FTB - Lazy Sunday Edition
I'll have more about the Leafs game tonight but wasn't the Canada game a beauty! It didn't help things that Tokarski, contrary to Jared's sidebar, didn't really save at all. Every time Canada built up a head of steam he was able to find a way to let the Russians back into the game. My seats last night (special thanks to Chemmy for trying to throw me under the bus for previous Leaf losses!) were beside the Molson Best Seats in the House which have televisions. We ended up watching the junior game with one eye while keeping an eye on the Leafs. It actually resulted in a pretty funny situation where I cheered Canada's fourth goal before it was announced to the crowd.
After the Leafs' game a group of five or six of us kept watching it until the television was turned off with just over a minute left. We then joined about 50 other fans in the Ice Box crowded around the TVs. When Canada tied it up with 5.4 seconds left the crowd erupted with beer flying. I actually ended up jumping up and down on a senators fan and I wasn't even trying to hurt him. Then, in a move that was so mind-numbingly dumb I thought it was a joke, Air Canada Centre staff decided to turn off the televisions in the Ice Box as the game went to overtime! The Canadianness of the crowd kept things from getting ugly because doing something that stupid could have resulted in some serious trouble.
Luckily, Rogers, of all companies, had a television that they kept on so that about 60 of us could crowd around for the overtime and shootout. Every shot in overtime on the Russian net prompted gasps and every time the Russians ventured towards Canada's net you could hear mumbled "no no no"s from some in the crowd. Finally, during the shootout we erupted four times as Eberle and Tavares slotted home their chances and Tokarski actually managed two saves. Eberle's equalizing goal will likely be among the most replayed ever scored at this tournament and the experience of sharing it with 60 strangers won't be one I'll soon forget.
Links after the jump:
- Alex Tran looks at the Leafs' prospects. Things actually look pretty good.
- Back to the World Juniors, Bruce Ciskie might want to re-watch that clip to see Jimmy Hayes sticking his blade out to hit DiDomenico in the face. And he might want to remember who started the taunting of the benches in that game.
- In case you missed it, this is hands down the funniest fight ever. Stick to scoring tonnes of goals Semin.
- I don't think Habs fans should be ashamed. At least not because some of them decided that it was worth their time to rig the voting process of a useless hockey game. If the NHL wants to make the All-Star game and it's attendant selections (I can't wait to hear some dumb Habs fan crow about Komisarek being an all-star) worthy then they should leave it open only to GMs.
- Big Smoke Sports has...ummm...gone up in smoke :( Luckily, Arch will still be around in the comments and fanposts.
- DGB has some thoughts on last night's game including an astute one of Chris Neil. This is a guy that was always too afraid to fight Domi (excusable) and didn't drop them with Belak (apparently against team rules) and last night avoided Newbury and Hollweg (does he watch hockey?). On a team of gutless wonders he is the king.

Where could one purchase said “sexy pants”?

You can understand why that might confuse me though. I always wear sexy pants.

I’d love to see Semin fight Crosby. Pure cat-fight.

Semin should be the next guest on Jerry Springer. The way those trailer trash women fight looked exactly like he did last night.
I honestly have never seen someone fight like that on the ice before.

You're right PPP
I think I made wrap’s bad books last night when I kept saying I wasn’t impressed with Tokarski’s performance… 2, maybe even 3 of those goals were real softies that he should’ve had no questions asked… those two wide-open goals from the sides were just painful to watch. Thankfully he stepped it up in the shootout although the second save wasn’t particularly hard.
After watching Tokarski in the last 2 games, I’ll have to say he’s one of the weaker goalies we’ve had in the WHJC in the last 5 years or so.

she is so going to kick your ass!
A Toronto sports blog, where we unequivocally and unapologetically support the home team...
Probably
But I can’t deny the truth!! Sorry but Pogge, Price and Bernier were all better than Tokarski, especially in terms of consistency! Tokarski almost reminds me of Toskala… or maybe its cuz their name looks so similar.
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
He has let in some stinkers, especially last night. The one through the five hole, and the final Russian goal, were both Raycroft-esque.
A Toronto sports blog, where we unequivocally and unapologetically support the home team...
Well
I wouldn’t go that far to comparing him to Raycroft… I mean I went as low as Toskala… I fear wrap’s wrath…
"God's in His heaven. All's right with the world." - Robert Browning (1812-1889)
Just to be clear, I was comparing the quality of goals to Raycroft…not Tokarski to Raycroft. Not even I would stoop that low, bro.
A Toronto sports blog, where we unequivocally and unapologetically support the home team...
sorry, but that 5th one is not on Toka at all, that was all on the defense not clearing the puck or the player and totally blocking Tokarskis view of the puck, he had no idea where it was or what to do..
5 hole goal = bad goal, first goal, should have had it.
Others? no chance

he had no idea where it was or what to do.
Hugging the post so that the puck wouldn’t go in short side would have been a good first step.

yeah, he’s got to be hugging it out in that situation.
Toka knows it. He said as much after the game.
That’s what I like about him. He knows that he played like shit and that the team bailed him out, and he an admit as much.
A Toronto sports blog, where we unequivocally and unapologetically support the home team...
probably yeah, but i could see what he was trying to do, he moved at the exact wrong time trying to see around the wall his own D put up.

Are we sure it’s Hayes stick? I heard McGuire say Eric Tancredi (or something like that). If it was Hayes, that might make things interesting in the future for the two potential Leafs.
I can’t remember where but I read it was Hayes’ stick. It would be funnier that way.

Huuuuuuuuuuuge Difference
It was a long time ago but…in case you need your memory refreshed – Price made 34 saves including 12 in overtime. Big difference between that and Tokarski’s performance last night.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
by PPP on Jan 4, 2009 4:28 PM EST up reply actions
yes, there is a huge difference, but not only in the quality of goaltending (price is and was a superior goaltender to the present Toka) but Price also bennifited from a better defensive core, and alot of the shots he faced weren’t of goal scoring quality.
What I ment was, that the goal he did let in in regulation was nothing spectacular and thetwo goals he allowed in the shoot out included a small head fake to easy glove side and a hash marks wrister.
Had he stopped those Toews wouldn’t have had to save Canada’s bacon

Don't Worry
Wrap is only going to kill eyebeleaf and me :P
Canada’s defence is obviously not to the levels of past years but 34 saves in a 2-1 win is a big difference from letting in five including at least two very very suspect goals. Getting beat in a shootout is different than getting beat in the course of a game.
Not to mention that Tokarski’s saves included a post and the worst attempt at going fivehole since Robert Reichel’s penalty shot against Cechmanek.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.

the 5hole goal was terrible yes, but one could argue that Tokarski forced the Russian to make a post shot with good positioning. but whatever.

You aren’t getting it. You are free to write whatever you want but you didn’t need to drag me into it ok? This is where I take issue. I feel picked on. Yeah people associate me with Tokarski which is totally fine, but shit to use me as a literary device just isn’t cool. I know you don’t like Tokarski that’s fine and you are absolutely without question allowed to. But can you grow a sensitivity chip and perhaps some civility and consideration?
So yeah, call me when you are over it.

Or
If Eyebeleaf got angry for real every time that someone mentioned that Jeff Carter had scored another goal not in a Leafs’ uniform.
Or hell, everytime you bastards mention trading Antropov.
Or, how Dominic Moore’s play makes Chemmy look ridiculous.

Was in Ottawa at the game
I flew into Ottawa just to see this game. It was wild. After they tied it, leafs fans were hugging sens fans, even habs fans were embracing. But as we left Scotiabank place, an hour after the game, my brother and I started a Go Leafs Go Chant, that would have made everyone proud.
To top it off, I video recorded the drunken anthem singing after the game

you know, those mocking style gunshots.
BRUP BRUP!!!
brup (urban dictionary)
a single word that is shouted, the “b” and “r” are rolled, coming to a crescendo on the “up”.
1. a call between rude boys to let each other know where they are, much like howling monkeys screaming.
2. something to shout when you’re drunk and want to make a lot of noise.
(shouted out at high volume)

I didn’t update the DTFC that often, you don’t need to shut the blog down because you don’t have anything to say right now.
To be honest, I’d rather see blogs where people only update when they actually have something to say as opposed to people who update just to hear themselves talk.
Of course you’re always welcome to post Fanshots and Fanposts here. ;)

You're right
Perhaps shutting it down isn’t 100% neccessary, but it felt like the right thing to do for now. I can totally see myself opening it back up when I feel the need, but frankly, I’m not sure the need will come creeping back. If I feel the need to write something Leafy, posting a Fanpost here will probably get more reads anyway.
Also, if you asked me a year ago today, I’d’ve listed my two favourite athletes as Mats Sundin and Brett Favre. So, you know… Take that for what it is.
