Pens @ Leafs - All That's Left is the Crying

So, we're getting close to the "worry" point, of five games.  Have your say on the game here.  I'd have more to say, but I was raised to not say anything if I've nothing nice to say...

You know what sucks? Your brother gets tickets to the TFC game, they play like demons all game and blow the lead in extra time.
Then you finally get to try Ethiopian food for the first time in your life, and it doesn’t suit you at all.
Then you get in the car, turn on the radio, and the fucking Leafs are mailing it in, again.
It could have been such a great day.

Honestly though

Could this team that played tonight, play the way they did tonight and still beat the MARLIES? I think Bozak, Hanson, Tlusty, Frogren, and Gunnarson would run them out of the building. Blake looks old. Stempniak tries hard but he sucks. Mayers is not a hockey player at this point, he’ a former hockey player still playing.

But I’m trying to be realistic now in retrospect.

Ok so things they did well… – 1 line played ok.

Toskala still sucks… I don’t care anymore… I’m done with it… play MacDonald

I’m over my fence sitting… he’s had enough rope to hang himself with. I admit it wasn’t all his fault, but he didn’t save the game either.

But… even if he can’t… a .905 would make the team “respectable”… and Gustavsson and MacDonald should be able to handle that.

well that sounds like progress to me

The Pens will be a cup contender, and we knew before that the buds wouldn’t be. This is a game where “playing better and losing” is not great, but could be seen as at least something of good news, and not just an excuse.

We don’t have to outrun the bear, just the sens… and whoever else is competing for 8th.

I want to trade players between my teams. Spoon can go to the Leafs (truculossity!), and Vesa can go to the Tigers, where conceding 6 points a game puts you at the top of the league, not the bottom.

I’ve been having this argument with friends for the past few seasons.

I’m watching the FUTURE of the Leafs… I don’t give much of a crap about the present… yes it sucks to lose a game to the Stanley Cup Champs… but the parts that sucked are generally the parts I already knew sucked.

Toskala, Stajan, lack of jam on the top 2 lines, too many giveaways…

Good things included Kulemin, Grabo, and Poni… Schenn looked pretty good, White wasn’t that bad… Stempniak didn’t suck horribly… I mean… they weren’t irrevocably bad… they just have too many pieces that suck so they won’t be competitive right now.

Phil Kessel is good, but the value of the trade depends entirely on the Leafs standings at the end of the next 2 seasons. To be honest I liked Burke a lot and I believed in him and I feel really let down right now. We mortgaged our future for Phil Kessel and we suck.

There’s only been one NNN this season because I have nothing positive to say about this team. I don’t want to go see them play when they come to NYC on Monday because I have nothing to say.

Because

Kessel doesn’t play goal, Kessel isn’t going to help the PK, Kessel isn’t going to play on every line, and Kessel isn’t going to be truculent.

Those are all MAJOR issues with this team right now, 50 points from Kessel or not.

It’s like you think Kessel is playing but he’s invisible on the ice. We didn’t mortgage the future for the team you’re watching… we mortgaged it for the guy who will be one of our top offensive players for the next 5 years…. not the team you’re watching right now THAT HE ISN’T EVEN PLAYING ON.

Just got back from the game. That was—and I don’t say this lightly—the quietest I’ve ever heard the ACC (and I was in standing room…I mean, you can usually count on the back few rows of the purples making at least some noise). As soon as Pittsburgh scored, the life went right out of the building; beyond that, gallow’s humour got us through. In general, I thought Toskala did okay (i.e., he only allowed one real stinker). Our forecheck was good. Our shooters got into good positions. Otherwise, if the Leafs had commited one more cheap turnover, I was fully prepared to gouge my own eyes out. I’m nowhere near ready to panic…but damn, guys, would it have killed you to seem like you cared a bit??

I really don't think this will encapsulate the whole year

I called for 6 points in the opening month… I expected them to beat Montreal and Ottawa… that didn’t happen. I figured they’d get shelled by Washington and Pittsburgh… and the upcoming road trip would be shit. They should beat NY and I’m not sure about Buffalo and Montreal back to back at the end of the month…

Either way… they might be lucky now to get 4 or 5 points this month. So if they do that well… they’re doing fine from here on out… next up NOVEMBER.

I’m fairly certain he would only do that to enact an ancient voodoo ritual with it, meat. Fairly.

i'm putting all this suckiness to good use.

i’m not watching another game until Kessel comes on, or Gustavsson is officially named the starting goalie.

until then, I’ll be taking in the beautiful October sunshine in California.

if we lost and the games were interesting and fun, that would be one thing, but these are pathetic.

Matt Stajan as your #1 center? Not sold on that bull shit.

Mike Komisarek as your #1 shut down d-man? I’ve hated that signing since it happened, and other than one fantastic pre-season shift, I’ve not seen much to change my mind.

Rooting for Toskala to improve so we can trade him? A fool’s dream, and I’m no longer going to be that fool.

Saying you’ve got to earn your time on this team? Lip service. I ain’t buying it Burke…

I’m so glad I live in California. I’ve been missing out on some fantastic weather lately, and nothing is on fire!

WHAT THE FUCK..... PLAYOFFS!!!!1

hey, just got back from the game and holy fuck was it a stinker. they were so disorganized and they couldn’t make a good pass all game. i agree that they need to make a complete youth movement. I also think that Schenn should sit out the next game. he is playing way too pressured. i think one of the vets has to sit him down and tell him that he doesn’t have to try to be the best player on the team… if he plays like he did last year, he will be. ToskaLOL was pathetic… we would have done better if we played the whole game 6 on 5. lets just hope that mickey d starts the next game and actually plays decent. also it felt for most of the game that pittsburgh was teasing us and giving them their ‘E’ game and we couldn’t even compete. the game played just like it was. A stanley cup champion playing a timbits team….

blake sucks. glad i kept him AS A KEEPER in the pool. jesus.
if i were toskala, this is what i’d say in the dressing room: “yah, i suck. you guys suck too though.”
jim hughson used the term "double team’ way too many times tonight. i felt a little uncomfortable.
poni-grabs-lemin looked promising tonight. lemin especially had some jump.
stempniak looks like a new man.
stajan as first line centre is a joke.
penalty killing is beyond atrocious right now.
schenn = sophomore slump.
kessel please come back soon.
komisarek was invisible.
bozak should be called up asap.
i might have to sell my tickets to the game in chicago in november and just go for a nice dinner with the missus instead.

to the people freaking out because we suck and traded picks for phil kessel

even if our pick ends up being top 5 next year, that’s ok. kessel was a top 5 pick, and has 40-goal potential. and he’s 22. it’s ok to trade a top 5 pick for him.

if we suck next year though… then we have problems.

I’m not freaking out. I figured once the team starts actually caring about how they play (win or lose) then I will too. It’s kind of painfully obvious the players really don’t right now.

As an example, I can’t recall seeing any Leaf player playing as hard as Crosby did during the last couple minutes of a game they had already wrapped up, while on a powerplay. Perhaps the Leaf players were taking notes? Hope so!

Practice

Wilson made a comment in his presser about practice. He said you can’t practice getting in the lanes, and guys don’t go 100%. To me, that says it all. A journalist friend of mine watched the Pens practice and she said they are always going full force. They practice shot blocking in practice. We make fun of Spezza and Neil for fighting in practice, but at least they have some energy. They need to practice all the things they suck at. There may not be enough time for everything, and clearly Toskala (are we allowed to say his name again?) has been practicing hard, as we hear every game (that seems to be his excuse—he is still practicing!).

Anyway, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Wilson will get fired if the Leafs don’t get some consistency in their game. It is his job to run practice and make it work. So far, he’s not doing that.

Someone else noted that we’ve lost two games we were supposed to, and two close ones that we could/should have won. But we didn’t. Good teams win close games and win games they are not supposed to. With a good goalie, we are in the mix against both the Pens and Caps, but instead, we are down early and it’s a cake walk. We are close, we just have not had the right result yet.

It is obvious what is wrong, but there is nothing to do about it other than fix practice habits (except giving Joey Mac the start). The problem is that we ARE close and things may right themselves, which will give the players the wrong impression, if they don’t actually address the root cause.

Regardless, I will continue to watch and hope religiously, and never give up on my Leafs. Go mutherfukin Leafs Go!

If we actually had a player who gave his heart and soul during the games, or who had Iverson’s talent, that would be one thing. But we don’t. These are guys who need to practice better.

by Leaf in Habland on Oct 11, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

optional practice for the Pens, and every single player shows up and gives it 100%. We need our team to do that. The effort isn’t there, let alone the execution.
But I’m surprised at the suckiness of some players, it’s like they’re completely unprepared for the season, and it really disappoints me.
