Colin Campbell is a Joke
- Trying to separate an opponent's head from their body = 1 game
- Trying it again = 1 game
- Biting an opponent = 2 games
- Breaking an opponent's hand, nose, and giving him a concussion = 3 games
- Barely touching a referee and doing no worse than what happens any time a fight is broken up = 3 games
courtesy the brilliant Scarlett Ice
So let's hope that Grabovski throws an elbow to the younger Kostitsyn's head on February 7th rather than try to fight him like a man so he won't pick up a 10 game suspension.
Update
Here's a little mystery: Who on the Habs picked up the abuse of officials penalty?
40.3 Bench Minor Penalty
- A bench minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct shall be assessed under this rule for the following infractions:
(i) Any Coach or non-playing person who bangs the boards with a stick or other object at any time, showing disrespect for an official’s decision. If this is done in order to get the attention of the on-ice officials for a legitimate reason (i.e. serious injury, illness, etc.), then discretion must be exercised by the Referees.
(ii) Any unidentifiable player or goalkeeper, or any Coach or nonplaying person who uses obscene, profane or abusive language or gesture directed at an on or off-ice official or uses the name of any official coupled with any vociferous remarks. (see also 40.5 (ii)
(iii) Any player, goalkeeper, Coach, or non-playing person interferes in any manner with any game official including the Referees, Linesmen, Game or Penalty Timekeepers or Goal Judges in the performance of their duties.
So that explains why the Habs faced no further discipline. As for Grabovski, he did the following so it was an automatic suspension:
41.4 Automatic Suspension – Category III
- Any player or goalkeeper who, by his actions, physically demeans an official or physically threatens an official by (but not limited to) throwing a stick or any other piece of equipment or object at or in the general direction of an official, shooting the puck at or in the general direction of an official, spitting at or in the general direction of an official, or who deliberately applies physical force to an official solely for the purpose of getting free of such an official during or immediately following an altercation shall be suspended for not less than three (3) games.
The emphasis is mine because having seen that play out during countless fights I wonder why this penalty isn't invoked more often when players use much more force to try to extricate themselves from the evil clutches of linesmen?
As for why the Leafs' didn't appeal? Well, it's for the same reason you didn't ask your professor to re-grade a paper to rectify an unfair mark: it could get worse. The League reserves the right to increase any suspension so better to keep your mouth shut, take your medicine, and roam the Rue St. Catherine looking for revenge.

Honestly...
I’m OK with three games for what he did. I think the respect of the officiating cerw while on the ice is tantamount…
however, the lack of respect this process gives the players, is the real mistake.

It's Ridiculous
How often do you see fighters try to get past an official?
Hell, the younger Kostitsyn tries to get past his linesman at one point too. Why not suspend him?

I’m madder about the length of the Kostopolous suspension than Grabovski being suspended. Ref shoving can’t be tolerated.

yes...
that was my point. sorry, didn’t make sense at first.
i think a person causing bodily injury to another human being, even if it was “an accident” should be looked at more severely. We hear so much talk about how the players don’t respect one another out there, and this could be a root cause of it..

Abuse of Officials has mandatory suspensions – 3 for a minor infraction, 10 for a serious one.
They didn’t have the option to give him one or two.

No
They had the option to give him a talking to and tell him that because he’s a Leaf there are different rules so he can’t try to get at a guy he wants to kill without getting suspended.

Actually
I bet that if I look up the rule it says that if the ref writes it in his report then the league has no option but to suspend which does not change the overall thesis that Colin Campbell is in fact a joke.

Yeah, I wonder what the official report said.
I can’t get too worked up on this, partly because I’m slowly switching to “root for losses” mode.

It’s getting to that stage, but they’re going to need some serious luck with the lottery balls, and luck hasn’t been their strong suit.

The tough thing is that the Lightning, Thrashers, Islanders, and freaking sens all suck so much too.

You're damn right we do!
Catch us if you can…
I was worried for Grabovski, from what I saw on highlights. That was a no-no. He crossed that line from “let me at him” to “hey, funny-dressed guy, get yo’ freakin’ hands off me.” (Wait, I forgot, Campbell doesn’t have defined lines “Each incident is separate.”)
On the other hand, May and friends were clearly trying to reach him to tell him to cool it, but it looked like the linesman was saying, “Nu-uh. My prisoner. I escort him.”

The linesman made a pretty good take down initially.
Not as good as Kordic getting thrown around but good.

I wondered what the highlights omitted.
Seems like they could have just let them fight?

No kidding
It would have been the easiest solution.

I need to re-read LFiV’s fanpost….
I know that this suspension will hurt the Leafs which is good but it’s still bullshit and that bothers me.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
In the Marlies game
I was at Dec 28th against the Moose, someone (I forget his name now) tried to go after Kronwall with under a minute left after Kronwall had one of those “almost from behind” hits on a Moose player. Anyway, while the linesman were in between these two, and thus saving Kronwall’s life, the Moose player swung for Kronwall, but came up short. The distance he came up short was about the width of the linesman’s head, cause he caught him right in the side of the head, knocking the linesman’s helmet straight up in the air. It was the first time I’ve ever seen that.
Long story short, abuse of official penalty – 3 games suspension. For a punch, albeit “accidental”. A slight push? Well, that’s also 3 games.
I for one, think that the Leafs asked for 3 games however, in the hopes of losing more. The same reason Cujo hasn’t retired yet.
Grabovski lost his cool last night. Montreal got under his skin and now Toronto is without its leading goal scorer for three games.
I guess it’s good Grabovski learns this lesson now but he’s got to keep his cool.

If he had been playing like crap all night because he lost his shit I’d be more upset but he lost it at the end of a 6-2 game.

ya...
to me it appears to be a case of the kid hearing what the coach and GM are saying, and buying in.

I think it's good
because the game before they were saying how the bench was too quiet. If Grabby can learn to bring that fire, and harness it to inspire his play, and those of his teammates…. I love his future.

Bah
Watched the youtube clip on mirtle’s story, it was hardly the “shoving” I had pictured.. The linesman didn’t seem all that threatened by Grabbo.
Is it acceptable to cheer for the bruins to destroy the habs yet?
When was that ever unacceptable?
I’ve even started hoping teams like Ottawa win occasionally so that the Leafs can slip behind them.
Leaf, the universe and everything.
I wasn’t sure, since the Bruins are also hated in their own way.. The most acceptable eastern possible contender would be washington, I’m guessing. But I’m not holding out hope for them.
A healthy Washington can win the East.
I want all of the teams behind us to win or lose to each other in the shootout.

At 11:11 of the second period...
Matt D’Agostini received an abuse of officials penalty. It was at the same time as the Mayers-Kostopoulos fight.
Where’s his automatic suspension?
it only comes
if the official submits a report.

Umm
The abuse of officials in this case wasn’t physical.
They mentioned it during the broadcast that it was someone mouthing off to the refs from the bench. Its basically an unsportsmanlike

Forgetting about The Wheel of Justice, losing and Toskala’s valise arm….
…I think we can thank Grabbo for injecting some serious fire into a rivalry that has lost some steam over the last couple years.
I’ve now got Feb.7th circled not only as ‘futuredrunk’ but also ’Belarussian Bareknuckle Beatdown".
I might be going to this game so I will also file it under “Missions Behind Enemy Lines”
