Van-sanford-front

Sanford, anyone?

Is it wrong that his 2.59 GAA and .906 save percentage make my nether regions tingle?

FAIL

I just saw after I posted this that Karina already posted about it.

Epic fail.

I believe it was designed by a fan. Pity. I was hoping he would have chosen this instead:

that's his old one

his new one, which was designed by a fan, is an orca’s open mouth.

So, what are the teams that you wouldn’t get a goalie from?

  • Minnesota
  • Columbus
  • Vancouver

Anyone else?

maybe....

Sanford had injury troubles in St. Louis, but still put up some half decent numbers….

Yes

Little bit of an oversight eh?

As a Left Coaster

Sanford’s numbers look better than he does on the ice. The two goals he let in last night were no better than the ones LaBarbera let waft past him. He would fix a goaltending situation as about as well as Willie Mitchell would fill an offensive-defenseman position.

I’ve always been a fan of Willie Mitchell.

No, because Sanford was one of JFJ’s big hopes in St. Louis. From a February 2006 profile of JFJ:

Ferguson had less luck with goaltenders. He was bullish on goalies Brent Johnson and Curtis Sanford. Sanford is playing well for the Blues, but after five years in the minors he remains an uncertain commodity. Johnson caught on with Washington this year as a backup.

WIth the bizarre exception of Dominic Moore, everything JFJ touched is cursed. I want no part of it.

But we should look at this comparatively. Sanford is obviously not a top-flight goalie, but is he better than CuJo right now? Most definitely yes. If the Leafs aren’t promoting Pogge, which I’m not in favour of right now anyway, Sanford isn’t a horrible option.

by bkblades on Jan 14, 2009 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

REPEAT AFTER ME:

NO BAND AID FIXES.

Curtis Sanford does not improve our team in the long run. In fact he probably worsens it by making our high draft pick harder to attain. Curtis Sanford is not the goalie that will lead us to success. He will not ever have trade value. Leave him on the garbage pile.

Any possibility that getting a semi-decent backup might push toskala, and allow the leafs to showcase vesa in order to pump his trade value?

I guess it hinges on toskala actually giving a crap, though. Damn.

by LeafFanInVan on Jan 14, 2009 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

Toskala sucks. Toskala will help us trade up to a high draft pick by letting goals in better than he would by being trade bait.

but

I think the Isles still have a leg up on us.
I have visions of them drafting Tavares and him pulling a Lindros…

by Karina on Jan 14, 2009 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

That’s a no-win, because do you really want to get a whiner like that who refuses to play for the team that drafts him? But then other teams would scoop him otherwise.. Argh!

by LeafFanInVan on Jan 14, 2009 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

A la...

Blake Wheeler… Good thing he went to the east coast… That miserable puke..

Heh

Wheeler was considered a risky pick by the Yotes, wasn’t he?
I think that if Tavares whines, Burke’ll pass.

by Karina on Jan 14, 2009 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

I think Phoenix drafted Wheeler out of high school, pressured him to skip college hockey and then jerked him around on contract negotiations, so that when he realized he could be a UFA if he just played another year of college hockey he took that opportunity and went to Boston because he’s good friends with Kessel.

Not sure what happened with the contract.

I know they gave him a max entry level offer, but he left for less money. Either way, when you say you want to “Play in a hockey market” where “people know about hockey” you’re going to annoy the real fans there. I don’t mind that much because I think he’s dumb, but there are definitly people looking to put him out of action on March 5th.

Honestly I think most of the reason he left was to play with Kessel. They were inseperable on and off the ice in college.

(They both got mono at the same time in college.)

I completely agree. Sanford isn’t any better than Vesa, probably worse, so it would be a complete water-tread. Not worth an asset.

meh, no need to get a stop gap unless Joseph retires and they refuse to do the 1A 1B goalie deal with pogge

I agree, let Toskala and Cujo keep embarrassing themselves.

I would like to second

Chemmy’s point. I completely agree with not signing anyone that will not be a contributing player 3 or 4 years down the road. Although I do choose to make this point in a non yelling, non jammies wearing way.
