Canadiens 4 Leafs 3 OT Final
Really deflated right now. Leafs outshoot Montreal 46 - 27 and lose 4-3. Beauchemin and Schenn looked bad on the first goal for Montreal, a power play tally early on in a double minor awarded to Komisarek for high sticking Gomez, but Beauchemin picked his play up considerably afterwards.
The real story of the night is that the PK is still atrocious, and Mike Komisarek took a ton of penalties for shoving players around the net that offset Montreal running Toskala all night.
None of the goals on Toskala were particularly horrible, the first one wasn't his fault at all; he got hung out to dry. The second goal he collapsed into the net while the puck was behind the net and never came out to square up. The third goal was a deflection that hit him in his glove, and on the fourth goal Toskala let a soft puck hit him and he pushed it out into the slot for Gorges to end the game. Not his worst game, but hardly a big statement after a quiet preseason. Toskala ends the night with an 0.851 SV% (compared to Price's .935) and a Leafs OT loss.
There are other things to cover, notably the Leafs being outhit tonight, but I'm pretty depressed by this result. Toronto starts the season 0-0-1 and will go to Washington to play the Caps next. Washington beat Boston 4-1 tonight.

not quite as mad, think this is good…. no overconfidence, Komi will be calmer next game, and our PK will come together once the new players adjust.

How long does he need to be outside the top 30 goaltenders for save percentage before we do something?
Since coming to Toronto he’s been at best mediocre and at worst he’s singlehandedly lost us games. I won’t say he was horrible tonight, but that was a very mediocre performance. Does mediocre keep Gustavsson on the bench?

I’ll say saturday against the caps. If he doesn’t have a sv% above .900 or lets in a soft goal he needs to get out. And honestly, he needs to play better, i’d give him three goals that were beyond HIS capability but the 2nd goal even a backup would have stopped if he put his stick down.

The third goal isn’t his fault but it hit him and turned his glove over. Ugh.

look guys, komi deserved that penalty and it was a stupid penalty on his part. he wouldn’t have gone to the bench with his head down if it hadn’t been a good call.
Toskala just isn’t there in those clutch moments; if the Monster isn’t good, then the season’s a failure. The Leafs looked like a bunch of amateurs out on the ice at times. Schenn is headed for sophomore slump. Slaberg looked out of his depth, let’s hope he improves.
We realy needed a quality top-line scorer tonight, one that can beat a decent goalie with skill and there wasn’t one available. Let’s hope Kessel fills that role.
The bright side:
a) there’s room for improvement; the defence can get better
b) leaf fan stuck in ottawa is right, we get a point, but it’s not charity, we earned it

Stalberg was flying and creating chances. All of Komisarek’s penalties outside of the high stick were incredibly marginal. Gomez runs into Toskala full speed, Komisarek does some shoving and that’s matching? Bullshit.

We actually got away with a lot of that goalie running....
Last year. As crappy as it was to watch tonite, we got those calls every time last year, I don’t wanna play with that karma ;P. However, we need to play a similar physical game. Komi doesn’t need to back off, we’ll get the benefit from better refereeing in the future. We DO need to work on the PK though, and I think as players gel, that will happen by itself.
BTW Stalberg for the Calder!

a) the penalty kill was terrible
b) for a bigger team than the Canadiens, their puck possession in their defensive end was apalling. Three icing in a row? Couldn’t they just get the fucking puck?
c) The shots they were firing; weak! Where was Beauchemin’s vaunted cannon from the point? It looked like every shot the Leafs took went through molasses, they were so slow

Disappointing to say the least
It seems like what Burke touted as our strengths was completely absent today. 3 of our top 4 defencemen were a letdown today. Beauchemin and Schenn didn’t show much chemistry and were often out of position in the first half of the game. Komisarek offset any contribution he made with stupid penalty after stupid penalty. Montreal’s forecheck gave us fits all night long and they were the team that was finishing their checks.
Our forwards played well. I was pleasantly surprised by their relentlessnes and speed. But it didn’t matter because what we expected to lean on was completely absent.

Yeah, we picked up Komisarek as a premiere shutdown d-man to anchor our penalty kill.
Beauchemin looked very rough around the edges the first half of the game but QBed the play very well in the offensive zone and controlled play for long stretches at the end.

- Screw the ref on the last penalty to Komi, Seriously elbowing? He pushed him into the friggin boards!
- White looked awful a couple giveaways and blind passes.
- Top line of Blake, Stajan and Stalberg was awesome
- Toskala wasn’t completely horrible, but he wasn’t good either. All in all I was not impressed

Toskala put up an .850 across from Price’s .935. You’re not going to win a lot of games when that happens. Toronto outshot Montreal almost 2 to 1 and leaves with a single point because of goaltending.

Scoring chances v. Scoring Chances
The Leafs may have outshot the habs nearly 2:1, but I’d love to know how the scoring chances compare.
I don’t recall Price making any huge game changing saves. Would need to watch the game again, but it seemed many of the Leaf shots were from the perimeter or garbage in tight.

who cares
the refs were pretty vigilant in ensuring Toskala would be run freely, and should the Leafs attempt to stop the Habs from running them, penalties would be called.
The d did no favors for Toskala. Bitch all you want about his SV%, but if they were getting high quality after high quality scoring chance, while the Leafs happily batted the puck in from the blue line, then no shit he’s gonna have a higher SV%.

I'll venture a cross-sports analogy here...
I watched Toskala today like I followed Eli Manning early in his career: constantly afraid he was going to make a mistake. He didn’t play terrible, but his poor rebound control and the soft goal he did let in didn’t inspire anymore confidence in me. I’m still heading into this season believing that our defensemen have to really perform for him to have a bounceback season.
I’ve been a Leafs fan since early 90’s, so the last few years have been a weird experience for me. I’m used to Potvin, Joseph, and Belfour. Raycroft and Toskala have been a rude awakening.

The Leafs didn’t lose because of the refs tonight. They lost because they blew their first PK, played on the perimeter in the Habs zone and totally broke down with about 20 seconds to go.

You probably won’t want to hear this but it’s not all doom and gloom. After a bad start Beauchemin looked really good. Komi was tough, other than the high stick he was the victim of bad reffing.
The play of Toskala (and a shaky PK) is concerning, I grant you that.

Toskala was 31st in the league in save percentage in 2008.
Toskala was 43rd in the league in save percentage in 2009.
Toskala has an .851 save percentage after tonight. He’s 32. He just had hip and groin surgery. He’s not going to magically “rebound” and even if he did his ceiling is probably somewhere around 35th in the league.
This isn’t entirely Toskala’s fault, but it’s obvious that he has to go.

31st in and of itself means nothing
a) The difference between the numbers is so small. While technically a starting goalie with a saver percentage .002 points higher than another goalie is better…at 27 shots per game and 50 games, they only let in 2.7 goals more over those 50 games. At .005, 6.75 goals more over 50 games.
b) Save percentages do vary from year to year based on factors including goalie performance as well as defence. They won’t vary much based on defence alone. If the Leafs defence is actually much improved this year as everyone seems to think and they can cut down on some of the good scoring opportunities they gave up last year, it could bump up a goalie’s sv% a very small amount.
So, throw that all together, assume a healthy Toskala = a return to two year ago and that an improved defence will bump up his numbers slightly, and it’s well within the realm of possibility for Toskala to hit .910.
Which still isn’t stellar. But it’s adequate and I’ll take it if it means not throwing Gustavsson into the fire.
Give him some more time. If he’s playing poorly, we should find out relatively quickly and be able to act.
Tonight, he did not play poorly though, despite an .851%.

Last year Toskala was better than Chris Osgood and Marty Turco he should be nominated for the Vezina!

good goalies can have bad years, but as long as its an anomaly, they are still good goalies.
if sub par numbers start to be the reg, the goalie is now sub par.

still stick handling like crazy in the opponents zone and no one can take it from him. If only we had some high scoring winger to pair him with…. maybe someone who is injured but is a good goal scorer hmm………

For what it's worth
the Habs showed some holes tonight. Their bottom 2 defensive pairings looked slow and were routinely beaten to the puck by our forecheckers. They didn’t create many scoring chances until they could bring in a well-rested top line. And Jacques Martin made some poorly timed line chances/substitutions.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only person who notices this. A lot of our forwards were holding the puck way too long, IMO. It’s like they were afraid to take the first shot they saw, but sometimes that first shot was a great opportunity. I hated seeing them make a move that just placed another D-men between them and the goal.

Also, get Kulemin and Tlusty in there, and give Tlusty some minutes. At least he has talent.
Wallin should be sent back to whatever the Swedes call hell. He sucks. That last shot on Price was worthless. He didn’t even try to go blocker side; he just shot it right at him. He might as well have skated over and handed the puck to him like an easter basket.
by Peter de Chatham on Oct 1, 2009 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
are you kidding?
Wallin wasn’t brought here to score – he was brought to provide some solid defense up front. He didn’t do so hot on the PK – though no goals can be faulted to him – but he had some awesome defensive plays tonight.

i still expect a decent shot on net when you have the chance. he had all the time in the world to line up and aim that puck, a decent angle, and a clear line to the goal. If you can’t shoot within a 1-foot margin from 15 feet out, you don’t deserve to be in the NHL.
and if we are to follow Burke’s model, then Wallin doesn’t fit as a defensive 3rd liner; we need someone bigger and less European. i.e. belligerent

I agree completely.
I was far more disappointed with Schenn than Toskala tonight! He’s been getting caught flat-footed on a consistent basis lately; I saw it happy multiple times in the pre-season, and I hate to think of it becoming a trend. He’s not nearly fast enough to catch a Cammaleri or Gionta after he’s caught out of position or going the wrong way.
by Fleet Fox on Oct 1, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t get the whole “managing his ice time” thing. Hows this going to help his development? I thought the only time he got caught was the winning goal. However everyone on the ice at that time played a part in letting Habby mcHab player get the goal. Overall the only impressive d-man was Kabby tonight.

This year he likely wants to try to get him out in more favourable conditions.

Wilson Post
- Defense struggled at times
- Forwards did a great job on the forecheck
- Price had an excellent game
- It all came down to turning it over in the neutral zone with 5 minutes to go
- On both PK’s we won the faceoff. Those are huge mistakes.
- We counted 5 times they ran our goalies and only one time they got a penalty. Once Mike was there and made a guy pay the price, we support that 100% We were partly responsible but you have to call that. Mike answered the bell, but we want all our defensemen to respond like that.
- I was very happy with Komisarek’s play. Setting the tone for the season.
- Vesa was fine, couldn’t do much on any of those goals.
- Stajan had a really good game, Stalberg is our best forward, consistently made something happen. Grabbo had a great game, doing little things.
That is all.

Eh. Only thing I’m upset about is Toskala. The other things that went wrong for us need time to get better.
Toskala’s had two years.

I totally get it. I just don’t think Wilson agrees with you, although if it takes more than a month for him to work this out and Gustavsson isn’t starting and Toskala still sucks, I will be irate.

A month?
Work what out? I’m seriously amazed that you think Toskala needs to work something out. He has never been a good goale in Toronto by any reasonable standard.
He has nothing impressive to bounce back to. He’s 32 he won’t magically get better.

I don’t know if Toskala can get better. I don’t think he is the goalie of our future anyways, and question the fact that he’s being given this chance despite not deserving it.
But I’m not the coach, and Wilson is obviously dedicated to him, so I’m trying to temper my response.

The one thing I really hate about Toskala is the fact that he can’t make that one save thet can turn the game around. Cujo was always good for that game changer where he bailed them out. The only good thing Toskala is for is Kicking his team in the nuts as far as agame saver goes.

We need to give Gustavsson a couple of starts
probably as early as Saturday, so we can see where we stand. I want to see a full NHL game out of that guy, and see how he handles it. There were definetely a couple of moments in tonight’s game where his superior rebound control and size would have saved a goal or two.
Wilson has some work to do with the defence. They need to shape up.
Also, work on offense. I like the way the Habs were passing the puck on the power play, where was that on the Leafs side tonight? Everything looked so damn clumsy out there. It needs to be fixed.

sorry, i should have worded myself better. it’s not about the powerplay by itself, it was the puck posession skill in the offensive end, both at even strength and on the power play.
the leafs didn’t get set up really well or get very good cycling going. their passing seemed to be a bit off.
like I said earlier, things just looked clumsy out there overall.

the whole preseason, everyone was saying that a setup QB like Kaberle needed a guy like Beauchemin to take the shots for him, sort of like he used to have with McCabe when McCabe was scoring in the opponents net.
maybe I’m missing something here, but it makes more sense to pair Schenn and Komisarek together as the two shut down defencemen, and Kaberle and Beauchemin for offensive stuff.

ok, that makes a bit more sense.
that explain the lack of good set-up play on 5 on 5 this game. The defensive pairings were not set up for it; at 5 on 5 they are “half-defence, half offense”.

Agreed. I hate whwn he put White out instead of Schenn. It sucks for Beauch cause he has to get used to 2 different d partners and it sucks for Schenn cause he isn’t getting minutes he should be getting and is being thrown out into pressure situations after riding pine for big lumps of time. Nothing against White (who was pretty bad defensively tonight) but keep the pairs together so they can adjust to each other.

I’m actually surprised at how little these teams have fundamentally changed.
Montreal will continue to live and die on the PP, and the calbire of goaltending they receive.
Toronto will continue to live and die on their defensive zone coverage.
Both will be in a dog-fight to make the playoffs.

just some thoughts on the game
1. this has been beaten to death already, but komi tried too hard. this seems to be a short-term problem so no real remedy needed.
2. beauchemin was very slow in picking up his man. again, a beginning-of-season issue, hopefully will wrinkle itself out sooner rather than later. or even, later rather than never. but saturday would be best time.
3. schenn was expecting a pass for the second goal and he committed to the side too early. maybe he was supposed to, but in my humble opinion, he left the front of the net open before the guy behind the net (GBTN) decided on his course of action. once this occured, the GBTN easily had a pass in front and schenn was left defending the pass that never came. it was also beauchemin’s fault in terms of marking the scoring guy, so not all the blame falls on luke. again, this is something that will probably fix itself as schenn is young and will improve with experience. this is just one of the little things that is picked up over time, rather than learnt, and shows an advantage of veterans over rookies.
4. just a note, stajan’s first goal was amazing and as the CBC guy said, it was an advantage of chemistry. stajan deftly moved to the side of the net, and since the defender couldnt see behind him, kaberle had an open lane to stajan. rather than using a pass, which might have been intercepted since stajan was not that far away from the defender, or could have allowed price the time to switch positioning to an optimal angle to make the save, kaberle played a slap-pass that stajan just had to get a stick on, and it easily beat price. beautiful goal, and hopefully all our forwards make smart plays like that throughout the season
5. the blake stajan stalberg line was incredibly energetic and effective. stempniak had a great game. poni scored. overall, forwards played really well, and the defence should naturally improve to the point that if the forwards continue at this level, the same game we played yesterday would then be a win.
