FTB - We Have Always Been At War With Bryan McCabe
Joking aside I wish McCabe the best in Florida. He's been recently demonized by a lot of fans and the media in Toronto, and been used as a scapegoat for the Leafs problems that have been a long time coming.
The good news is, it looks like Fletcher has convinced MLSE that the only way to win in a salary cap era is with good drafting and smart team building, so hopefully he can execute that plan.
This morning's hot potatos:
- koopa kid thinks Toronto fleeced Florida in the Belak trade. Maybe he forgot that Belak was drafted eighth overall. (oof)
- Steve lays down the Hammer of Logic (R) (TM) (Patent pending) on Damien Cox by refuting the claim that the Leafs won't get 30 wins. On an important side note: I hope Cox is right, Tavares here we come!
- jaredoflondon's blog holds mystical powers, also if your hand is bigger than your face you may be related to Jason Blake have cancer.
- Carlo Colaiacovo was considering changing his last name to Ocho Cinco, but find out what he actually changed it to over at The Wonderful World of Loser Domi.
- wraparoundcurl shows that NHL players are as lumpy and strange looking as the rest of us.
- MF37 makes some good points about the Leafs' asset management. I wish that there was a statistic like VORP or Win Shares for hockey because I feel like it would show that despite McCabe scoring so much he was costing the team more than he was worth.
- Check out the second comment on TSM's latest post. Pure, unadulterated, Cox-brilliance.

Matt Stajan…really needs to have a good season this year…he had 33 points last year in 82 games…39 the year before…he cannot, absolutely cannot, regress again…

i’m not questioning his heart. i just want him to step up. i’m not saying he’s compare-able to guys like mike richards and jeff carter, but in their first two seasons in the league, they both put up 30 odd points, just like stajan. in their third seasons, richards exploded, and carter became a legitimate goal scorer. stajan, while given much more ice time and a bigger role on the team, regressed, and that was maddeningly disappointing.
he’s a great penalty killer, but i want him to be more than just a PK specialist and a third line centre. he needs to put up 50 points this year to appease me. 45 to 50.
and stajan is nothing near captain material. i think cox threw that out there b/c matty is one of the few guys who’s always talking to the media and has a good rapport with each member of the media. until stajan proves that he can be a solid contributor in the NHL, the captain talk should be pushed back under the rug…

If he gets the opportunities to play with offensive linemates then he’ll hit that plateau.

was he not given an opportunity last year? at times he was with tucker, steen, blake, etc. our lines were constantly in flux. but i guess that could be a reason why he struggled, no stability.

They may be able to work the numbers to suggest that the Leafs will beat 30 wins, but I still put the over/under at 32….

You won our contest, just so you know. I think I’m going to wait until all the pins have been won and then ship PPP a care package so that the pins can all clear customs at once, but take your pick from the following awesome Leafs pins:

Can’t say this is a bad trade for the Leafs, and can’t say it’s a good one that will help significantly.

Clearly, it’s that fourth-rounder that pushed him over the brink.

Even though he made an argument that MF37 made that is quite fair he still found a need to lie:
First, second and third rounders were sacrificed to move up two slots in the draft to acquire the rights to Luke Schenn.

Well – he’s playing fast and loose there – the Leafs did give up their first (#7) in that deal, but he neglects to mention that they got a first back (#5). The NET loss was a second and a third, but it sounds better/worse(to him) to present it the way he did.
Douchebaggery, really.

I’m actually kind of sad to see McCabe go. It’s not just that I think he will have a Murphy-esque resurgence in Florida (minus the Cups), it’s just that he’s one of the few remaining ties to the last good team we’re likely to see for a while.
Sort of like seeing Ian Turnbull go.

The second go-round of Mike Palmateer wasn’t really good for the memories. Actually, there are some alarming comparisons to the late 1970s here. I’d better go void those memories.

VORP or Win Shares question
If you go to HockeyAnalytics.com you can download an excel spreadsheet that Alan Ryder maintains for each season that tabulates “player contribution” ratings based on marginal goals offensively and defensively…. I’d talk about it in more depth but it’d just be easier for everyone if they read Ryder’s documentation on the site.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."
- Sir Winston Churchill
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.

Hopefully Ryder and MC79 and DJ and some of the other guys doing this sort of work can get it to the same point that it has reached in baseball.

Ryder on McCabe
Ryder thinks the Leafs should have kept McCabe in the fold, rather than selling him ahem low (smart man that Ryder, wonder who else ran with the buy high sell low angle).
He also demonstrates that McCabe’s “player contribution” is much greater than Van Ryn’s.
