FTB - A Flip Flop Flip Flop Flip

Dearest readers,

You may have noticed that a caption contest began last night. You have all week to submit as many funny captions as you would like, and on Sunday I'll pick my favorite without PPP's help because I'm a big boy and wear big boy pants. In between now and then, I'll photoshop some of the entries, but that doesn't mean they're my favorites, only that they were able to be photoshopped.

Lot of good content today, we're doing our player preview pre-lunch in preperation for the next issue of Inspirational Leaf Comics this afternoon.

On to the links:

Your site wasn’t in my RSS reader. Weird. Problem solved, you’ll be included in all future FTBs.

(sniff chorus)

Sundin is not a flip-flopper. Sundin chooses his words carefully. He will not be a rental player for a “contending team”. However, that does not contradict his “dream” to retire as a Maple Leaf. He can play a half-season with the Leafs and still be true to his words.
This has been the plan since last May. Sundin wanted to stay but Cliff had some work to do first. No one said anything, ‘cause they didn’t know if it would be possible, but basically, Sundin has done Cliff and Leaf fans a huge favor by letting Montreal, Vancouver, and anyone else too stupid to read between the lines, believe they actually have a shot at him. The Habs and Canucks only attempted to improve their hockey club, while Cliff was actually doing it.
We need to thank Sundin for stringing along the entire league with this beautifully elaborate hoax.

He will definitely come back – unless of course he doesn’t. :)

Heard on the radio this morning a report out of Sweden that Mats said if he was going to retire, he’d have done it already. Of course, we also heard that report out of Sweden that Mats had already signed somewhere or other.

Does Steve Simmons write for a Swedish paper as well?

I’m not holding my breath. I hope he just retires instead of screwing us out of a lottery pick.

(Unless we’re in 6th place or higher come December in which case bring on Sundin.)

Not much to do except wait and see how it plays out. I still hope he returns, though it would probably be counterproductive if the hope is to draft a Schenn again or a Tavares. I’d like him to get that 1000th point in a Leaf uniform.

by 1967ers on Sep 4, 2008 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions

By my count Mats Sundin has 1,057 points in a Leafs uniform.

His 1000th point was a goal scored November 3rd in Montreal.

So the playoffs don’t count?

Spoken like a true Leafs fan…

I’m sure he potted a few in the Blue and White Games, too. ;)

by 1967ers on Sep 4, 2008 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

hahaha a real Leafs fan tells their opposing fans that ONLY the playoffs count (see: senators, ottawa).

I guess in that case he has no need to come back in order to chase his 1000th regular season point.

by PPP on Sep 4, 2008 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m just saying, it seems a little weird that when we talk about career points or whatever, it’s common to ignore postseason points.

Who cares about the regular season though? A play who goes 82GP 50G 50A 100P in the regular season is nowhere near as valuable as a player who goes 21GP 12G 12A 24P in the postseason.

No, I see the logic. Of course the guy that goes 12-12-24 in the playoffs doesn’t get a chance to do that unless that first guy puts up 100 points.

I know you want to post that picture ;) Do it.

screwing us out of a lottery pick

Mats would like the team rebuild and improve. To this end, he’s willing to take half a season off, vastly increasing their chances of landing a solid pick. He understands the situation and he’s given Cliff no grief about it whatsoever. Pure class. He deserves better.

by general borschevsky on Sep 4, 2008 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

hahahaha why can’t he just tell us that that is his plan!

Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.

by PPP on Sep 4, 2008 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Because then Montreal and Vancouver (also Rangers and Flyers) might be making offers on players like Hagman and Grabovski, driving up the market, instead of holding out for a player who has completely hoodwinked them. A perfect little distraction.

by general borschevsky on Sep 4, 2008 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re overthinking this.

by Chemmy on Sep 4, 2008 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe, maybe not. I think people are under-estimating Cliff’s ability to be bad-ass poker player. For too long Toronto had gotten used to a thoughtless, reactionary style of managing from JFJ, with no stategy or cunning. Being a big league GM means being smarter then the next guy.

I don’t think I’m overthinking this – I think maybe I’m just being super-optimistic about the results.

by general borschevsky on Sep 4, 2008 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Update: Cox says he never flip-flopped.

Ignore that his argument makes no sense. The bigger question is who tipped him off? There’s absolutely zero chance that he reads fan blogs, or even the commens on his own articles, and his e-mail address is a fake one he set up so that he could create fictional Leaf fans to talk about.

So… Who is the mole?

MUAHAHAHA

$100 says that he wrote that article after I tried to submit a comment (surprise surprise it was moderated!) that linked to your flip-flop post.

That’s awesome. We’re driving the narrative!

It’s beyond my imagination how he could compare McCabe to Boyle. He must be doing it intentionally to piss you guys off.

by lb71 on Sep 4, 2008 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

You read my mind. Driving into work this morning I tried to figure out how he could compare the situations but the rage was making me veer towards pedestrians taking their time crossing the street so I had to think of something else.

they were obsessed with moving McCabe for public relations reasons

Public realtions? More like, everyone in the dressing room relations reasons.

McCabe and Boyle aren’t exactly the same commodity. But they’re not completely different, either
Maybe there wasn’t more out there. But maybe there was

Aaaaaaahhhhhhhh!

why would the team be offering Mats Sundin multiple years at $7 million or more

Whoah. Stop. Does that say, multiple years? That’s not what we’ve been talking about and it sure doesn’t seem likely. Where did that come from? Is there a source on that?

by general borschevsky on Sep 5, 2008 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Multiple Years = Bullshit

Cox goes back to his “unnamed sources” well in order to draw up something The Fraud would be proud of I bet.

He’s right, McCabe and Boyle aren’t the same player. Boyle is better.
