The timing of May's arrival seems to align perfectly with the Leafs' first visit to Montreal. The team owes a little something to public enemy number one:

GPGAP+/-PIMPPGSHGGWGGTGSOGPCT
2008 - Tom Kostopoulos 35 3 7 10 2 53 0 0 0 1 54 5.6

That vicious attack cost the Leafs the services of their best defenceman for over a month and the fallout of his hit meant that an innocuous hit by Milan Lucic has knocked Van Ryn out of the lineup again with concussion problems. I am not saying that I want to see Kostopoulos injured but if May does nothing else tonight he better be fighting the piece of περιττώματα Greek.

Star-divide

Needless to say, there will be a lot of things to look for in tonight's game:

  • Will the Leafs start the game strongly? They have given up the first goal in 27 of their 40 games this year.
  • Will Kostopoulos actually fight May? Don't forget that the Habs are just a French version of the senators.
  • Will Ponikarosky continue his push towards 30 goals so that the Leafs can then trade him during his prime?
  • Will Antropov wake the hell up?
  • Which Toskala is going to play? The guy that shuts down the senators like he's Curtis Joseph in May or the one that can't lift his blocker arm to save his life?

The Habs are actually a little banged up but they have been showing their strength in depth of late:

Montreal Canadiens Injuries

Out (IR / Out / Suspended / Physically unvailable)

PlayerInjury TypeInjury Date
Mathieu Dandenault left arm surgery 12.10.2008
Georges Laraque groin 12.22.2008
Saku Koivu right ankle/foot 12.12.2008
Christopher Higgins left shoulder 12.11.2008
Oh and look at that, there is no Big Georges for Kostopoulos to hide behind. Tonight's game will hopefully be more interesting than Tuesday's otherwise Burke might have to speed up his plans. That or trade for George Parros.

I will consider it a win if at least 2 leaf players get game misconducts. I don’t care what the score is.

by LeafFanInVan on Jan 8, 2009 3:36 PM EST reply actions

I’m not sure why this is… I was angry when Purse-Boy threw the hit, I got over it, I didn’t think about it for weeks… and now I’m angry and want to see some blood on the ice.

I think they’ve been playing like such pansies recently that I’m expecting May to turn everything around. I have a feeling I’m going to be doing some angry drinking later tonight.

I hope May’s arrival isn’t the false dawn of toughness that Deveaux’s arrival was. I used to laugh at Stortini being called Huggy Bear but at least he throws more than those short lefts.

Here’s my question:

In the last few months, the Leafs have hired Brian “Goon it up” Burke, seen several players hurt on borderline hits, called up Andre Deveaux, dressed Kris Newbury, been called out by their own coach, and traded for Brad May.

Meanwhile, Ryan Hollweg has three fights all year. One in his last 15 games. Tonight is the one month anniversary of the last time he dropped his gloves.

WTF IS HE WAITING FOR?

Exactly what has to happen for him to figure out that it might be a good idea to find a dance partner? Right now, he’s on a fast train to “washed up shitty so-called tough guy who decides not to fight and never get’s another sniff in the NHL-ville”. Current population: Mark Bell. Ian White fights more often than this guy now.

Gah.

My mantra is, if you can’t be good, be violent. I’d like more grit/goonery/thug life in any game regardless of their opponent.. That it is the habs is just a cherry on top!

by LeafFanInVan on Jan 8, 2009 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

What I was thinking during the Florida game

At least fight if you aren’t going to win. Maybe some people think fighting is bad but losing without a fight is worse. Way worse. It’s only a 5 minute penalty and usually the other team gets 5 minutes as well. Big deal. It is allowed. Go down swinging. Drop the gloves and fight.

by general borschevsky on Jan 8, 2009 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

Yep, go down swinging indeed. Make them earn the win, don’t just flop over like a dead whale.. Sad.

A gathering of Habs haters, no Maguire (its on RDS) and cold beverages. Life is fucking great. Even if the game sucks, Gainey is in desperate need of a defenseman. This is both a tryout for certain Leaf’s defensemen, and a weakness to exploit.

Of course it's the Q

So the stats are obviously a little askew. But Aubin was never 6’3" or had the frame to carry another 10lbs of muscle without losing much of his hockey skill. Stefanovich’s biggest issue is obviously his mental game, but I’m sure Coach Roy will put in some crazy in him.

O’Byrne is The Purse Thief. Kostopolous apparently got a little overzealous coming to his aid when the police showed up.

The version that came out later was that she had taken pics on her cell phone of a certain teammate that got traded over a week later that would’ve gotten him divorced. O’Byrne was seen waving the cell phone outside the club, and nothing was taken from her purse.
