Eklund Plagiarises LA Kings Beat Writer
I'm going to break my rule about linking to Eklund. KingsCast at HFBoards broke this story, I'm passing it on to you.
Eklund posted today (screenshot for posterity):

Here's a link to a .pdf of Eklund's page, in case his site mysteriously changes soon. His unnammed LA source is actually Kings beat writer Rich Hammond, who wrote:
"The names? Anaheim's Mathieu Schneider is one the Kings are seriously considering. Other names under consideration would be San Jose's Kyle McLaren, Florida's Karlis Skrastins, Nashville's Greg de Vries, St. Louis' Jay McKee and Pittsburgh's Darryl Sydor. There's one more name out there that might surface as a real option in the next couple days, but as always these talks are pretty fluid."
In the comments on Hammond's blog, the following exchange took place:
gary said:
Congrats on being a hockeybuzz source!!!!
[eklund link]
hahaha... sold your soul to the devil did ya Rich?Rich Hammond said:
Wow, you've got to be kidding me. That's just completely shameless on his part.
To summarize, Eklund would rather type "an LA source" than "Rich Hammond" and would rather plagiarise another hockey writer than toss someone a link. You can read what other people wrote for only $10 a month over at Hockeybuzz.com!
EDIT:
Eklund offered an explanation for why the post disappeared in the middle of the night:
I was obviously largely offline from around 5pm on, as a very serious family situation kept me from even seeing the error until a few minutes ago.
Unfortunately Kukla isn't buying it:
Hmmm, but it must have not been too serious, since he was at HF Boards at 6:30pm last night (catch the link early, the time/date will change on his next visit).
Now with image!
Thanks to colonel_korn for the tip.

Wow
That is stunning. I can’t believe people send him $10 to read more stolen information.
And the advertisers? Dude, he’s a fraud and you pay him?

Wow. Stunning. I don’t pay any attention to Eklund or Berger, even when other people are talking about how bad they are ’cause I just never read them ever. But this is beyond bad. Lazy and stupid and horrible manners should not be permitted in any profession. Someone needs to do something – but, what?
Hey, PPP said what I was gonna say!

The sad part is that he is held as ‘the’ hockey blogger for the Professional Writers something or other association and he gives us all a horrible name.

According to a Barilkosphere blogger, “he is held as ‘the’ hockey blogger for the Professional Writers something or other association and he gives us all a horrible name.”

Yet another
example of how pathetically enormous Dwayne’s head is. I bet if you searched hard enough, you could identify his other “sources” as more plagiarism or completely fabricated bullshit.
The only thing I can give the guy credit for is recognizing the business opportunity in spoonfeeding ridiculous crap to teenage hockey fans who spend the majority of their day in front of a computer. Again, pathetic.

My LA source informs me that talks between your head and your desk are strained at best, and one way or another, this things gonna “bust wide open” and that “something’s gonna give.” This could go down as soon as this evening, there’s no way of knowing. Much much more coming, check back later.

I always assumed that 50% of his “sources” was just his RSS feed of real hockey reporting sites. But I always assumed he’d be smart enough to rewrite what he stole.

Wasn’t there a previous controversy with one of the Leafs bloggers on hockeybuzz “borrowing” from somebody else? I think the explanation ended up being that somebody else had access to the blog to post content, and apologies were issued.
Combined with Eklund’s previous explanation of his fake bio (that there were multiple Eklunds at one point so the bio was a combination), I’m sure the excuse here will wind up being that there’s actually a second Eklund running around, and that the real one would never do such a thing.

RSS Feeds
I had a problem a few years back with a hockey web-site in Ottawa subscribing to my RSS feeds. They would change the headline, strip my name off the post and re-run my content as their own. I think they were doing it to David at Hockey Analysis and a few other sites too (they had a series of .kickass.com domains). None of their sites are around any more…
The only thing I can give the guy credit for is recognizing the business opportunity in spoonfeeding ridiculous crap to teenage hockey fans who spend the majority of their day in front of a computer. Again, pathetic.
Oooh, with a little tweaking I think I just found a new summary for my blog.

Having people co-opt content has been a big problem for the entire SBN network. Some site in Italy was copying my stuff once upon a time.

Yeah, there were two incidents and apologies and explanations were offered and accepted. However, Eklund, in his infinite wisdom did not allow either the explanation or apologies to be posted to the site. Instead, he deleted the offending articles from the site.

Really? I’d never heard this.
My favourite part of his old bio was how he scored a job working for the Quebec Nordiques as an anglophone American student at McGill. Ever seen a sign that he could speak French?
The Habs maybe. The Nordiques? Never. Of course, the Nords don’t exist, per se, so who was going to validate it? How much of the staff made it to Colorado?

My incident was handled quietly. HS/HS’ is probably still up on their website.
I actually kind of regret not making Eklund’s participation a bigger issue. The writer’s side was understandable and well handled but Eklund’s was just shifty.

Explanation
I was not at all aware of Rich’s story and only wish I had known my source was referencing the column in his email to me. Unfortunately, I was obviously largely offline from around 5pm on, as a very serious family situation kept me from even seeing the error until a few minutes ago. I feel awful and I have had a back and forth with Rich where I apologized for the mishap.
Kukla shows that it couldn’t have been that bad of an emergency if he was on the HF boards at 630pm.

I too am guilty..
I plagiarized a silly poem once from a Cracked magazine, for a 3rd grade writing assignment. I got a frowny-face and “SEE ME” mark. I should have plagiarized from a better magazine, like Mad.
Anyway, that was 3rd grade and I knew it was wrong to do even then! Thankfully my life of white collar crime ended there and I moved on to grand larceny and light treason.

No kidding. Even little kids know that you shouldn’t do it. I would love an advertiser to smarten up and drop his ass.

I’m actually a little surprised this hasn’t been picked up in any more mainstream media. This guy has made a lot of enemies over the years.

Mainstream = Lazy
Maybe Rich Hammond can get his paper to make a huge stink about it but otherwise I am not actually that surprised.

The fact that the reporter in question getting “bit” is in LA probably doesn’t help matters.. If it had been someone in a hockey hotbed there would be a lot more stink and the dogpile would be on!
Of course, not even Eklund can be that dumb to rip off someone like Berger or the Coxmaster.. Or can he?

I’d kill for that to happen. Of course, Cox plagiarizes his own stuff almost every article.
