The Pit of Ultimate Darkness
- I think we need a bit of cheer today. And Bloge Salming is the man to provide it.
- Anyway, so that's it for the larks and funnies. Last night's action is reviewed by Leafs247, Jared in 10 words or less stylee, a more than slightly cross Norman James Sports and Blueshirt Banter providing the opposing view.
- A curative from Maple Leaf Hot Stove for what ails the blue and white.
- Toronto Sports Media on some ticketing/scalping issues in and around the ACC of late.
- Marlies lose in overtime, on a shorthanded goal, having been 3 - 0 up. It's spreading!
- The Copper and Blue have an interview with the authors of Black Ice, which looks like a really interesting read.
- Your non-hockey link for today is another for the nerd in your life (you, essentially). It's Pulp Fiction as realised via the medium of Google Wave.
- LATEBREAKING: Leaf&Lion wrote a live blog on the game last night and....well, I saw it my reader but must have been thinking about sweets or something...so here it is now anyway.
- LATEBREAKING: Kavel Pubina has resorted to amusing pictures also.

Also,
Did anyone else freak out when Ian White got hit in the face with the puck? Like, we aren’t winning with him in the lineup, it would be impossible without him.

I wasnt worried for a second, Ian white is, pound for pound the toughest player in the NHL

Honestly we could probably get Giguere cheap because Anaheim wants to cap space. We could probably also convince Anaheim to waive Giguere and call him back up which would let us claim him at half price.
Thanks, being last place!

we could probably get a good deal on Giggy yes, but what do we have that they want? They arnt gonna want our UFAs and RFAs looking to reup and in most cases looking for a raise.
they are gonna want picks your youth with a roster player thrown in.
I think its a bit early to push that button yet.
Also Giggys NTC, sure Toronto is an ideal destination for him outside of Cali, but he still has to say yes

IF we were to trade for Giggy (personally don’t think we’re there yet), I’m thinking the Ducks would be more under the Burkian perception that getting rid of him would give them an asset back in cap space. Say if we were to trade MVR (who isnt playing the rest of the year) for Giggy, they would automatically free up over 3 million to add someone at the deadline and another 3 on top of that after the season.
I'm not even supposed to be here today..!
I dont see the ducks giving up Giggy for anything less than a Heatly like package (values adjusted)

Why? They have Hiller and don’t need a $6.5M backup.

they dont need that cap space tomorrow, there is no rush. at the very worst, they shop him till the deadline and then bend over for someone willing to take him
all in all IF he chooses to waive his clause, which I still have huge doubts he will.
Refusing To Bow To Your Standards Since 2006

But that’s less cap space. They could move him now, do nothing with the space all year, and then grab Kovalchuk and something else good at the deadline easy.
Pension Plan Puppets*

well I’m sure they’d move him now if they got offered a decent package, but I don’t see Burke offering them anything they need or want

What would the Ducks be needing right now anyway? Defensive depth? To be honest our “defensive depth” isn’t quite as impressive as it looked at the beginning of the season so I don’t know about that anymore either.
Aren’t we all glad now the “move White” people didn’t get their way?

the ducks need defense for sure, but they probably have no intrest in finger because his contract, white is a pending RFA who Burke really doesnt want to part with it, Exelby is garbage and Frogren is a third pairing D at best, not really a substitute for what they lost in pronger and not a good enough stop gap for their youth
Refusing To Bow To Your Standards Since 2006
by JaredFromLondon on Oct 18, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions
The only real option is Kaberle (who has been decidedly meh so far) but Burke is not going to be asking him to waive his no-trade so that’s not really a go.
Professional cusser causer.
by T is for Truculence on Oct 18, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions
the one big problem with trading for Giguere, besides his NTC, is his contract. Anaheim would probably want expiring deals in return, so guys like Stajan, Poni, Stemp, etc. Giguere still has 7 million left on his contract for next season. Dealing for Giguere would severely impact any chance Burke has at making a significant upgrade in the free agent market next summer.
Anaheim would probably give us Giguere for a conditional fifth just to be rid of his salary.

by JaredFromLondon on Oct 18, 2009 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions
agree, if only bc Anaheim isn’t in need of ridding his salary just yet. they don’t need the cap space, really. If they had their eyes set on a target, then i should see them moving Giggy for something (considerably more than a conditional fifth, as well). As it is, they’re more likely to shop at the deadline for a team who really needs some stellar backup tending for a playoff push/run.
i can see where they are coming from in that Giger has an NTC and toronto is one of the few places that his son would be close to the medical care he needs (also apparently giggy has stated he wouldnt mind coming to toronto) but i can see the ducks trying to squeeze this for all its worth.

I don’t see Anaheim getting quality assets for their $7M backup.
Most teams don’t have the cap space or the need.
Pension Plan Puppets*

yah, but Giggy isnt a 7 mill backup by trade, he’s a 7 mill starter who has had his job stolen by a younger and cheaper goalie, so to most teams he has starter value
