Then… you can leave as late as 6:30 and still have enough of a safety buffer (barring disasters) to getting there on time… I am usually out the door by 7am and I get to work between 8 and 8:15 depending on traffic in time for my 8:30 start time.

Funny story
When I was in Vancity, my aunt was complaining it was too cold (between -5 to 2 degrees) so they cranked their house thermostat up to like 25… I was so warm at night I ended up sleeping without blankets… and I still ended up waking up in the middle of the night soaked in my own sweat.
At my house, we keep the thermostat at a pleasant 16 degrees although we’ll occasionally bump that up to as much as 18 if it’s freezing enough

Deathclaws
Not sure if you dudes mentioned this, but the technique for dealing with these fuckers is to build the dart gun and shoot them with it first every time you see one. It cripples their legs so they can’t jump at you and slash your face apart. So you can just leisurely backpedal and shoot them in the face with the combat shotgun or whatever.
Also selling kids to the slavers just flat-out rules.

I tried the rock-it (had to get the “build all weapons” achievement because I am an achievement ho) and I was unimpressed. Perhaps because my big guns skill was lacking.
The dart gun is SOOOOOO deadly though.. it does good amounts of damage and anything you hit has both legs crippled so they can barely hobble over to you. Making them easy to finish off with whatever else you might carrying! I recommend the blackhawk or lincoln’s repeater..

the exciting thing is that...
although this is coming from Dreger on TSN, and not hockeybuzz or something, 98% of the time, unless it’s McKenzie reporting it, the media is wrong…
so, who knows. Maybe Burke is kicking the tires on this one. He’s big, young, skilled and fights. Sounds like Burke’s kind of guy…

do not like figuring out structure. We have three times as many structural engineers as architects (well, more, as I’m the only one this week and next) and for some reason, I have to figure out what it should look like!

Karina – have you read Sixteen Acres: Architecture and the Outrageous Struggle for the Future of Ground Zero ?
It’s a great inside look at the so-called battle between the Starchitechts as they compete to redesign the World Trade Centre.
For me, one of the most compelling part was long after the final design had been chosen, competitions won and surrounding monuments finalized and the structural engineers show up. They completely transform the building, design, zoning plans – everything. They even move the building to another part of the site and rotate it something like 30 degrees.
As a complete outsider to this world, I found it really fascinating to get a glimpse of that world…

Wow, that's an ugly last sentence
I meant, as an outsider to the world of architecture, design and structural engineering, it was fascinating to get an inside look at how this one project was completed.
I don’t know if that’s how Skidmore usually works, but it the level of input and hands on work from the engineers and construction teams was not what I expected.

hah
no, I haven’t read the book, but I’m familiar with the process you’re describing.
It’s pretty much typical of most architecture firms, with a few exceptions, such as Santiago Callatrava, who is a structural engineer along with being an architect.
When a competition is won, typically the architect has just a very rudimentary design done. The aesthetic and “feel” of the building will be shown, but it really has to get down to design development and detail design before you really know what the building looks like. For me, I like to really know a lot about those details so that if I ever do initial design, I can draw upon that to make it realistic. Unfortunately, a lot of the time the architect who does the intitial design doesn’t see the project through to construction and never learns what works, so they keep on creating these images of buildings that can never be built. It’s one of the things that frustrates me the most in my field, and that really got to me in school. I could look at some of these buildings people who design in class and get an A for, knowing full well that it was impossible to build (or completely missed the point of the project where we were told that there would be a very limited budget) and would be incredibly frustrated because I see no point in even doing something like that. To me, it’s an utter waste of time. Architects come from the tradition of the Master Builder, where you would have spent 20+ years learning all the building trades before being allowed to design a building. But now, we put people through a few years of school, and while the process is quite rigorous, the system is still pumping out these people who have no concept of reality. So when the public see these high profile competitions and wonder why the building looks nothing like what they expected… that’s why.

The frustration you describe reminds me of my reactions to the work of Diller + Scofidio + Renfo. I saw one of their shows at the Whitney in New York and it actually made me inexplicably grumpy.
A few years later I read a profile of them in the New Yorker and I realized that they just operate in a way that’s very far removed from my understanding of what space, buildings and design should, might or even could be. For instance, they desinged the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and they hid the front door. I mean, WTF?
Admittedly their work on the high line in New York is really cool though…

near as I can tell, they’ve barely built anything that’s an actual permanent building. Case in point, there is definitely a place for architects such as these, but why spend all that time getting lisenced to just theorize and see so little realized?

They got their start doing artistic installations and building for modern dance performances. I don’t mean to be a philistine here, but I think that’s a good indication of their asthetic.
I know Diller also teaches at Princeton, not sure about the other two partners…

they all seem
to teach at prestigous (wow can’t spell that) institutions.
I like their aesthetic, it’s just that I would never be happy primarily being a paper architect. I like to see things realized, I like to go on site and discuss with the contractor how something that I want to look a certain way has to be built to accomplish that.
I love reading theories and looking at paper architects, it’s just that becoming a lisenced architect is so much work, it seems like a waste when someone does that and then spends their years theorizing on how things should be.
I guess I just feel that you can be pushed to be innovative moreso when you’re faced with real world circumstances than just your own cognitive abilities. Architecture is so sophisticated now, the idea of the master architect who can figure it all out is completely out-dated. “Starchitects” are a false portrayal of what the job entails nowadays, and while I do admire the work of many of them, I wish it was more apparent to the public that it is an entire team required to create those buildings, and without them all those buildings would ever be are sketches on paper (or napkins, if you’re Libeskind).
I’m just far more practical than a lot of my peers…

I’ve always been really interested in architecture, but I’ve had no real exposure to the actual design or build process. Until I read that 16 acres book, I had no idea how hands on the engineers and construction guys are.
It makes a lot of sense, but it certainly doesn’t jibe with the lone genius perspective the media and cultural critics like to throw around.
I was fortunate enough to go behind the scenes at Gehry’s AGO here in Toronto (one of my clients was a part of the design-build team) and as much as I love the building and the design, I could feel the tension between the various teams of people, all of whom wanted/needed things done a certain way that sometimes could be in conflict with the needs/wants of other teams.
It’s something that had never occurred to me prior to that visit.
I was also really disappoitned in Rem Koolhaus’ library in Seattle that I had read so many good things about. It seems to work as a library but it struck me as not working in or being representative of its environment/locale. Perhaps I have the wrong approach, but I don’t think of the pacific northwest as being about poured concrete, low slung day-glo plastic chairs and bad flourescent lighting…
On the flip side, this context of place and functionality is something that Renzo Piano seemed to just nail with his work on the Pierpoint Morgan in New York.

Renzo Piano
would have to qualify as one of my favourite architects right now. He’s done some really amazing things, and yet doesn’t get the exposure of Gehry and Liebskind. What blew me away the most was I saw his design for some science labs which are built into the side of a hill, and make use of natural lighting because that helps the study of whatever’s going on there. I wish I could remember what it was… I should pick up a book about him.
But yes. Part of the architect’s job is to be on site, to coordinate when things get done, and mediate disputes. A LOT. The general contractor does this as well, but the architect’s word is supposed to be the final say on the situation, and to do that you really have to understand the complexities of what’s going on. It’s that area that really interests me, my last job I was doing that a lot, despite my young age, and I loved it. This one I’ll get into that as soon as we have projects being built. It’s an amazing process.

I’m sick of all the negative stuff on the media these days.. Economic crisis, environmental collapse, olympic condo building.. I’m on a complete major media blackout starting now. I figure it’ll make me happier if I don’t have to read/listen/see all this crap that doesnt really matter to me for the most part anyway.
Sports, tech and gaming news will remain unaffected!

Stantec
Buys out Jacque Whitford, an environmental consultant of 40 offices and 1700 employees and the next week they start laying off people within Stantec’s own environmental group who have been here for lord-knows how many years
I wasn’t confused, but it reminded me that I work for a heartless and faceless corporation whose only goal and concerns is to appease shareholders

Its not stupid
Its just heartless
I know why they did it, they promised Jacque Whitford that if they were bought out, Stantec would not lay off anyone as part of the deal, the thing is, environmental is a relatively small niche in the market, and there’s no room in Stantec to have that many people in the environmental group, so only solution is to lay off our own guys one week before Christmas.

I blame the media
On the worsening of the economy, notice how the economy only gets worst when they say it will get worst? Why do people bail out on their stocks and investments? Because some snooty reporter said they will go down, so people freak out and start selling etc etc etc.
Anyhoo I’m not concerned either way.

If you’re hunting for interesting gifts, check out http://www.magic-pony.com
They have some really neat stuff, everything from lapel pins up to that rocking chair “thing” in a clockwork orange (really!)

this is going to come out sounding wrong...
so i apologize pre-emptively.
I live in a laregely hispanic area, so most everything around here is geared towards that. Nothing wrong with that, just, being born and raised in Canada, I have zero frame of reference for things. not saying it’s uncomfortable or that i hate it, it’s just not for me.
i love big cities, and cultural diversity. where i’m at, it’s a different culture than i was raised in, but it’s not diverse.
We’ve looked a few times at moving to the bay area to be closer to her family, but we could never afford it…

You were
spot on about the sky tram being a stain on Richmond, the tracks are just above the ground, but not high enough that they’re outta sight but low enough to block 80% of the view with giant plain slabs of concrete
that and the inability of 99% of the population in Richmond not knowing how to bloody drive… and I thought Montreal was bad

Yeah if they went below grade there they’d be underwater because the whole place is just a sandy river delta. It’ll all dissolve in the next big shaker, probably.
The crappy driving is also a cultural thing, with so much of the population direct transplants from hong kong. It’s not a racial thing, they just never learned to drive properly. It scares the hell out of me to see the chinese run driving schools too..
