Reading the Tea Leafs: Jason Blake

Following on the success of two other dormant series PPP and I have decided that in order to fill the gap in NHL news that we'll take a look at each of the current Leafs, possible Leafs on the Marlies, and prospects. We'll recap their performance last year, what we can expect from them, and how they can win our hearts (hint: signing the contract was a good first step...unless your name is Bryan McCabe). We have no idea how long of a series this will end up being or how consistent it will be but with two of us expect it to only be half as half-assed and twice as timely.

That's literally the only time I didn't wish Jason Blake died of cancer all season. (DTFC son.)

Marital Status
Chemotherapy. Editor's Note: With his wife Sarah he has a 6-year-old daughter, a 4-year-old son and an 8-month-old daughter. Is it any wonder he couldn't make a good hockey decision to save his life.

Former Leaf he'd have to play like in order to be christened a deity
Mats Sundin, Doug Gilmour, Jesus' second coming.

Biggest Question Marks
Jason Blake had a 4.5% shooting percentage last year. He put up decent points and his PP numbers look good, but Toronto acquired him in need of a sniper and he didn't deliver. I'm being hard on the guy but honestly he's got the skill set, and if he picks better shots he could be enormous this year.

Check out the brutal PK numbers, in case you missed them. Wow.

2007-2008 Summary
Jason Blake got cancer and he also came down with leukemia. 4.5% shooting percentage? Ugh. 52 points for $4m looks like a steal today though, thank God there was a lockout to keep salaries down.

Projected 2008-2009 role/team
Obviously Blake will be on the Leafs roster. If he shoots 4.5% again I'll kill him myself so I'd expect him to either have a better season than last year or an extravagant funeral.

Seriously though, Blake has some wheels. If he can play smarter, he could play with Hagman and Tlusty as a really fast goal scoring line. It's too bad it all centers around Blake taking good shots instead of seeing if he can score through the goalie's chest.

I'd draw an interesting parallel to J.D. Drew. Drew came to the Red Sox and sucked his first season, mostly because his son was in a full body cast all season and cried everytime Drew left the house. Blake came down with cancer and I think anyone here can understand how that would screw someone up. Jason Blake has a lot to prove to the city of Toronto and he's going to get the minutes to do it this year. Let's hope he can pull a J.D. Drew and go from being called washed up to being a hero.

It would be if he meant it.

Blake came down with cancer and I think anyone here can understand how that would screw someone up.

I thought comparing him to Nancy Drew was more offensive.

I guess I was trying to mimic the JD Drew story arc, of “man that guy is a bum and a washed up asshole” followed by “oh wait that guy is amazing, last season was ruined by some personal problems”.

If it makes you feel better I just cancelled an all-expenses paid first class trip to the Bahamas to be with my stepfather who’s recovering from brain surgery.

Don’t get me wrong Chemmy…I was only offended because you compared a Leafs player to a no-good, loafing, greedy…actually, Nancy might actually be the perfect comparison for Blake after all.

Drew is a beast.

Thanks Chemmy.

As you can tell, I’m not a fan of JD…but if Blake reacts to Sundin’s departure the way Drew did when Ortiz went down, I’ll be pretty happy.

Blake started to look like the player of old near the end of last season, but if the cancer doesn’t dog his performance again this year then age might. With the game he plays, I’d be surprised if he actually plays the length of that contract.

Yeah, he could be a contributor this year, but his contract is way too long, and was way too long before he got leukemia.

4.5? I’ll trade him for Tyler “What do I do with the puck” Arnason any day of the week. His 5.6 was almost a career low (he had 0.0% in 19 Senators games) and he sucks at pretty much all the other aspects of the game?
Speed? HA
Scoring touch? I trump you, sir
Defense? He doesn’t even know which net to score in
Okay, he can set up some nice passes. But no 1.75M $ passes by any means.

Last year he wasn’t the only player who sucked. He was awful but I’m willing to start with a clean slate this year.

We all have our burdens to bear

We know all about the hilarity of Arnason from his sens days.

I expect a big turnaround this year from Blake.

This American will be back in minors long before American Thanksgiving

JFJ made so many monstrous blunders but this one has to be the worst. Signing a 34 (now 35) to a five year contract coming off a career year was like watching a train wreck. And he blames Maurice for his sub par season. Real class act. The bottom line is he has only played for bad to medicore teams and has only managed 8 NHL seasons because he is a truly a minor leaguer. Defensively is awful and has no offensive creativity.

I looked at the leafs salary structure on www.nhlscap.com. Now that we’ve rid ourselves of Mccabe, Tucker, and Raycroft the only real eyesore on the Leafs payroll is Blake’s contract. Kubina’s salary is okay since he will now get top minutes with Kaberle. Colaicovo is a waste too but I guess MLSE did well in getting rid of the bulk of the stiffs on the roster.

I’m with you up until the Colaiacovo thing. He doesn’t get paid enough money to be a waste.
