I’m certainly not going to throw Ron Wilson under the bus, but it’s not a realm of impossibility to say that the whole team needs to improve. A coach influences special teams the most, along with breakouts and defensive zone coverage. However, routinely the Leafs have been either too passive, too lazy, or too confused with each other. That shouldn’t be happening at this juncture of the season, at least the passivity. And that does reflect on the coach and how he sends out his message.

No, but

you could blame the fact that they have no breakout plan, can’t handly anyone else’s forecheck, and are soft as fuck on the puck on the coaching staff.

Also,

you could blame the fact that they don’t go to the net anymore (they used to, doesn’t make sense to me) and they can’t forecheck and they can’t get scoring chances from good areas. Also, that they don’t block shots either. Where are the forwards on the point men? WAY too many point shots getting through.

If Ian White is blocking shots in the crease (making saves) then there’s a problem. Need blocks out up high, especially if opposing forwards get to stand in front of the net unmolested. No forwards up high on the points at all. Brutal.

You can’t look at where they are absolutely, you have to look at the trajectory. Which seem at least vaguely upwards. And when a team is doing bad, that’s not a given.

I want to trade players between my teams. Spoon can go to the Leafs (truculossity!), and Vesa can go to the Tigers, where conceding 6 points a game puts you at the top of the league, not the bottom.

Yes, another Ron Wilson post.

First of all, I am not advocating the firing of Ron Wilson. I really don’t think this group has given him much of an effort this season. 6 games is not enough of a sample size to make that kind of a decision on his handling of the team. But at one point does management step in and say: ok, enough is enough. we need to shake things up.

I’m not talking about the fans or the media. I mean Peddie and Burke. There obviously has to be some point that this becomes a possibility.

Deep breath..

Imagine a clean slate. Forget the first 5 games of the year. This game was not that bad. MacDonald looked okay, the 3rd and 4th goals were flukey and the Leafs are too offensively challenged to mount a comeback against a team sitting on a 3 goal lead. Nevermind that there confidence is rattled, 2 new guys (Stalberg and Bozak) are in the line-up and the Leafs were missing 2 of their regular forwards (with good reason, but still) in Stajan and Hagman.

Overall this was a better effort with some tough breaks. You expect to lose games like this during the season. Just came at the wrong time.

My guess is Wilson will defend his team’s efforts tonight and say he feels bad about the booing. The one consolation maybe is that Toskala wasn’t in goal or else he probably would have had to endure being the focus of the booing.

Fine with getting rid of Blake or Mayers (Stempniak’s been doing quite well), but Ian White should stay on the D. He’s been probably our best guy back there. There are enough kids to take over for the shit forwards.

If anyone’s to blame it’s the GM that thought signing big forwards that can’t score would make a difference in the won/lost column.

But hindsight is 20/20 and I’m just as bad as everyone else for it. I was lulled into thinking they’d be competitive… they aren’t.

Considering that the Leafs were continually railed against for being very non-cognizant of their past, I have no problems of the Leafs propping up their history and actually honouring their past players properly.

Seriously... you want me to accept this?
When a team can’t move the puck out of its own end and does a lousy job of penalty-killing, then that is a reflection of man management and tactics and system.

Moving the puck out of it’s own end is the COACHES job? Holy crap. Having coached hockey, I now realize what my real job was all along… playing for the players!

As for the “lousy job penalty killing” it sure doesn’t help when your original starter has a .652 save percentage when you’re a man short.

Basically the media are running out of players to blame, and they have to write articles… some of which write themselves. There is no tactical “flaw” that the media can refer to with any clarity. They just spew crap like that to make it sound like it’s all Wilson’s fault.

What is Wilson doing that doesn’t work on the PK? What tactical system of occult defensive positioning is he using that is SO freaking arcane that the Leafs D can’t figure it out to a degree where they kill some penalties off?

Hunter handles the Forwards.

I want to know what system people think Wilson SHOULD be using.

I’ve heard players use the term “backside pressure” about 4 times already this year, specifically in reference to the fact that they aren’t applying it. This amounts to the weak side forward not DOING HIS FUCKING JOB AS WILSON INTENDS IT. That isn’t his fault. It’s the shitty forwards that don’t back check who are fucking things up half the time.

I’m a mangaer responsible for 10 people at my office. It’s part of my job to make sure they do their jobs, and to ensure that they carry out my instructions as I intended. If they don’t their job they get in trouble, but I also I have to make an adjustment to the way I communicate to them. Eventually, if they still won’t do their job, MY BOSS comes down on me and tells me to do my job the way HE intended it.

I’m not really a manager but the rest of this is true.

by general borschevsky on Oct 13, 2009 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Shit rolls downhill and all that. I have to agree, that’s basically how management works in everything, except sports.

The problem is when the players make ten times the salary as the coach and the coach is in danger of losing his job before the players do. The balance of power shifts because while the coach can yell all he wants, it is still easier to can the coach at the end of the day.

Not sayin it’s right, but that’s just the way i see it.

by T is for Truculence on Oct 13, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand that coaches don’t have that much effect on a team’s performance if said team doesn’t have good players. There’s only so much a coach can do when the roster is marginally talented. That being said, what a coach can do is put said players in the best position to succeed. And if a coach doesn’t do that, then that’s not a good coach. If Ron Wilson continually plays players that don’t deserve ice time, makes lineups that don’t fully utilize the talent he does have, and still struggles to communicate to his players on making better choices on the ice, then yes, the coach is culpable.

I think even with goons and plumbers there’s a certain threshold of skill to make it as far as the NHL. As much as we like to say so and so is a talentless hack, it’s a helluva gauntlet to even make it to this league, even if it’s for a short time.

The realities of the salary cap and all that are really out of the coach’s hands. This is where coaches and management have to work together, and have each other’s backs.

Professional cusser causer.

by T is for Truculence on Oct 13, 2009 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

And Wilson shouldn’t be held accountable for the players that have been brought to this roster. And I agree that there’s not much a coach can do talent wise to be blamed. However, I will blame Wilson if it warrants it. And that will have to do with on-ice play with said players. If players continually giveaway the puck, continue to look confused, continue to be passive on special teams (standing around, not helping each other on the boards, not having active sticks, etc.), then more talented players won’t do much if they’re not internalizing what the coach tells them.

But again, the Leafs haven’t played 10 games yet. The season is barely a quarter over. Firing Wilson right now is useless, since the new players haven’t had a chance to familiarize what their tendencies are and what kind of team the Leafs are right now. After 25 or so games, and the Leafs are not improving in any shape or form? Well, then that’s an issue that will be dealt with at that time.

Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell

Agreed. The Leafs have always been known to be a blue-collar team that played heart and soul, above their potential. I don’t give a damn if we don’t have the same talent level as the Capitals right now, but we gotta have the same heart. Call it nostalgia but I just don’t see the same level of pride and courage in this team right now. They are rolling over and that more than anything is keeping this team from success.

Gustavsson will be fine

I read an interesting (read MORONIC) article on Sportsnet earlier today by Mark Spector about rushing prospects like Gustavsson in which he compared him to Kiprusoff, Lehtonen, Vokoun, and Backstrom… he of course conveniently left out Jonas Hiller and Henrik Lundqvist…. but hey why make an argument by mentioning BOTH sides of it.

by Steve Burtch on Oct 13, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

the funny thing of course is

Lehtonen was a 2nd overall draft pick that was playing regularly in the NHL at the age of 20. Vokoun was a backup to Mike Dunham for 4 years before he got his break, but that wasn’t through any fault of his own, Backstrom waited until he was 27 to make the jump to the NHL, and Kiprusoff had played 2 years in the AHL before he turned 24.

Gustavsson is 24… he should be in the NHL now… and Lundqvist and Hiller both made the jump successfully at that age or earlier DIRECTLY. Waiting on a 24 year old (which includes Bozak, Hanson, and Stalberg) like they’re 18 year old rookies is absolutely asinine.

Want to feel depressed?

I updated my Ballard Division standings on tonight’s game recap and the Leafs have the same goal differential as the 1974-75 Washington Capitals did at this same time of the year. Except that version of the Caps had a win and a tie.

I refuse to believe the Leafs are as bad as they’re showing and certainly by the end of this season. Will the Leafs make the playoffs? Not if they play like this, absolutely not. But the Leafs aren’t going to continue playing this way, nor will the same players continue to be on this team. Washington was a mess at the time, not long after their expansion year. The Leafs have the resources to make moves and certainly a GM in Brian Burke that will not stand for this kind of play. The optimism is faint, but the flame hasn’t flickered out. The evidence is gradually coming with Bozak being brought up and Stalberg returning to the ice. I’m keeping the faith – I just won’t be as vocal as I like to be at this point in time.
