I once went to a wedding and instead of the usual matches/candles other crap gifts you get when you leave, all of the guests were given a cd where every track had some sort of reference to a monkey (Pixies: Monkey Gone to Heaven; Beatles: Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey; Foo Fighters: Monkey Wrench; etc.).

I have no idea what it was all about or why it was done, but it was a pretty cool gift.

it's fascinating...

i love making mixes for my friends. to the more musically inclined ones, i give them blank cd’s with zero information on them. it’s like an easter egg hunt…

still, the idea of a monkey themed mix is highly intriguing…

Disney is really bad… they were brilliant to never have to admit it and still be able to sell these movies whenever they come out of the vault.

What Blurr said, there’s some troubling stuff in Disney’s Peter Pan, but my kids really love it. My daughter went through a phase that she’d only wear a nighty to bed (no way would she wear PJs), so if Peter Pan came to get her she’d be dressed like Wendy.

Funny that every generation of kids seem to go through these phases.

We have an older version of the book (from the 40s, it was my mother in-law’s as a kid) but I haven’t read it yet.

My little guy wigs out if anyone but me puts him to bed, so I’m stuck reading Cars and Trucks and Things That Go night after night while my wife’s been reading all sorts of interesting stuff to our daughter (Charlotte’s Web, Stuart Little, etc.)

I only ever used my notes. The profs didn’t really use textbooks, I bought a couple that have been handy because the prof said they were on the reading list because once we start working they will be invaluable, which proved true. But everything else was a waste of money.

Really. I’ve even kept some of them to use as references.

I have some profs that don’t use the textbook, and some that do, but I find that frequently the texts actually have good illustrations of things. Shocking, I know.

I have one that was totally useless, and by that I mean that it was more confusing about things than the prof was. A friend is taking the course this semester, so I gave him the book for a beer. He wanted to give me more, but I told him I’d feel better if he saved his money. That book was awful.

The last time I listened to Pratt go on and on and on about how Vancouver is so much better than Toronto, he told a story about how some guy called in and defended TO. Pratt then asked him “Would you move back?” and when the man meekly said no, Pratt declared himself the winner of the arguement.

What a douchebag.

It’s hard to believe those are average prices.

According to MLS.com there are 127 properties for sale in the entire city of Toronto for $350-$375K and only six of those are located between the DVP to the east, Eglinton to the north and Keele to the west.

This winner is exactly in line with the so-called average house price in Toronto.

Methinks they might need to revisit their methodology.

It’s not an expensive place to live, but it is an expensive place to get a foothold.

There are around 10 really great neighbourhoods and the rest of the city is just a sea of concrete and shopping plazas.

If you want to be in (or on the cusp) of one of these neighbourhoods, prices can be prohibitive. Same goes for hot school districts. The school just to the west of where I live is the latest buzz and people are paying ridiculous prices to move into the ’hood.

Bitter Leaf Fan: a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan comments on the team, the media and the exasperation...

by mf37 on Jan 8, 2009 3:25 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

that's true

there are some great neighbourhoods, but they are way overpriced. My best friend grew up in Rouge Hills, and her parents bought a tiny bungalow 20 yrs ago and built it into a beautiful house on a huge lot. But all their neighbours have monstrosities which cost way too much.

But still, if I lived in TO, I could get a house for what a condo costs here. And I don’t think Vancouver’s really considered one of the most expensive places to live in the world, yet.

But as others have pointed out, take one look at any other comparable city and Toronto is totally undervalued.

by LeafFanInVan on Jan 8, 2009 3:46 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no

I saw an ad for those yesterday, how does that work?
We both have RRSPs that we could draw from, since this would be our first place. But we don’t want to use ONLY that, because you have to pay it back in one year and that’d be rather difficult to do.

by Karina on Jan 8, 2009 3:52 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The tax-free accounts let you start an account where you can put up to $5k into it each year and any interest it earns is tax free. You can withdraw from it anytime without penalties. Any space you don’t use is carried forward to the next year:

    * In 2009 you would be allocated and allowed to contribute up to $5,000. If you only contribute $2,000, an amount of $3,000 would be carried forward to 2010.
    * Your contribution room for 2010 would then be $5,000 plus $3,000, or $8,000.
    * If in 2010, you do not contribute but decide to withdraw $1,000, your contribution room for 2011 would be $5,000, plus $8,000 (carried forward from 2010), plus the $1,000 withdrawn, or $14,000.

More info here

Also I think for the RRSP (first time home buyer’s plan), you are allowed to take out up to 20k, and you have to pay it back over a period of 15 years instead of one.

For the footie fans

Probably already heard it, but Ronaldo totaled his Ferrari 599 on the way to practice.. It makes me sad, but then I’d be sadder if it was a ferrari like a 430 or Enzo.

Wonder if the other driver got red carded!

Swoon at either.. I saw an article about how some footballer’s girlfriend was taking his veyron down to the shops and just parking it on a street. Interested passerbys acted as a human shield to prevent delivery trucks from even getting near it to scrape it. Very funny.

how is chewing gum fun? My jaw gets tired and sore when I chew gum, not exactly “fun”

I can understand the practical side of it in getting unwanted tastes outta your mouth as LD said (TWSS), or to freshen up your breath… but I see no other practical (and therefore no real) purposes other then that.
