Maple Leafs 2 v. Rangers 7: Confidence In Short Supply

Greg Millen catches a lot of flak around these parts for his dogged determination to show that there has never been a goal scored that has been the fault of the goaltender. However, before Ron Wilson's presser last night he brought up a great point which the coach then re-iterated. Millen noted that the Rangers are able to have a strong forecheck and four defencemen under the age of twenty-five because they know that they can take chances with Henrik Lundqvist tending goal. He pointed out that the team can send two men in on the rush because every shot on goal doesn't have a great chance of going in. Ron Wilson was then asked about what he thought about the Rangers and his answer extolled the virtues of a John Tortorella-coached team - hard-working, aggressive forecheck, hard hitting - which sounded suspiciously like what he wishes his team would be someday.

Last night was a great example of how a confident goaltender can spread confidence throughout the team. Both teams made some pretty bad giveaways but only one saw the majority of them end up in the back of the net. We can quibble at how many goals were directly, completely, and solely Toskala's fault but what won't change is that the Maple Leafs won't play anywhere near their potential with the finished Finn in net.

GPMINWLTEGAGAGAASASVSV%SO
2009 - Vesa Toskala 4 205 0 2 19 5.56 101 82 .812 0
GPMINWLTEGAGAGAASASVSV%SO
2009 - Henrik Lundqvist 5 298 4 1 12 2.42 149 137 .919 0

As a quick note, if we had swapped goalies the Leafs would only have allowed 8 goals in 5 games. Take that in while you think of how you can help make sure Toskala never plays for the Leafs again.

Ron Wilson certainly appeared to be at the end of his rope during his post-game presser which lasted all of four questions.  If Joey MacDonald doesn't get the start tonight against Colorado then I'd have to start thinking that maybe Ron Wilson has been replaced by a Montreal-developed spy machine bent on destroying the Old Rivals.

Star-divide

Here's a look at the seven goals that the Leafs coughed up:

  1. The first one's on an unfortunate 5-on-3 and Luke scehnn scores it so it hardly seems fair to count it against the Leafs but there it is. A wonderful start once more.
  2. Everything is under control with everyone covered and the puck behind the net when Wade "Sniff Sniff" Redden slides down past his winger and snaps a shot short side past Toskala. Right about now I cracked my second drink.
  3. The Leafs had cut the lead down to one last in the second when Dan Girardi was able to float a long-long wrister past Toskala. This goal was then given the Zapruder treatment by Greg Millen in a vain attempt to absolve him of any blame. Four goals later Millen will look a lot like Ron Wilson did during his presser.
  4. Hey! Look at this. The Leafs again got a late goal to cut the lead to one and they cough up an early one to kill any chance of a comeback after the team's best period of the year. Schenn loses it, Grabovski has a chance to clear it, and the Toskala lets a fluttering backhand go past his blocker. It's not all of his fault but let's file this under "It would be nice to get a save once in a while".
  5. Jeff Finger, trying to be the only one in blue and while to play goalie, makes a glove save but the deflected puck lies in the crease for a few seconds before a falling Marian Gaborik reacts first and slots home .
  6. After a Tomas Kaberle giveaway Toskala makes the first save but then lets in a long Dan Girardi slapper. One more for the "hey buddy, you get $4M a year to make those kinds of saves" file.
  7. Millen pointed out that the Leafs' PK could benefit from the occasional save that is of the more than routine variety and this goal highlighted that need. Yes, Toskala made the first save. And then he made sure to kick it right out to Sean Avery who then slid it five-hole.

I honestly can't write enough about Vesa Toskala and the detrimental knock-on effect that his horrible play has on the rest of the club. The stories are of course trumpeting the fact that the Leafs have never had such a bad start in the 80 year history of the Maple Leafs name or that newcomers Francois Beauchemin and Mike Komisarek have struggled mightily. The numbers will be crunched and it will certainly scream that it is time to look into contacting Mike Danton.

However, I don't think it's a stretch to say that getting NHL calibre goaltending (it's not even about getting average goaltending!) would make a difference.  Anything good that the team does gets lost because of the end result. Jeff Finger had his best game of the year and threw a couple of massive hits. Think that'll get mentioned? Nikolai Kulemin continued his hit-filler strong play. What are the odds anyone else notices? The team finally played more than a period of the kind of hitting forecheck that Wilson wants to see but what will get the focus? The L and the goaltending.

Ron Wilson has complained that things are really depressing and it's not too hard to understand why. If I was busting my ass only to see a terrible goal it would sap a lot of the will out of me. Especially if I killed myself during training camp to get the opportunity to make the team or improve my standing while the black hole in net was gifted his position and gets nothing but support from the coach. But that's just me. I've never had to play on a team with at least two superior options in net that didn't see the ice because of reasons beyond comprehension to every outside observer.

Tonight it's time to see Joey MacDonald begin warming the seat for Jonas Gustavsson. Damien Cox is half right. The Leafs need to cut ties with Vesa toskala. Let him know that he'll get every paycheque due to him but he'll never disgrace the Maple Leaf again. Also, he should invest in a comfortable pillow for those bus rides. At this point, even his mom has to admit that he is steering the Leafs down the garden path to heartbreak.

toskala

i was so pissed at the rest of the team last night that for once I wasn’t yelling much at Toskala.

I don’t think he can wear the goat horns but you’re right. Routine saves just have to be made. AT LEAST 3 of the goals against qualify as “routine”

To say nothing of the occasional “bail out your teammates with a game saver” variety. Which was the Callahan stop in close. Too bad the game was already over at that point.

For all of the passion fans have here in North America it’s all relatively sane. In Europe Toskala would get constant abuse everywhere he went. In Africa he’d have his house burned down.

Not giving anyone any ideas…

That’s the problem, Toskala doesn’t make routine saves. I think our defense and offense have looked bad but with some confidence from knowing your goalie does his job I think both of those start to gel and do their thing.

We need to get Toskala out of the net.

I got that 10 great games DVD and watched the Sundin one (how that’s a great Sundin game, I dunno) and CuJo is unbelievable. Heart pounding, you never understand how he makes the save, but he does and the team looks confident and has swagger because of it.
I miss those days.

Best take I’ve read on the current season yet. There are other probable issues, sure, but none of them make a difference until Toskala is unemployed.

by puckurgently on Oct 13, 2009 9:37 AM EDT reply actions

It’s not the saves. It’s the rebounds. Those big, fat, juicy ones he likes to throw out. He’s pretty good at making the first stop, but teams are getting 3 or 4 chances every time.

Couple that with the Leafs shite passing in and out of the d-zone, and you have a mess.

by birky on Oct 13, 2009 9:58 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, Toskala has poor positioning and atrocious rebound control. He seems pretty athletic right now but he just doesn’t gobble up pucks.

The Schenn “own goal” last night had Schenn clear the puck off the line and Toskala wave at it and push it back towards the goal line where Schenn stuffed it in.

Why even keep playing Toskalol at this point? It’s not like he’s a Burke signing that he and Wilson feel compelled to give chances to in order to justify the move. He’s one of the last vestiges of the JFJ error. Just cut your damn losses and move on already.

To say Komiserek and Beachemin have struggles mightily, the day after Francois led the team in ice time and was EVEN, is not giving credit where it’s due. Komi was solid as well, making a few fantastic defensive plays that go unnoticed in a 7-2 laugher.

Schenn is the guy who has struggled. Kaberle, defensively, has also struggled.

Wilson said he’s throwing Exelby into the line-up: I think it’s Schenn that has to sit, not Komi or Beauchemin..

by The Muppet on Oct 13, 2009 10:09 AM EDT reply actions

Over the course of the season both Komisarek and Beauchemin have struggled mightily.

Schenn’s struggles, like the rest of the defencemen’s, is overblown because it’s impossible to play a perfect game and that’s what it takes to look good with Toskalol in net.

I have no idea who will sit for Exelby but I wouldn’t be surprised no matter who sits and it’ll look like a great move because if Joey MacDonald plays tonight the Leafs will have an NHL goalie in net. Won’t mean that the person sitting was the problem.

they’re losing their minds back there since they can’t make ANY mistakes or the puck ends up in their own net. so sad.

thing is

in the 2nd period, mistakes didn’t find the back of the net… and we played well.

Let's put blame, where blame is due

I can’t find the quote, but we all know that Burke said that the players would need to PROVE they belong on the team.

If Burke and Wilson truly believe that Toskala is not the sole source of their woes, then they better find the other guy(s) who is(are) and demote or waive him(them.)

it’s that simple. if there are not SIGNIFICANT roster changes in the next week, I would like to see significant changes in the GM and Coach position. I’ll start the campaign myself if need be.

I for one am confused as to why Hagman would be a scratch instead of Blake.

Yes.

Blake deserves several games in the press box. I know we’re kinda glad he injured Toskala but if he had been responsible for injuring Gustavsson we’d be furious.

by general borschevsky on Oct 13, 2009 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

the only reason I can see for Hagman being scratched is he made it easy by admitted he played horrible, and Wilson can trust he’ll set an example of how to react when scratched – no brooding or being a baby, just come back and play hard, so that when he scratches someone else, he say tell them to look at Hagman.

good analysis

I want to trade players between my teams. Spoon can go to the Leafs (truculossity!), and Vesa can go to the Tigers, where conceding 6 points a game puts you at the top of the league, not the bottom.

Last night my wife actually sat down and watch some of the game with me while we waited for House to come on. I was explaining to her how bad Toskala had actually been. 80% saves, for every 5 shots, 1 goes in. So she started counting.

Four separate occasions, the 5th shot on net she counted went in. By this point she was laughing, and I was sobbing.

by RepressedOptimism on Oct 13, 2009 10:28 AM EDT reply actions

So Millen’s point is that it’s not that Toskala is shitty, it’s that he’s not getting any help from the forwards or defence because they have to alter their approach and play less aggressively because their goalie is shitty.

Down Goes Brown - Unapologetically nostalgic for the past. Brutally realistic about the present. Grudgingly optimistic about the future.

That pretty much sums it up.

by RepressedOptimism on Oct 13, 2009 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s a vicious cycle.

At the game last night, I commented to Chemmy about how the Leafs were trying to force play in the offensive zone and he commented that at that point of the game (then down 3-1), that they almost had to. Which of course just led them to play shittier.

I think that spiraling effect of not just letting a game slip away, but helping it do so by playing desperate, reflects on the coaching. Wilson has got to take charge, calm his guys down, and make them play the game they are supposed to…..but having no confidence for the player in net seems to weigh more heavily on their minds than their coach’s instructions.

There are times

when you have to blame the loss on the team. This start of the season is not one of those times. Toskala has played horribly since the end of last year. EVERYONE is holding their breath on every wrister fired from the point. The D can’t gel if they have zero confidence in their keeper.

You watch. JoeyMac will play tonight and the d will have a good game. “The defence corp are finally gelling!” we’ll all say. But it has to do with confidence from the keeper.

PPP, The player this team needs the most,

was dragged through the mud for no reason by Brian Burke and then traded for nothing last year. He was only our leading goal-scorer at the time-SCORING EVERY GOAL WITHIN TEN FEET OF THE OPPOSITIONS CREASE-Nik Antropov. What are we going to do if we draft Boston the next Tavares? If/When that happens Burke should be immediately fired.

The Redden goal sounded like it came in off the post. That may make it a flukily awesome goal… or just mean that Toskala is still afraid of white ice. Either way, it doesn’t alter any of the main conclusions here, just sayin’
