uproar is the fans assumption that the long-term includes no Cups.

by blurr1974 on Sep 25, 2008 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I assume the long-term means no guaranteed Cups, but they’re possible.

But even then, the question was phrased around five years. It’s one thing to build a good team, but you’d have to be pretty darn sure you were going to win multiple Cups to pass up one guaranteed one. Even if you had the best team in the league each year, you’re still only an iffy bet to win multiple Cups.

Take the sure thing.

I just want them to win a Cup in my lifetime. If they came close 15 years in a row, it wouldn’t mean a thing. We wouldn’t be a laughing stock, which is good, but when we lost it would hurt, for real. I could go seven years in a row missing the playoffs and then win ONE CUP and then seven years in a row of missing the playoffs and that would be fine with me. My life would be complete.

One Cup Before I Die is a good Leaf blog name suddenly up for grabs.

That’s going to be the title of the book I write when the Leafs actually win the Cup. Like Simmons’ Now I Can Die In Peace but with many more book signing tour stops in ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary.

Lets try and win a cup before then, huh?

Agreed

I’ve already planned a second mortgage on the house to finance my trip back to Toronto when they win the cup

seconded

I’ve already planned on not settling down until the Leafs win the cup so I can…adequately celebrate. I just don’t want to be a crazy cat lady, but only because I don’t like cats. Crazy Koi lady perhaps?

Making stuff up since real Leafs news is far too depressing

by loser domi on Sep 25, 2008 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No kidding

I don’t want them to win when I’m at an age that the shock or the celebration might kill me. It would ruin my plan to take a year off work to rub the win into every other hockey fan on the planet’s face.

To those that want to win a Cup at all costs, your cheering for the right team! Cause we won a SHIT load of them….and then became shit, for a very long time….so long…..oh god the pain.

So really, the poll should be this. Do you want to win a cup, and then go 41 (plus probably another 10) and NEVER MAKE THE F’ING FINALS? Or go 41 years WITHOUT a Cup, but make it in the playoff 35-40 of those years, make the finals every 5 years, and with a lucky bounce, or Steve Smith on the other team, MAYBE win one?

Because right now, I could really use another ‘92-’97 winning streak. I’m only 27 freakin’ years old, and my glory years for the Leafs are ‘92-’97. Now how sad is that?

by Kobra29 on Sep 25, 2008 6:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Good point

We’re living the results of that policy!

You have to admit, 92-94 was pretty sweet. So were 99-04.
