FTB – Justin Time For Pogge!
Editor's Note: Here's a final guest FTB. We'll have one more long piece up this afternoon and then it's time for the Eliminator.
Sure, that title may look corny, and potentially lame, but I like to think there’s a certain level of charm there, too. The Leaf brass is keeping its promise of giving Justin Pogge more time with the big club after the All Star Break, starting with tonight’s game at the Wild. He’ll likely hand it off to Toskala again Thursday against the Avs, but it’s nice to see him back up in the NHL. Looks like the future is now for Pogge. Best of luck! Here are today’s links.
- Steve thinks the Leafs are rushing Pogge just a little. I think I’ve got something to do the next time I’m in Huntsville, Alabama.
- The General, in between hating on the All Star Game and Skills Competition, finds time to point out how awesome Luke Schenn is.
- Gus over at Maple Leafs Hot Stove offers up a scenario where Daniel Briere would become a Leaf. Briere doesn’t appear to age physically, so this might be a great move.
- TSM tells us about the microscope Pogge’s about to be put under, Killer’s potential deception, and the lack of juicy Leaf trade rumours…Wait, did I really just write that last part?
- The Leaf blue line is about to get a boost. Someone’s bound to cream…uh…Dammit! I was sure I could name ONE guy on the Wild!
PPP Update:
- Did you know that sports writing stinks throughout Ontario and not just Toronto? It's true. And now Kim Jorn goes back into his cryogenic freeze until May.
- MF37 finds an interesting article by Jeff Blair. Too bad he didn't bother writing it.

If we have learned nothing else, we’ve learned that we are the team that struggling teams and players get back in the saddle against.

MIN isn’t a bad team. They have games in hand on 7th and 8th place in the West.

Yeah
But they are doing it on the back of guys that don’t get much exposure on TSN now that Demitra is gone and Gaborik is out.

Any word on if Raycroft will get the start on Thursday?

Should this happen, I can’t think we’ll get a better nomination for ‘Low Point of the Season’

who really cares if this deal solidifies another pick, while a player like Briere could come in and electrify season ticket holders (an item Burke mentions with regularity, the need to satisfy season’s ticket holders)
The comment that the Leafs need to satisfy season ticket holders is an absolute joke. The team is terrible and if the Leafs took every single season ticket away from its owner and offered it for sale this afternoon, there’d be none left tomorrow morning.

I think it is a personal joke on Burke’s part because there is no way that he thinks he is satisfying them by making a move that electrifies them but does not deliver a Stanley Cup.

I would honestly quit my job today and move to Toronto tomorrow if I acquired season tickets to the Leafs.

I couldn’t resist Jeff Blair’s mess of an article today:

FIELD TRIP
Hey guys,
I think we’re going to go on a field trip during the game day open thread tonight, be there or be square! Bring a bagged lunch and make sure to hold hands with your buddy so you don’t get lost.

It better not be the box factory again. That was some weak sauce.

I can’t go. Make some dick jokes in my honour, ok?
Making stuff up since real Leafs news is far too depressing
Probably the box factory, to be honest.

[During the Box Factory tour…]
Tour Guide: This is the most popular room on the tour.
Milhouse: It looks just like the other rooms.
Tour Guide: Yes, but with one important difference!
[He looks over to a pipe and some wire sticking up out of the floor.]
Tour Guide: Oh, they took that out. Yes, it is just like the other rooms.

I come from pretty much the only town in England that doesn’t have any interesting history (unless you have a serious Jones for petrochemicals) – so I’m pinning everything on this field trip to make up for all the crummy ones I used to go on in school.

The last thing we need is to hear from Mrs. Mattblack because her son has been missing for three weeks.

Interesting
I lived in Manchester (Salford, actually) in 99 and 2000. I wish I had known there was another Leafs fan in town.

I spent a summer in Huntsville once. Nice folks, and they know how to BBQ.

I've been to Huntsville
It’s a pretty high-tech town, lots of defense contractors (big army missile range nearby, the Saturn V rockets were built there) and Telecomm stuff. It’s kind of an oasis of intelligence and literacy in Alabama, apparently. Not surprising they have some decent college stuff going on there.
Fun fact: it was #4 on the “places to nuke” list of the USSR after DC, NYC and NORAD.
Yeah, they have the space camp there too.
They also had the AA affiliate of the Oakland A’s back then. I got to see a few future stars, although for some odd reason they were all much skinnier back then.
I also saw Michael Jordon live for the only time in my life — with the Birminghan Barons.

I went to the museum where that space camp is – it’s pretty cool! It has a real Saturn V rocket on its side, it’s pretty amazing how large it is, really. I think they used it for testing so it was never launched since they mostly get jettisoned and burn up.
Also has a full size shuttle mock up along with a real fuel tank, an an actual A-12 spy plane parked out front.
Pretty neat because I’d probably never have gone to huntsville if it wasn’t for work.. The work part was a total waste of time, but it was an interesting trip otherwise!
