Leafs Trivia #4

Some are easy in this lot.

No. 21. What Leaf goaltender had three shutouts in the Stanley Cup Final? - Frank McCool

No. 22. Who did the Leafs get in exchange for Tim Horton? - Denis Dupere

No. 23. What goaltender was pressed into service once Bernie Parent jumped to the WHA? - Ron Low

No. 24. Of all the players the Leafs traded away, which one won a major NHL award the fastest? - Bernie Parent, Vezina

No. 25. Who were the three men who bought the Leafs from Conn Smythe? - Harold 'Satan' Ballard, Stafford 'Lousy Drunken Excuse for a son' Smythe, and John 'Who?' Bassett

No. 26. Which Leaf acted as Alexander Godynyuk's translator when he first got to Toronto? - Mike Krushelnyski

No. 27. In the 1990 playoffs, LA knocked Calgary out in Game 7 on a crazy power play goal where a player took a swing at a puck while lying on his stomach.  The puck then looped through the air in slow motion and stayed 6 inches past the outstreched glove of Mike Vernon, who was falling over backwards trying to catch it.  The goal scorer and the player in the box both became Leafs.  Who were they? - Mike Krushelnyski scored while Gary Roberts looked scary in the box.

No. 28. With the Leafs killing a penalty in overtime in Game 6 of the 1993 Semi-Final, Wayne Gretzky famously high-sticked Gilmour, got away with it, then scored the winner.  Who was in the box, having taken a brain-dead boarding penalty in the last minute of the third? - Glenn Anderson

No. 29. Who was the first Leaf to wear #27 after Sittler was done with it? - Miroslav Ihnacak

No. 30. The Leafs record for goals scored in the playoffs is 11 (Dave Andreychuk, 1993).  How many were scored in the third round? - Zero

25 – Stafford Smythe, Harold Ballard, and Satan
27 – Mike Krushelnyski (I know this one for sure) scored the winner while….Jamie Macoun sat in the box?
28 – Glenn Anderson

21 – Frank McCool
29 – Kordic wore it, although I’m not sure he was first. I think Lucien Deblois had it next
30 – None?

more guess

21. Is is Turk Broda?
24. Lanny MacDonald (if the Masterton counts as major award)
29. Wasn’t it Kordic?
30. one

by general borschevsky on Sep 3, 2008 7:15 PM EDT reply actions

Not Lanny – someone was faster.

It was a statistical award at the time (that’s kind of a hint).

Kordic wore #27, but he wasn’t first. They brought it out of mothballs for someone REALLY special….

21

Is definitely Frank McCool because when Potvin got 3 shutouts against the Blackhawks in…95?…he was the first since then.

OK – we’re part way home on some of them.

No. 21 – Frank ‘Ulcers’ McCool
No. 25 – Ballard and Stafford Smythe are two, the third is (or strikes me as) the least evil of the bunch, which is probably why he got out. His daughter was a tennis pro. He was either the owner or publisher of the Toronto Telegram.
No. 27 – Krushelnyski got the goal. We need the guy in the box. The two players were never teammates in Toronto (or anywhere that I can think of).
No. 28 – Anderson. Now, to be fair, he got the OT winner in Game 5. But this penalty was beyond stupid. I heard it on the radio at the time. It’s only in the past year that I actually saw it.
No. 30 – None. He got those 11 goals in the first two rounds. We could have used one in the third round. In Game 6 or 7 maybe….

23 – Jacques Plante

Depending on how you look at it, I guess. Jacques actually pre-dated Bernie, and probably played more in ‘72-73 than he was expected to, but I’m really after the person summoned from the farm before he really should have been. Guy went on to play about a dozen years, mainly for horrific teams.

Hints:

No. 22 – French-Canadian defensive forward lost to Washington in ‘74 expansion draft.
No. 23 – Goalie spent one year in Toronto and then backstopped some of the worst teams in history – No, not the Leafs. Go wash your minds out with soap.
No. 24 – a goalie again
No. 25 – the missing third person was either the owner or publisher of the Toronto Telegram. Had a daughter who was a tennis pro.
No. 26 – Look for someone with lots of vowels.
No. 27 – the ultimate warrior not named Wendel.
No. 29 – had a brother who wasn’t bad.

No. 27 – the ultimate warrior not named Wendel.

Mr. Clark?

27

I wanted to say the Bomber, but Baumgartner was traded from the Kings that year before the playoffs. So it must be the Kruiser – Mike Krushelnyski.

by general borschevsky on Sep 8, 2008 12:13 PM EDT reply actions

27, the other answer

I should read more carefully… it’s Sir Gary Robersts, isn’t it?

the ultimate warrior not named Wendel

For real, whoe else could it be?

29

A great name from my childhoiod. Miroslav Ihnacak. (In-uh-chek)

by general borschevsky on Sep 8, 2008 12:39 PM EDT reply actions

Add 27 and 29 to the solved pile. :)

Miro Ihnacak had a decent first game, with at least one goal if not two. If only he’d called it a day right then and there….

He actually played in Europe until quite recently.

And Sir Gary it was. Almost up there with the Anderson penalty in dumbness.

by 1967ers on Sep 8, 2008 1:20 PM EDT reply actions

Actually, take the name Krushelnyski and go wandering around the other unsolved questions….

by 1967ers on Sep 8, 2008 1:21 PM EDT reply actions

No. 24 is among the most famous of ‘those who got away’. Thank Pal Hal and the Miami Screaming Eagles….

For No. 23, his career wasn’t a series of highs and lows, it was just one long, long low.

No. 25 – What kind of dog was Flash?

For No. 22, can’t think of anything else other than giving his name….

24 – Bernie Parent winning the Vezina?
26 – Was it Krusher?

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.

by PPP on Sep 8, 2008 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes to both.

Grant Fuhr was part of a Jennings winner in 1993-94 with Hasek, but he was traded mid-year ’92-93. Parent was traded before the start of ’73-74.

Krushelnyski was the one who figured out that Godynyuk was Ukrainian and not Russian (as advertised – what, aren’t ALL Soviets Russian?!?!?) and could thus speak with him.

by 1967ers on Sep 8, 2008 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

1990-91 roster

Look for someone with lots of vowels

Krushelnyski only has 3 vowels, 4 if you count “Y”, out of 12. A 33% ratio. Damphousse has 4 vowels out of 10 (40 %), Cluade Loiselle has 4 out of 8 (50 %) and Iafrate has 4 out of just 7 letters(57 %). The most vowels in a last name however, belongs to Gilles Thibaubeau with 6 out of 10 (60 % vowel-composition!)

Wait till you see question 47….

by 1967ers on Sep 8, 2008 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

For No 23, I’m tellin’ ya, his career was low.

Low, low, low.

Just real low.

Ron Low?

“YES!!!”

OK – we’re down to Denis Dupere and John Bassett. I will let people decide which name goes where…. :)
