Maple Leafs acquire May from Ducks

Brian Burke’s first move is a head scratcher. I guess Deveaux isn’t doing a good enough job for his tastes or that conditional 6th round pick is compensation for tampering with Burke when he was the Ducks’ GM.
Colour me confused and unhappy with this move.

he has a man crush
on May, he’s brought him to 3 consecutive teams now.
I just hope his next move is an informed one, not an emotional a=one.

not just Deveaux...
the burke quote is quite telling…
"We had zero energy at all from any veteran players, to show up and lead the way.
he goes on to talk about the room being quiet and the bench being too quiet during the game.

I thought that was interesting.
But May is the solution???
I think this means there will be bigger changes. Bye-bye established vets.

better not be hagman. best bang for their buck right there. he’s a little like sammi pahlson from the ducks, so maybe burke’ll take a shiine to him…
poni is quiet, stajan could be considered a vet, and he’s quiet to. of course, he wasn’t playing…

I feel like Stajan isn’t as quiet as he seems.
Sure he’s about as effective as Spezza in a scrum, wait…. I take it back. So he not going to win any fights not against Crosby or Spezza (without a spear) but Matt is kind of a wise lad beyond his years.
He’s got a great hockey IQ, and I tend to notice him chirping a lot to his line before draws about positioning and whatnot. But what do I know, right?
Anyway, i agree that him not playing effected his vocal contribution to the team over the last 5. He’s just got to come back and keep making an impact to this team.
Love that lil’ bastard!

Poni and Antro…. I’m scared.

i see kabby sticking around...
until draft day, then it’s bye bye.
poni and antro are gone by the deadline.

Ferraro, for what it’s worth, kept saying that Wilson was yelling at the guys about not retreating and to get in the Panthers’ faces.
I think that my uncle’s theory of that anyone that ever spoke to Fredo will be traded is true. I don’t see anyone sticking around if there are more comments like that one.

I'm glad
I haven’t seen anything from Deveaux. May does have a cup ring, and bringing that to a team that lacks leadership should help. Although I don’t know how much of a leader he was when you have Pronger, Niedermeyer and Selanne on that team….
I’m hoping for a move like the Fedorov trade. That was brilliant (and lucky).

Yeah after the initial shock I’m kind of happy about it, the other so-called tough guys seem incapable of getting in opponents face and making life hard for them.
As long as it doesnt alienate Moore I’m cool with it. Or if we can get a good return of picks for dom it would be great to see him be a roleplayer on a contending team.

Blake has three years after this one on his contract $ 4M per annum.
May is a UFA after this year. Maybe Burke doesn’t care about losing but doesn’t want to see games like last night’s be the way that they do lose.

May gets in the scrum
Last night Deveaux knocked over Cullimore and McCabe was on him immediately, followed right after by Weiss. Cullimore eventually got up and fought Deveaux himself. Deveaux seemed momentarily confused as to who he was fighting against. “Three Panthers to choose from”, says the commentater. Where the hell were his linemates?
Compare that to the clip of Darcy fighting Neil at the Ottawa bench. If that was today’s team, Tucker would be over there by himself fighting the entire Senators team while the Leafs stood around waiting for the 3rd period to begin.

My point is somebody should have grabbed Weiss. Somebody else should have gotten in Cullimore’s way, leaving McCabe to struggle with Deveaux, and then round and round we go, everyone grabs a partner and backs up their mates. Deveaux had 3 guys on him and no one came over a grabbed a Florida sweater. Pitiful. May’ll show’em. If somebody looks at soemone funny – GRAB A SWEATER!!!

I wish…I just noticed a really strong trend of certain players following GMs/coaches around the league.
Fletcher drafted Manderville in Calgary and got him in the Gilmour deal. Keenan had a couple of guys that he seemed to acquire at each stop along the way. After arriving in New York, Sather traded for the entire Oilers organization. Even JFJ went after Khavanov. When it looked certain that Burke was coming, the easy punchline was Brad May.
And here we are.

I think its still up in the air
In a few years I can see MItchell as a solid two forward with some versatility, kind of like a Mike Fisher, thats the high. I could also see him end up like McCaouley where he never really finds his game’s consistently, the low. Either way its far to early to tell.
by Kriv on Jan 7, 2009 3:34 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I can agree with this
Basically, minimal salary for a common player. I don’t see that much offensive potential with Mitchell and he was never highly regarded as a prospect either, but he’s the type of player that all teams should have every year. Not so much because his skill is that essential, but he provides 3rd-4th line duty at a bargain price. As soon as he prices himself out, the Leafs can bring in another to take his place.
Mitchell is young, being his rookie season and all, but karina is right. Mitchell isn’t really a part of the future at his current state, especially if the team manages to keep Moore (though Mitchell does have more offensive flare I think). His value does increase if guys like Ondrus and Earl in the Marlies don’t pan out, but Mitchell doesn’t score that much, doesn’t hit or fight that much, and is by no means a defensive shadow. I don’t see Michell fitting into any of Burke’s hockey player role.

May’s arrival seems to increase the competition for ice time among those who provide “energy” for a living. Nothing like an old fart to outdo his team mates in the shit stirring up dept to put them all to shame. And the price was right. Lets hope he has more moves than Deveaux’s patented " I will hold my opponent at arm’s length and allow him to tire himself in my attempt to intimidate the other team."
