Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

FTB - Juggernaut Edition

God I love the World Juniors. There is nothing better than watching Team Canada take on the world over the holidays. I like it when it's in Europe because you can wake up, turn on the TV, and watch the games while having a leisurely breakfast with the family. Unfortunately, one thing that is usually missing from those tournaments are the fans which is why the IIHF wants Canada to host the tournament every year. I don't think I like that idea. Aside from the unfairness of having home ice advantage every year there is the issue of revenue splitting that would need to be addressed.

Anyway, here are some links to read while you ponder if the Shimmy for Six will succeed...

Was there not a better picture to be used for the villain? Come on, for someone not familiar with hockey it makes it seem like Fletcher is the villain. What a lousy selection.

One more for the FTB...

Don’t boo Bryan McCabe tonight. Save your wrath for Raycroft.

It’s a brave stance but a little misguided. McCabe deserves more then a few boos. His performance down the stretch last year was disgraceful.

here’s the thing…

1. McCabe did not adept well to the new rules coming out of the lockout.
2. Our defensive depth was incredibly suspect during these points of injury (Woz, Bell, etc…)
3. His defensive gaffes were far more visible when we had to rely on Raycroft to bail him out…

all that said, he waived his contract. not my problem anymore. he never did much to earn my adulation though. i get your Sundin argument, and one day, we’ll all agree with you I think. McCabe…not so much.

there were two seasons out of seven that mccabe was a minus player. say what you want about the statistic, but considering the goaltending we’ve received post lockout, it was a miracle he wasn’t -30 like sheldon souray.

personally, i think the notion that he didn’t adapt to the rules is bogus. but that’s me.

are you blaming him for the lack of defensive depth?

and, yes, his gaffes were more visible in the final, dark days.

but, like you and DGB said (he commented over on my site), he waived his no-trade clause, and always played hard…i’m not saying give him a standing ovation, i’m just saying there’s no need to boo the guy.

DGB also said he wouldn’t boo Raycroft. I told him I wouldn’t either. I’d throw something at him instead.

not blaming him for lack of depth. blaming the lack of depth for the losses incurred when he went down.

that doesn’t mean he’s irreplaceable, it means who we had playing behind him on the depth chart sucked even worse.

as far as raycroft goes…throwing something at him. it’s gotta be pretty big, the guy can’t get in front of a beach ball to stop it.

I think, eyebleaf, that Sundin returns your affection. He truly cares, and it shows. There is a connection between you, the fan, and the performer. McCabe, not so much. I’m not sure what he cares about, but I don’t think it’s hockey fans in Toronto.

by general borschevsky on Jan 6, 2009 10:45 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don’t know, General, I just always thought that McCabe played with a lot of passion. Always played hard for his team, and for his teammates. Like I wrote, he tried to damn hard to live up to that contract. By all accounts, he’s doing well in Florida, out of the pressure.

Agreed

He did play with a lot of passion. What’’s missing is the maturity.

McCabe was awesome for a while. He was a big part of those “Guts and Glory” Leafs that took out the Senators year after year. After he scored the own goal I actually felt sorry for him and started cheering for him more. I’m only sour on him because he really threw in the towel at the end of the year and played like utter crap in the final 2 weeks.

McCabe’s failing was his own stupidity and his complete confidence in his abilities. He never recognized what he needed to do to improve and stubbornly refused to adapt at all.

That idiocy is why I hate him.

It’s a little difficult to try and gain confidence in your abilities when you get booed in your own rink by 19,800 people because they’ve been riled up by idiotic “journalists” like Berger and Cox.

I always like McCabe – along with Tucker and Sundin they seemed like they really actually cared about Toronto and the team and the fans.

by WildWolfdog on Jan 6, 2009 11:29 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Care about the fans?

Seriously? Tucker especially was very adamant about his belief that Leaf fans had no right whatsoever to exhibit any displeasure about McCabe’s terrible play.

And my issue isn’t that he didn’t have confidence in his abilities it’s that nothing that happened from the lockout onwards made him doubt his style of play. Not being embarrassed in Sweden, not being terrible at the Olympics, not being a minus player for the first time in his career, not repeatedly getting called for obstruction, hooking, or tripping. Nothing ever made him think that he should adapt and Tucker and him saw no problem whatsoever with that.

My god, man, you write about me more than I write about Wendel Clark.

I change my mind all the time. And, like a rational grown up, I realize that doing so can have consequences. That includes the way people perceive me. Shrugging your shoulders and saying “Oops, I changed my mind” isn’t some magic wand that gets you off the hook for your stupidity.

I told my wife I’d pick her up at the airport tonight. Now, I could always change my mind and let her walk home. That doesn’t mean she won’t be a little on the cranky side when she gets home.

seriously, you didn’t think Markstrom was diving. i’ll agree he definitely got hit at least once, but his pirouette and flying goalie mask were overly comical.

the first supposed knock on him, it was his own player as you pointed out, and he went apeshit. that kid needs to learn to keep it in check or he’ll never last in the nhl.

Pretty funny the way he went down… he had one leg swept out from under him, most goalies would’ve just tumbled down but he did a beautiful 360 and somehow managed to sent his mask flying. It really looked like the Swedes lost their cool in that game… knee-jerk reaction to everything.

Yea

The Canadians got to him right away and after that he was shakey the rest of the way… and the rest of the Swedes just overreacted everytime a Canadian brushed up against Markstrom and lost their focus.

heres my breakdown of the diving.
First one, Derek Roy style dive.
Second, goaltender interference by Espisito followed by an injury act that would do Ronaldo proud.
Third, incidental contact where neither player saw the other, followed by a Crosby tantrum with a blocker.

No. On the first one, that was totally a flop. The other three were not dives. He got nailed be Della Rovere (very dirty player), and slew footed twice by Esposito. You can argue whether he did it on purporse (I say no) but Markstrom wasn’t diving and having Maguire yell it every ten seconds made me uncomfortable.

if it wasn’t diving, it sure was a sales job.

i sensed a little home team bias. not that Canada was getting all the calls, as Sweden didn’t take too many penalties, but that Canada did get away with quite a bit.

that said, LFIV mentioned rolli yesterday, and that’s the guy i think Markstrom is most like…mask flying off in dramatic fashion, spinning all over the ice….

that was embarrassing.

I think the sales job comes a lot from his flying helmet.

I don’t think it was home team bias in the refs. If anything, Canada got the short end of that stick. But the announcers were making the Swedes sounds like Team Iceland.

Della Rovere

Oh yes THAT was a shamefully dirty hit, he went straight for Markstrom, surprised he wasn’t ejected for that one.

The two Esposito… highly doubt they were intentional, you can tell he was avoiding body contact although I suppose you can argue that he could’ve made a better effort to get his leg tucked back in.

the focus...

was on markstrom. the guy came in as this unbeatable goliath.

a kid playing in the best men’s league not called the NHL. posting sick crazy numbers in the tourney, as he did in the Swedish elite league. that’s who we started the game facing…

he came out looking like an easily rattled kid who will fall down from a light breeze and can’t recover from quick goals mentally.

his stock fell due to his own play. his own play was what was embarrassing. if he hung in there and shook off that first goal, rather than concentrating on getting the refs attention, chances are the game would have been much closer.

Excellent point

Yes he received a handful of dirty hits, no arguments there but the fact that he let himself get that rattled really hurt his stock… with the exception of the Della Rovere hit, the other ones are very standard NHL-fare… maybe they play less rough in the Euro-leagues but from that game you can tell he’s not ready for the physicality of the NHL.

I agree the Espisito hit was avoidable. But Markstroms performance after the hit was shameful and embarassing.
When Markstrom was rushing to the bench by Della rova was as much Markstroms fault as his I think. From the vid angle I’ve seen it looks like he is looking up the ice and probably saw nothing but a flash of yellow coming at him from behind. So he solidified the shoulder. Markstrom Pinballed.

but this is also a team that I don’t think Quinn would ever have built. I loved him when he was here, but it’s a bit easier to see his flaws from a distance. For example, cutting Kane originally and keeping Della Rovere. Kane is a killer player, and can be used in any situation… I felt bad for the guy who got injured, but was glad Kane was on the team.
