Shanahan leaves the Devils

Brendan Shanahan has left the New Jersey Devils.
It seems he feels he wasn't able to play as well as he wanted.

Shanahan was my favorite player and seeing him win the cup was almost as good as seeing the Leafs win. I wish he could have played for us in his prime. I’m sure he and Sundin would have lit it up. I can’t wait to see him in the hall of fame.

I liked Shanahan a lot at one time. It’s my opinion that he put the Red Wings over the top and made them champions.

Winning reaction to his retirement: Eklund, who tweeted that this was part of the Devils’ preparations to trade for a #1 centre. Because, you know, what else could the retirement of a fourth line winger mean?
